The examples of this is played out every year. Of course some coaches are better than others but none of them win without the players.

Bill Belichick's entire career can be summed up by "the years he had Tom Brady, and the years he didn't". He got fired specifically because his coaching could not overcome the talent. Bruce Arians won a SB because Tom Brady and a bunch of talented players showed up on his team for a year. Tony Dungy was a defensive HC whose entire HOF career was because Peyton Manning ran a worldclass offense in Indy while he was there. Gary Kubiak was a largely middle of the road HC who had a .522 winning percentage and only made the playoffs 3 times in his career that won a Super Bowl because he came to Denver and had a generational defense for one year.

It matters, but it matters so much less than it's sold on as here. Talent is always king.

We've seen mediocre and bad coaches get dragged to Super Bowls by insanely talented teams. We've seen HOF legendary coaches get fired because they couldn't overcome a lack of talent on the team.

Mayo sucks and is nothing special, but I'll tell you right now if he was coaching the Lions they'd still be in the playoff hunt because the players wouldn't let his mistakes ruin it for them. He might be perceived as the weak link that prevents them from going all the way, but they would still be a good team. And Dan Campbell ain't sniffing **** with this team. If you think he's going to downgrade from St, Brown, La Porta, and the best ranked offensive line in football to this and still look like even remotely the same guy, you are crazy. Campbell was 3-13 his first year himself and that was mostly talent.

I'll agree that coaches aren't nearly as irrelevant as they are in the NBA, but the NFL is still far and away a talent first league.

And Campbell blundered his way into a gem of an offensive coordinator, whose COACHING has spelled a world of difference for that team. And as previously noted, a bonehead COACHING move yesterday all but ensured Detroit's loss to a less-TALENTED Packers team.
