That is definitely a problem that happens. The good thing is that Maye has received a very good foundational training in the base West Coast Offense from AVP. For all the guy’s faults, he did an excellent job with that with Maye. So all that Vrabel really needs to do is hire an OC that runs a flavor of the WCO, which is fairly common in the league now. If his guy gets poached after a couple years, it’s probably not terribly hard to find another OC who runs a flavor of the WCO and translating things over wouldn’t be very complicated at all. It’s not nearly as hard as switching from McDaniels’ EP system to WCO, those bones were broken this year. The only reasoning that I heard recently, think it was Jay Glazier, that makes sense to me for not hiring a defensive coach is the OC poaching. He stated the disadvantage defensive oriented coaches have from an owners point of view who have a young QB is once they have some success offensively that guy goes to the top of the list for HC gigs. So essentially every 2-3 years your potentially replacing your OC.
I'm not saying I completely agree with not hiring a defensive minded coach, just that I understand the reasoning and find it valid.
If AVP gets the axe it will set this franchise back Its how the clown show teams like the Browns conduct business.
I don't know, he does not call plays on defense or offense. He was kind of a "culture" guy but when and if his coordinators get good and teams take them your changing play callers every few years.Your astute analysis is fact driven. However, he was handicapped with Ryan Tannehill who always managed to do a Mac Jones and throw an interception, or in Tannehill's case, several interceptions, to cost the team the game. Admittedly, I prefer Brian Flores over Vrabel, and I think he might bring one of the Vikings offensive coaches with him. I'm a little nervous about some of the offensive wunderkinds. I don't think Kraft would hire Flores. I think he would be afraid of him.
He would probably want a safer known quantity like Vrabel.
I'm in favor of starting the whole football operation over again. Get a qualified coach/GM combo in here to replace Wolf/Mayo.
I didn't feel great about either of them being qualified for those positions. With Wolf, it appears there was a conscious decision to punt on the year from a spending standpoint. So I feel a bit harsh dumping him after year 1 of what appeared to be a multi-year plan. But none of the moves he made on the margins or the drafting after Maye inspire any confidence for me. On Mayo, he's set up to fail as much as any coach I can recall with this garbage roster, but there are so many troubling signs.
Basically, I can talk myself into it not being "fair" that Mayo and Wolf get such a short leash and that they "deserve" one more year. But my gut instinct is that even given time they aren't cut out for their roles, so why bother talking myself into it? Just cut the chord.
My only hesitation is that we weren't seen as a very attractive spot last year for any of the openings (front office, head coach, coordinators). It figures to be better with Maye now, but it could be possible that we still aren't seen as a great spot. Not saying the total avoidance it seemed to be last year, but feels like for one of the ready-made coach/GM regime combos, we could be a few rungs down the list and not get the cream of the crop. If the talent level is a little better next year, it's possible we could be seen in a better light. So maybe there's a thought to give Mayo/Wolf one more year and then move on next year if you have to, and presumably be in better position to get a quality operation to come in.
What I would be most against is bringing in a new HC, forcing him to work with Wolf, it goes bad, we end up restarting again next year. I don't want 3 different operations in 3 years.
You forgot to add another choice. Should Kraft sell or step down. I would have said YES, and chances if that happened, Mayo would have been gone too, it’s like getting the two for the price of one!!What's the current pulse of Pats Nation?
Should Mayo be fired?
It's awfully hard to find a reason to keep Mayo and Wolfe around outside of "Kraft likes the dude".
I don't know, maybe we get lucky and Vrabel invites Kraft on a trip to Israel or something
Mayo is married to Chantel Mayo. The couple has three daughters and a son... 2 + 4...Who are the 6 assholes trolling?
I'm counting all the RLKAG votes as yes too.
Ben has never had to Control the entire operation, that worries me, plus he has STUDS playing offense for him, we've seen it many times. Please fire Mayo. It’s not just that he’s not doing a good job. He’s doing a terrible job. There are obvious things that are being done poorly nearly each game that a fan with mediocre knowledge of the game, like me, can point out. Plus, he doesn’t know what he’s doing. He walks around the sidelines looking clueless. Then he sells his coaches out as if he has no responsibility. And of course he has also sold out his players. He has no idea of how to be a head coach.
I don’t want to waste Maye.
I could see hiring Vrabel with bringing back Josh McDaniels to coach the offense. He’s a terrible head coach, but has always been a very good OC.
My preference would be to throw a lot of money at Ben Johnson. I don’t know much about him, but Detroit’s offense has been awesome and he’s the guy everyone is talking about. Then bring in Saleh to coach the defense.
If not Johnson, then hire another offensive and innovative head coach.
Coaching Maye, having a top pick, and having an absurd amount of money to spend to reshape the team has to be attractive… depending on what we do with Wolf and how much say the new coach has in player personnel.
Just fire Maye and maybe Wolf. Think of this year as a mistake and move on now.
