Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Well, he hired Parcells... who led him to Bill... who led him to Mayo. How did Pete get in there?

Kraft didn't hire Parcells.

Pete was clearly the one stranger someone could trust.

Plus wasn't Pete a former Jet's failure, which was where Parcells was heading?

A little personal satisfaction if it worked out....................

You're right. So it makes sense that if Kraft does need a new coach, he'd go with Vrabel or someone else that he knows and trusts rather than someone brand new to the organization.

Focusing on your last point - I can see Vrabel leveraging the Jets opening and saying “Bob, if you don’t hire me to replace Mayo I’m gonna end up coaching your hated Jets and beating you myself twice a year… and then you’ll look even worse for passing on me twice…”

Kraft may hate the idea of that happening more than he likes Mayo. Kraft also gets the personal satisfaction of “stealing” a good coach from the Jets again.

As much as I would like the move, it's too much to expect Kraft, at this point of his life, to trust someone like Ben Johnson or especially Gruden for the job.

As fans we might disagree, but it would be a bold enough move cleaning house, let alone bringing in people he casually might know.

You come up with the best scenarios.

I think the team being a dumpster fire brings out the best of your posting talents.

You're the Bedard of the forum! (in a good way).

I think there is something to the Vrabel rumors, even though reporters are just connecting dots.

Forget about Gruden. I doubt Ben Johnson is a possibility too, even though that looks like the best direction from a fan's perspective.

Kraft's last hires were people he knew well.

I doubt at this point he turns the team over to a stranger to the organization.
I think the “Vrabel wants the job” reports are legitimate because they likely come from Vrabel’s camp, not Kraft’s.

If Vrabel wants to coach in NE, is it going to be any question that he will be?

I consider several dozen college programs would have already canned Mayo for the ineptitude he’s displayed.

Shouldn’t the pros be a higher bar?

Not really a scenario, just looking at Kraft’s past actions and seeing how he could view certain things.

One other thing I think about is all the excuse-making that is made for Mayo. “It was a year too soon”, “he’s still learning”, “the roster is bad!”, “he didn’t have enough help”… etc.

While we all focus on how silly some of this is regarding why you should not fire him, also consider how it will impact team culture. Mayo will get a free pass and all the excuses in the world, but then they will probably cut 50% or more of their 2024 roster next year. Players who are dumped will be left wondering “what if I was still learning, or it was a year too soon for me to hit my stride? What if I needed more coaching help? Where is my free pass?” When the coach gets a golden ticket but the players are treated as expendable, you will see some tension.

Yes. But the fact he would be so coveted by other teams and had already wowed them in interviews is why he was so eager to hold him within the organization. But, it was all a mirage. Just good PR.

And Bob knew Mayo would indeed be given opportunities before earning them. It starts with the Rooney Rule.

The Rooney Rule isn’t the problem. That just gets minorities exposure with execs and owners. Kraft’s promise to make Mayo HC in waiting stunted Mayo’s coaching development. He would have been better off going elsewhere, working in a different system, learning his craft more fully.

I don't see Vrabs coming out and saying that but there has to be someone who's laid that out for the doddering old fool. I hope he heeds it.

I can see Mayo being bitter over Kraft, the very guy who gave him a shot. Way too early.

With more experience, I think Mayo would make a fine coach. But someday even he’ll admit that he wasn’t ready and had a lot to learn.

Yeah it wouldn’t really be him but it would probably be agents talking to team staff etc. Plus just the implication when reports go out about his planned interviews with the Jets.

I don't.

Mayo completely lacks the instincts for this.

I think Mayo can be a leader in a slower environment, but he lacks ability to make quick on the spot decisions as is evident in his press conferences, and game adjustments.

I think with a LOT more experience, in 5-10 years, Mayo will be a decent DC. That’s about it.

Although my personal guess is that once he is fired he will take the money and try to run back to the executive realm rather than try to rebuild his coaching image.

aren’t we putting the cart before the horse? Shouldn’t the Krafts hire a new GM first? Or keep Eliot and they pick a new HC?

If it’s Vrabel I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept Wolf, but gave Vrabel more control over personnel, and added some external people to the front office also.

Otherwise yes they probably should dump Wolf first.

Maybe, but where's the evidence of that?

From your pal Bedard this AM - "The coaches obviously have no idea how to scheme pressure. I was told that left with Bill and Steve Belichick."
