Ehhh it's a little more nuanced than that. The coaching funnel has sort of become an old boys club and it's full of families and nepotism relationships all over the place. Steve Belichick was a coaching assistant on a premier NFL team at 25 years olds right after college. That doesn't happen to anybody else unless they are buddies with someone in the league even if their ambition is to be a football coach. How can Mayo talk about diversity when the NFL rosters are overwhelming black? Which is appropriate because black athletes constitute a disproportionate share of the best football players. Rosters are based on talent, as should coach staffs be, but the correlation between great athleticism and great coaching skill is weak.
Players get in based on merit and talent. Coaching is a lot more who you know. It's not just "talented players don't make good coaches". It's more, the players aren't breaking into the old boys club when they retire as easily.
