Zappe cut by Browns (Update: re-signed!)

I agree on the first part, disagree on the 2nd.

Having him see Brissett get pounded with slow decision making is a lesson. Working on his mechanics was more important than playing. His time was well spent.
At this point, there it is not worth spending a lot of time on if Maye should have started sooner. The bottom line is that he was ready when he did get the chance. Participating in the cycle of game planning, practice, game time execution and even the cameo early on against the Jets clearly helped Maye be so comfortable when he got in there as starter.

Maye doesn't need a mentor. never did. bringing in Brissette was a mistake with a capital MISTAKE
Whether he needs one isn't quite the same as whether or not he'd benefit from one. Brady had a veteran backup for his first four years as a starter. [Flutie and Testaverde were there to help Matt Cassel more than anything else.]

Brady was in a different position for the first two years of his career... he was the back up. He was not the anticipated starter, not even remotely... He was the fourth qb...

The idea of a veteran "mentor" is always bandied about... its a feel good story, you know? grizzled vet, at the end of his run, helps the poor baffled rookie figure it all out... Its the Hallmark movie of the week for men... You (the collective you, not singling you out personally) and I have a different perspective on the roster, and the role a veteran back up plays in that position... A veteran back up provides security in case of injury, ie depth... that's about it... Friesz, Huard, Flutie, Testaverde & Newton would be the list of vets we had brought in over the years... Newton was a bit different as far as his anticipated role... but they were all here to round out the roster... the rookies might pick up a thing or two, but really, eh, the role is more about depth than anything else... the team might need a guy who can step in at a moments notice so the wheels dont fall off in case of injury... I guess you could say there might be a benefit from that, but I'm dubious as to the amount of help it actually provides

Players are responsible for their own development... They are the ones who have to engage, to ask questions about things they don't get, who have to practice to get it right, to study film to understand what they are seeing, and if they can take the second step, understand & anticipate what they will see on the field...

For the life of me I cannot figure this out - what was the purpose of bringing Brisket in this year besides to take a pounding? the newb coaching staff put him in the line of fire to take a beating, okay, great... is that it? anyone could have done that... I do not see any benefit... ymmv

Jameis has breathed some life into the franchise after Watson (I can't imagine they'll bring Watson back). Sure, he's not the answer, but they are a fun team to watch, and if nothing else they learned that Jeudy is pretty good.

edit: to be on the point of thread ... kinda bad luck for zappe

I was at the Bears game when the Zappening happened. We thought we may be witnessing history lmao
I was there too, and the stadium was electric for a few minutes there. I was happy to see Zappe come in mainly because I hated Mac, but it was nice to see some offense for a minute before the wheels fell off. Of course, Zappe sucked too (and I think a lot of us knew it already), and he kind of proved it when he under threw a wide-open Jakobi Meyers who had to roll into the end zone on what should have been a walk-in TD.

If you're not a fan of the Browns it's kinda fun seeing multiple pick-6s every game.

He wasn't lights out or anything, but his last time as a starter (2022, in Cleveland), he played significantly better than he did this year. I think the FO staff expected he had more left in the tank than he actually did.

30 ints, 7 pick 6's in 2019 is why he was dumped in Tampa Bay
Wow, just looked at Winston's stats, 33 TD's and 30 Picks in 2019.
No other QB i history has had at least 30 TD's and at least 30 picks.
George Blanda had 42 Picks but only 27 TD's in 14 games....in 1962....and made the Pro Bowl.
Winston is just playing in the wrong era.

Favre wasn't far behind...
1998 TD/INT: 31/23
1999: 22/23
2003: 32/21
2005: 20/29
2006: 18/18
2008 (Jets): 22/22

Had a TD/INT ratio above water in only 13/19 seasons.

What I think is pretty intriguing about Jameis is that he throws a horrible, momentum-killing, game-is-over pick, but the team doesn't pack it in, and they bounce back. They seem to really love the guy and want to play for him. Such a contrast to Watson. I sense that the Pats really like Drake, too, which is huge (mac, well... not so much).

Winston’s turnovers are his achilles heel.

For a brief instant when Sean Payton was his coach with the Saints he played the most efficient football of his career.

It takes a strong coach to reign in loose cannon gunslingers and some are beyond redemption.

Don't forget his 12 fumbles… his turnovers were at a historically bad level in 2019.
