People can call it how they see it, but I feel very confident that no-one would call a lateral inside their own 5. Maye has thrown backward passes on at least 3 screens that I can remember. I really think that Maye gets too quick on the trigger on screens.
If you look at the film, you will see:
The other receivers on that side are blocking.
Maye looks left to “look off” the defense.
Maye turns right and immediately throws.
We know this is the designed play because Mayes look left is quick and clearly a deke and the play side receivers are blocking.
Now look at Stevenson. He is lined up right at the 4.
Maye drops back like left, turns right and throws while moving backward and his arm is between the 3 and the 4 when he releases.
It’s a backward pass because Stevenson ran backwards and never got back to the 4, a lazy pattern.
There is no possible reason for the play to be designed as a lateral. Specifically because of what happened rule #1 of that route is be ahead of the QB.
Of course Stevenson also dropped the pass, looking like a lineman not a receiver.
This was 100% on Stevenson.
Maye was given a play call a Dems, a drop and a throw, it’s in Stevenson to get to the right spot.
