Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

“I haven’t heard a comment like that from a head coach in 20 years” is something you could say about at least one weekly Mayo comment. And there is always at least one other comment that is unlike anything you've ever heard from a head coach before.

I was listening to Taylor Kyles and Mike Kladkim's podcast yesterday and they were making the point that it's clear Mayo hasn't lost the locker room. Players are blaming themselves for the problems rather than the coaches. They both think Mayo's AVP statement was nothing and that it's doubtful Kraft moves on from Mayo.

Taylor Kyles is the biggest excuse maker for Mayo. Mike Kadlick is a close 2nd and he is afraid of saying anything really negative.

Mike was also an avid Mac Jones lover and defender. Still to this day. He post so much Mac Jones stuff that you’ll think he is a beat writer for the Jaguars.

from what i read all internal meetings.......wouldn't be too crazy after a flight back, but after playing so horribly, and after watching the krafts reactions in the box, it just seems like there's dots that could connect

probably not, but this team doesn't seem in position to cancel anything that may improve performance

They can blame themselves, but the coaches are not providing the structure they need for success.

It's a bit of both. The coaching isn't great, but they are legitimately a bad roster whether you isolate coaching out of it or not. Bill Belichick was only able to get 4 wins out of this roster remember and the discipline was falling apart with him last year as well. There's probably a huge element of people like Kraft, Wolf and the rest of the front office that are looking at this team and saying "the majority of these guys won't be here next year"....

which brings me to my next point on another post....

And Ben Coates said the same thing about playing under Pete Carroll after playing under Bill Parcells.

They didn’t win under Carroll, but at least they were happier as they counted their millions.

You aren't wrong. But the only way a coach that inherited a 4 win team that was a disaster last year that universally is considered to have the weakest roster in the NFL is getting fired after year 1 is if...

1. They suck so ****ing bad as a person that the players revolt and they completely lose the lockerroom. That did not happen yet.

2. They are a headcase who pissed off ownership and the front office so much that people really want to move on because they view him as toxic and someone they can't do business with. Again another thing that doesn't seem to be true.

This sucks for most of us to hear, but there was most likely a general conceit that the situation going into this year was "we know we are going to lose, we don't have the roster we want at all and a lot of these guys are here to just fill space on the team, and the entire coaching staff is new and there will be a learning curve and this is the year to do that".... AKA they went into this year knowing the expectations were about this low and everyone had a mulligan.

I’m pretty close to making the same decision. The games aren’t usually on broadcast TV in my area. I have pay to watch them play. I don’t really want to spend money to watch a team that isn’t interested in making a maximum effort to win. That now appears to be the Kraft way.

I don’t hate the idea of a Vrabel McDaniels or Daboll team up hell why not bring both on.

I never, EVER heard even the slightest hint that Mayo was doing great things ("wizardry") behind the scenes defensively in his role as assistant coach. To the best of my knowledge, his job was running the meeting room -- in other words, imparting game plans devised by SB and BB.

If anyone has info regarding whatever the hell he might have contributed beyond that, please chime in.

Whenever defense did well last season, all the reports were about how Mayo leads the defensive meetings and does all the coordinating. I recall at least one person flat out saying that on gamedays Steve was only reading the cards from Mayo's homework.

Whenever the defense did poorly, all talk was about Steve and Bill and no mention whatsoever of Mayo.

There are many here who pointed out there was a clear agenda aiming to prop up Mayo. The fear was that a decision had already been made and there would be no real search for a new coach if Bill got fired. And now here we are...

There is no argument for keeping Mayo. Hoping he is gonna be good is like hoping Zappe was the next best thing.

If you aren’t firing him now then can’t reall fire any of the coordinator. Because who will come here knowing that there is a very high chance that Mayo will get fired and the new HC will clean house.

Fire him now instead of losing a year of Maye for nothing.

I doubt Daboll gets fired. I talk to Giants fans all the time and they and the media are pretty soft on him and blame the roster for most of the problems. He's probably the only NYC HC I've seen have this bad of a track record and have everyone not ready to crucify him.

McDaniels is an even bigger disaster than Mayo and got fired a year and a half into both HC jobs despite being coveted when he went to both teams and securing really nice longterm contracts. They literally paid him a fortune to get away from them.

Vrabel is the best of the three, but honestly, he's not anything special either, I've made my opinion on him very clear. He looked good once with a loaded roster and he coaches to the level of the team.

I've said that over the years for one reason or another but come Sunday I just can't not check it out.

I'm on the same boat. I can't help but watch the Patriots, it's a Sunday habit I've been doing for 30 years.

This is the worst coached team I've ever seen. Worse than **** MacPherson years. At least there was some semblance of improvement on ****'s first year. I have seen no improvement on this team. In fact they are worse than they were at the start of the season.

Mayo will be back next year. It's a guarantee because of Kraft's ego. The team 'should' be better because they're gonna spend more money, learn from mistakes, etc. So we should have a better record next year which would compel Bob to give Mayo even more years. Hopefully Mayo gets better because I have a feeling we have at least 5 years of him coaching the team.

There's a little revisionist to this though. Bill shot himself in the foot not having a d coordinator for a few years. That on top Patricia/Judge on offense really pissed a lot of fans and media off. Then when you talked to players, the players all gushed about Mayo as he was who they actually dealt with on the regular. And then we almost lost Mayo last year and the fans and media were pissed the **** off and there was a general perception that Bill didn't want to promote and give Mayo a title over Steve and it was causing an issue.

I remember a lot of the discussions on here about that and amongst other Pats fans on other sites during all of that. There was a lot of fire at Bill for how he handled both coordinator roles and the only one that was viewed highly was the one at risk of walking (might have been a good thing overall).

Nobody was really talking about a HC search at the time. This is also stuff that dated back well before Bill was fired.

There was an issue with not doing a real HC search at the time. But fans were generally split on that. Some didn't want Bill to leave, some wanted to see Mayo because he'd been popular for a few years, and some wanted something entirely divorced from the prior regime entirely. Mayo was sort of the least sexy pick that wouldn't ruffle feathers too much for people in both camps.

Mayo really didn't get the heat he's getting now until a bunch of press conferences in the pre season.

Neither of them were. Bill Belichick is always going to have the biggest influence on a defense of any team he is part of it. It didn't matter. Patricia is a hack fraud, but looked good when Bill was the coach, Flores looked good, the team with zero coordinators looked good when it was mostly just Bill in charge, and then Mayo/Steve looked good.

There's also a separate element where Bill Belichick did have to go and there was no way you were firing the dad and keeping the sun. You couldn't fire Bill and make Steve the HC. You couldn't effectively promote Mayo over Steve. And a new HC outside the old regime is going to want to bring in his guys.

It's not surprising that defense that lost the best defensive mind in NFL history declined irrespective of who the next guy was. The problem is, there was no feasible way to keep Bill Belichick anymore. There's a better argument that we are in the mess largely because they wanted a happy medium of letting go of the problems that Bill brought but wanted to believe we could keep all the good stuff if we held onto all the leftovers.

Honestly the funny thing to me is that virtually everyone who was even a little honest with themselves knew this team was going to win about the same amount of games as last year. Nothing that's happened this year is remotely unexpected beyond Mayo sticking his foot in his mouth and being an overall idiot in press conferences. That aside, most people on here knew this was a lost season. The media always had us pegged as one of the bottom teams. The team makes a lot of the same stupid game losing mistakes they made over the last few years (especially last year). The defense losing Bill and getting banged up and naturally declining as a result is the only thing that wasn't entirely predicted (though it should have been)

Going into the season the number one goal was to get Maye NFL ready and everything else was after.

It's just another thing to expect something and then to have to live with it for 18 weeks.
