Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Their may not be better options available for the Patriots.
I think if the Pats open things up to a GM first and the GM picks his own coach then it’s a different story.

Sure the cupboard is a bit bare, but they have two key building blocks - a potential top 10 QB who is only 22 years old and athletic as hell, and a lockdown sophomore CB1 who has the potential to be best in the NFL. Those are huge.

They need a lot, but they have (probably) the #2 overall pick and $150M in cap space. Even more if they want to shed some of the contracts on the books now.

All of this together should attract coaching and GM talent; maybe not the absolute cream of the crop guys like a Ben Johnson who has his pick of the litter, but there should be lots of interest. They’ll also know that they really only need to go close to .500 next year and look competent doing it to make the fans happy after this debacle season, so they don’t have to have immediate results as far as playoffs, etc.

GM: Ray Agnew
He picks the HC after an exhaustive search. Someone like Job Gruden or Brian Flores.

(If Ohio State doesn’t win the National title, Ryan Day is probably fired. Vrabel would be the leading candidate to take over at his alma mater.)

Then the HC hires the coordinators.

Burn this down and start over.

Judgement Day for the Patriots post Brady & Belichick was 28 December 2024.
Great pick I’ll also throw in

23 years with the Vikings.

The bottom of the barrel is better than what we have currently. I feel like you don't understand just what kind of situation the Patriots are in right now.
This is irrelevant if you think you are hiring someone who is still mediocre and will be a problem down the line just because you are desperate. You don't try to fix a mistake with another mistake because you want to do something.

Fire Mayo if you are committed to going all out to get the right guy and think you have a shot to land him. If you already think that is impossible it doesn't matter if you hire someone marginally better.

Because I guarantee you if in 3-5 years the team is stagnant because Vrabel is the same mediocre coach he was on the Titans and you realize you wasted a third of Maye's career because you got desperate, you all would be looking back saying "I would have taken one extra season of Mayo to have a real shot at getting the right guy".

If you already think the Patriots options are "Mayo or settle" then just wait. If you think there's a real shot at a quality candidate, you make the move.

I agree. I guess the thinking is that Vrabel approves of the GM, the GM is hired and then the GM hires Vrabel. I'm on board with that.

Did Flores learn from his Tua crap? Maybe...maybe not. I don't know if I want to find out.
I'll tell you what, IMHO, Gilmore only won the DPOTY Because Flores was smashin' the QB Constantly.
He knows what he is doing.

Vrabel is one of the hotter candidates this coaching cycle, I think many GMs would be good with him.

Then maybe you shouldn't make a move if you really think they'll have to scrap the bottom of the barrel. I'd rather fire Wolf, get a new GM to build the team for a year, and be more attractive for next years hiring cycle than get stuck with a dud who we have to worry about firing 2-3 years from now anyways.
Have those rose colored glasses please your vision for this Team is Blurry.

Flores the DC good, Flores the HC bad...maybe.

Idk man. He really overachieved with that Miami team which was trying to tank. Says a lot. At the same time he had his issues with Tua, but we have also only ever heard Tua’s side of the story. Flores has really never commented on it much at all, which is a classy decision.

Mediocre is better than 'worst head coach I've ever seen'. That's where we are right now. An average coach, an average GM, an average offseason, this is a 7 win team, no question. The lack of talent on the field is exacerbated by the terrible coaching, and horrific front office. That's how you get to 3-14.

And the Patriots are not in a position to turn people down who actually have interest in the job. If you stick with Mayo, you'll pine for the days of 3-14.

You spent two years pretending Zappe was the savior of this team and that anybody but Mac would get us in the playoffs. Zappe sucked and we have a legitimately good QB and are still losing. I told you all this would be the case back then. You are again being desperate and begging for anything else. We'll get someone like Vrabel and you'll be exactly where you were in 2 or 3 years.

Again learn your lesson

He had Miami doing pretty well at the end, while players were complaining that the offense was too difficult.

You don't make a move to be mediocre. A HC is a years long commit. You can **** up Maye's entire tenure with the team if you say "well I don't really want Mayo so I'll settle for a few years of mediocre". You either play to win or you wait.

You make the decision when you are sure it is the winning decision, not out of desperation to put lipstick on a pig.

ABM = ANYONE BUTT MAYO!

Don't make me tell you again.

Kraft lucked out with Brady and Belichick. Someone needs to tell him that going back to the well didn’t work out. It’s obvious after 1 season that he made a bad decision with Mayo. Who in this organization has the balls to tell the Krafts that. Good coaches have below average players play sound fundamental football and the team gets better as the season progresses. We’ve all seen that but not this team and not this year with this coaching.

Have you seen Mayo's credentials?? You must be a relative.

Mediocre and Average allows Maye to develop, and the team to improve over time.

This clown show will make him regress, and completely waste his 5 years here.

It's not 'lipstick on a pig', it's a ****ing tourniquet until you can get someone here who can perform the surgery. If Mayo and Wolf are still here next year, this team will bleed out, and it will be 10 years until they're even in contention for the playoffs again.

Is there any doubt now that Mayo is Jim Tomsula?

No it allows the team to waste even more time. I'd rather lose 1 more year than 3 or more years.

If you are already resigned that we won't land anyone of quality, then you don't do it just to do it.

Like I said, if you spend 3 years wasting your time with Vrabel, you'll look back and say "hmm maybe grunting and taking one more ****ty year of Mayo to get a real coach wasn't the worst idea".

We know how this goes when teams rush and just take whatever scraps they can.
