This is the blueprint for ridding ourselves of Coach Jerod

You're rationalizing. You honestly believe the Jete wouldn't now be playoff-bound with better coaching out of the gate?

And Campbell blundered his way into a gem of an offensive coordinator, whose COACHING has spelled a world of difference for that team. And as previously noted, a bonehead COACHING move yesterday all but ensured Detroit's loss to a less-TALENTED Packers team.
No I absolutely don't. If anything they screwed up firing a really good defensive coach because the offense had an Aaron Rodgers issue.

As for Campbell, the difference for the Lions is St Brown and LaPorta both being on the offense and them having Goff for a stable QB. Take those away and they aren't having this year with or without Johnson who was there when they were effectively a .500 team in 2022.

Edit: oh and I forgot to mention the Lions have the top ranked offensive line in football.

Sure, the crumbling remnants of the BB way makes it feel like we need a complete departure and reset.
But, I would absolutely take Vrabel HC & JMD OC - compared to what we've had the last 3 years.
I don't want to hire Johnson or Brady as HC - because we can't afford another risk with a first time HC.

Vrabel has 6 years experience as HC, and went 54-45, and 2-3 in playoffs (with Mariota & Tannehill)
It's better than BB's first stint with CLE (36-44, 1-1)

My question would be why is Vrabel not a risk when he

-Just got fired after a 6 win season on a better roster.
-All his playoff wins were in a single season and it was 5 years ago and he hasn't replicated it since
-He wants full control of the team

I don't really see how he's less of a risk when his experience isn't even that good, he got worse as he got more experienced

Comparing different eras is weak (BB vs MV 1st job). Otherwise, OK.

If I was Jonathan I would go out and ask as many ex-HCs as I could find who would talk to me what they would do to fix this team. I would take down all their responses. Then I would ask Jerod the same question over the next couple of weeks and compare/contrast.

I think it would become glaringly obvious that the other guys’ responses will have actual ideas and substance, and Jerod’s response will likely be some kind of nondescript fluff answer that doesn’t actually give any specific info or ideas.

Vrabel made the playoffs 3 consecutive years (19-21) - with Tannehill!
(last in '21 - with only Henry (for 8 games) and AJ Brown as anyone of note on that team)
He has a 6 record of over .500 - that's a lot of experience.
With a good draft & big FA $ - this team could re-stock quickly.
Don't you trust Vrabel to fix the D more than Mayo?

IF Jonathan gets a bigger say this time, then Mayo is gone. Problem is, that would be such a hit on Bobby's pride. He went all in on the "gut feeling" - comparing it to buying BB from the Jets. That's a big tamale to swallow.

What’s worse, just swallowing your pride and saying “I got it wrong this time”, or letting your ego take precedence and allowing the team to sink further? This team will be even worse next year if they keep Mayo which seems impossible. No one will want to come to the games and Maye may decide he doesn’t even want to play here when his rookie deal runs out.

Vrabel was victim of a clueless owner (Amy Strunk) and a woefully inexperienced GM (Ran Carthon) handpicked by that owner. He was a taskmaster the players loved, has a 56-48 record (including playoffs) and was named NFL Coach of the Year three years ago. His rosters weren't that great; he made do with Ryan Tannehill at QB.

Nowhere has Vrabel ever suggested wanting "full control" of team personnel decisions. Like any head coach he wants a GM he can be on the same page with philosophically.

I 100% agree. My point is, old billionaires are stubborn and proud, and not always willing to admit errors.
But, if he doesn't fire Mayo, the team will suffer again next year, and the Kraft brand will lose a LOT of money, and esteem.

There's plenty of sources saying he wanted full control and that's a big reason he got fired.

The reality is, Vrabel only succeeded when he had a competent QB, Henry and Brown. Once his star players left, he started losing. We can blame everyone else for his failure, but we've seen this play out with plenty of coaches.

Vrabel coached to his teams talent level, nothing more, nothing less.

The blueprint: let Mayo open his mouth. Seems to be working so far...

Vrabel didn't want to be GM, he wanted a GM with experience he could work with -- Ryan Cowden, who was the Titans' Vice President of player personnel when Strunk tapped Carthon. Vrabel apparently had a solid relationship with Carthon's predecessor.

These reports of Vrabel allegedly wanting "full control" appear exclusively from the Strunk camp. I've seen nothing along those lines from Vrabel directly.

Vrabel isn't going to say it directly to the media when he's being battered over it in the media already. What's he supposed to say "hey yeah that thing you are all ****ting on me for is absolutely correct". If it wasn't true, Vrabel would have been the first one to fiercely deny it. It does nothing but benefit him to let the whole league know that.

Honestly, I'm just not interested in a failed HC, who is a protege of a member of the old regime who is also a defensively minded HC.

They should have never hired Mayo and just ripped the bandaid off from the old regime and started fresh and got a forward thinking mind. Vrabel is just doubling down on the same mistake they just made. It's just another indication that Kraft and co can't let go of the Bill Belichick era and want to be stuck in the past chasing a ghost instead of moving on. They would a defensive guy tangentially tied to an older era.

Doing post-mortem battle in the media with Clueless Amy Strunk would be a nonstarter for many reasons. Regardless, Vrabel is a winning coach and where he lands next as HC will shed whatever light is needed on the "full control" canard.

One thing we can agree on: hiring Mayo was a disastrous decision.

I still love you tune

It won't matter who you bring in if you don't upgrade the roster. It's really that simple. Better players = better record.
The existing coaching staff would take better players and make them worse. Just as they have with the present roster. Pleas let’s don’t ruin any more players with these coaches.

I'm willing to let him learn because I don't feel like the HC is the main problem on any team unless they're making game changing mistakes. It's about the players and always will be to me. The examples of this is played out every year. Of course some coaches are better than others but none of them win without the players.

Mayo may or may not be HC material, but judging him so early after he inherited such a crap roster would be unfair. If they don't give him time to learn with more top players then they'll just keep repeating the 3-13 and 4-13 seasons they've had.

I almost want to see Mayo replaced by Mike Vrable just to see the fans try to spin things here when Vrable leads this **** roster to another **** season, which is exactly what would happen.
Making players worse is a game changing mistake.

Not making adjustments during or even between games is a game changing mistake.

Not having the team ready to play coming off the bye week is a game changing mistake.

Predictable and unimaginative play calling is a game changing mistake. Calling inside runs on every first down is a game changing mistake. Calling no pass plays longer than five yards is a game changing mistake.

I could go on…. But I’m sure you get the idea.

I'm on record as being patient and allowing him to make mistakes and grow from them, but i'm starting to become concerned about Mayo's ability to improve.

He keeps saying dumb things and then walks them back
He passive-aggressively goes after players and coaches
He is responsible for the offense and it still sucks...other than Maye no improvement
He is responsible for the defense and they suck

Just like last year this is a sloppy, undisciplined team and that is on Mayo (as it was on Bill last year).

Geez. Two receivers and the QB all doing well, and the fact that they’re playing behind the top ranked offensive line in the whole league is overlooked.

They’ve got the top ranked O line and one of the top offenses in the NFL.

We have one of the worst O lines, and one of the worst offenses in football.

Seems there might be a pattern emerging…
