What did Drake Maye learn today?

Playing is important to see what translated from practice and what didn’t. You need to see a skill happen regularly in practice before you’d ever expect it in a real game, from there some skills are going to generalize to game conditions right away and some aren’t. At a very basic level, it seems like Maye’s performance against the blitz reflected his recent improvement in practice that has been talked about, while maybe the accuracy of his throws was a little more of an issue in the game than they would have expected. They can now do that analysis for every aspect of his game. That tells them where practice is falling short of preparing him for games, which then lets everybody involved make changes.

I’m gonna go and do it: Caleb in Chi looked terrible at the start and is slowly coming around. Think he has a better OL. Saying that, Maye was excellent. **** OL yea. Pretty sure if we swapped him with a team with an Elite OL (not advocating it), he’d be the second coming. There I said it and went there.
Maye is a much better prospect than Caleb Williams. Williams can use his athleticism, scrambling, arm angles etc to attempt throws that Maye can attempt just by standing in the pocket with his 6’5” height and awesome arm. Maye can scramble for the chunk yards needed to move the chains / punish teams for not having a spy. Running for yardage beyond that isn’t a sustainable formula. Josh Allen is a good model for how a QB should use his mobility. When needed. Not to rush for 100 yards and build a gameplan around.

Williams is overhyped, just like Kyler Murray, Bryce Young, and a lot of small quarterbacks. Daniels looks awesome, but I think he’ll get injured.

He also threw to players who hadn't even turned around to look for the pass. That was weird. I've almost never seen that before. The second INT was an incredible play by the defender but Cooper (I think) hadn't even turned around to look for the ball.
I don’t think Cooper or whoever that was really was the target, think his assignment was blocking. Saw a replay that showed Maye’s throw was intended for a player several yards farther back, behind the screen that was forming. The tip redirected the ball forward. So it was a fluke catch resulting from a mistake by Maye not lofting the ball over an intervening defender. The defender that caught the INT had the advantage of facing in the right direction to see the ball coming. Patriots player blocking him needed eyes in the back of his head to know the ball was coming their way instead of where it was supposed to be thrown.

Inaccuracy is definitely a concern. I say that because not often is a QB inaccurate to start and ends up fixing it.

Turnovers are a concern of course. Getting a gunslinger to change their game isn't easy.
My concern about his inaccuracy is that I thought there issues with his mechanics that they were working on in camp, and those reportedly were helping improve his accuracy. Now it seems like maybe he regressed under game pressure. He needs to be more consistently accurate. TD to INT ratio of 3:2 is not going to win championships.

You're sort of making my point.

Peyton was one of the greatest QB's in history. What was his playoff record? Half the time Manning was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs despite many times being home field with best record. The year you mention the Patriots were a much better team, but they were riddled with the flu, and Chicago was the worst Super Bowl team representative ever.

Yes if Maye makes the playoffs 15 times he might catch an off year. But if his inaccuracy doesn't improve it will be an ongoing problem against better teams.
He played one game and completed 60% of his passes including many throws, 2 TDs included, where he hit receivers perfectly in stride. Without the bad drops he’s close to 70% and he threw the ball down the field. You are wrong

His accuracy was fine other than sailing 2 early throws which is more attributable to excitement in his first start than mechanics. The first one may have been thrown away on purpose.

Maye had this offense in position to score 24-28 points his first time starting and it was against one of the best teams in the NFL with a good defense and he did it behind a below ave oline.

With that offensive output the Pats could be sitting at 3-2.

Drake has the tools to be special and im buying a ticket on the hype train. I think this team finishes between 7-9 wins baring any more injuries

IDK, Manning was on a talentless team and the Colts took the philosophy that Manning would air it out and damn the consequences. Peyton wasn't inaccurate in college.

I don't know enough of Maye's issues in college. He had a mediocre team around him last year. Not sure if his inaccuracies were due to him or the o-line and receivers. He was more accurate in 2022 when the team around him was better.
2 offensive coordinators and 3 different oline coaches if I read it right. Kind of a mess in Chapel Hill under Mack Brown

Sadly 2-15 is more like it, because the defense is atrocious, and the OL is a disaster. But we will see some good QB play, and more importantly Maye will gain experience and be ready to roll next year if the front office doesn’t produce another turd of an offseason.

Just remember, Mac started out as a guy who was somewhat safe with the ball, smart, accurate, etc before becoming an interception machine. It’s one start. No one should be concerned at this point that Maye is a reckless “gunslinger” or anything like that. First he needs to actually make throws and figure out the pro game. Then he will need to refine it. He’s in a good situation in one way because there’s no pressure to win games.

You people that say he has regressed in the nfl….,for one to regress, they have to PROGRESS! Show me his regression. Jalopy has regressed, which I thought was never possible but it has…this is Mayes game so he has no way of regressing…

And all 3 of his turnovers led directly to points for the Texans.
That is because we have a crappy defense. I never thought I would say that, the defense has been good to great for years and now they can't stop a nose bleed. QB's throw INT's and fumble the ball in games, its part of football. The defense should have been able to stop at least one of those from turning into points but they couldn't . This to me is the most frustrating part of this season. I really thought that the D would steal a couple of games for us this season , but it's not happening unless something drastically changes.

A fun fact as they are called ...
Maye's debut starting performance Sunday included a beautiful 40-yard touchdown pass that stood out in part due to its rarity. Since 2020, the Patriots have had just two passing touchdowns of 35 or more air yards -- one from Cam Newton and another from Mac Jones. Maye accomplishing the feat in his first career start, which included three touchdowns and a lost fumble, gives the Patriots something to build on. -- Mike Reiss

I'm just so happy Maye is getting all the First Team Reps he should get better and better every week.

Yeah, but his misses are bad. And not always under pressure. In college and this first pro game a high percentages of misses are food for picks.

If he completes 70% of his passes (in the modern game), but throws 25 interceptions a year, would I be wrong?

I am still optimistic this inaccuracy can be overcome with mechanics, since early word was Maye's was horrible, but it's often a tough hurdle.
