If you trade for a qualifying player in the first year of his contract, then, yes, that player counts against your team in the comp pick formula. That happened when the Pats traded for Isaac Sopoaga in 2013, and it's why Brian Hoyer wasn't directly included in the Garoppolo trade in 2017.Are you sure about that? My understanding has always been that a trade exists outside of the comp pick formulation, as the player’s contract was not signed for with the team but instead acquired via other means. This is why Belichick was always eager to trade low picks for depth pieces instead of signing them as free agents, because the traded-for player would not count against him in the formula and so he would get a better return back in the form of comp picks later.
