I accurately described what happened: Martin wanted to go play for Parcells and Parcells wanted Martin. At that point, there's really nothing you can do to keep him. Parcells gave Martin one of the original "poison pill" contracts as an RFA and he walked. It happens.

It was the mid-to-late-90's and the guy was an RFA. Back then if a player wanted to go, and another team wanted him, there was really nothing you could do to keep him. Such "poison pills" are illegal today, but were allowed back then. IIRC, this was the first time such a poison pill was used in the NFL (though I am not 100% sure on that last point).
