Greg Bedard: Pats coaching staff already at a troubling crossroads

Wozzy what your thoughts on the season so far and what are your hopes??
I hope they can patch some semblance of an offensive line together and Maye can get some reps at some point. We're way past the point of playoff relevance, it ain't happening this season.

They're well on their way with Jacobs, Sow and Onwenu... these are their only good linemen unless Strange returns.

This is a copy/paste:

The only path forward for the offensive line and basic competency on offense?

If Strange comes back...

LT – Demontrey Jacobs,
LG – Sidy Sow,
C – Nick Leverett,
RG – Cole Strange,
RT – Michael Onwenu, Caedan Wallace,

Or...

LT – Demontrey Jacobs,
LG – Sidy Sow,
C – Cole Strange, Nick Leverett,
RG – Michael Onwenu,
RT – Caedan Wallace, Zachary Thomas,

If Strange doesn't return anytime soon...

LT – Demontrey Jacobs,
LG – Sidy Sow,
C – Nick Leverett,
RG – Michael Onwenu,
RT – Caedan Wallace, Zachary Thomas,

It's not great, might be "good" if they can execute well and the scheme is decent. If they can upgrade center or any position by poaching some practice squad guys from other teams they should. They should be doing everything they can to improve the talent on this team.

And I fully acknowledge all of the above is unlikely pie in the sky dreaming...

So Dugger, peppers, Barmore, rham are all crap? That's where the money was spent. You want wolf to force players to sign?
What you're failing to acknowledge is how after re-signing all of their priority free agents they had the most cap space in the league.

They have the most cap space in the NFL going forward over the next few years.

Saying "they didn't have money" or there weren't better players available is baloney.

You sign crap, you have a crap team.

The only good offensive linemen on this roster are the ones who were already here... as painful as that might be for the "BB sucks" crew.

Dugger was Ridiculously over-paid.
And so was Onemenu; these people learned Nothing from the Shack Mason fiasco.

I read something that said Cole Strange will be back later in the year also that Guy below might be a Trade Target if the Jaguars continue to stink. Walker Little have played both Tackle and Guard.

Yeah... they had pretty much no other viable options to spend cap money on thier own players.. per NFL rules.

Little needed to get stronger exiting college but he was a good athlete. They could/should also look around at practice squads and poach a player now that Wallace was just put on the IR.

As I said the decision to keep bills OL was utter travesty. I have no problem with who they re-signed. Dugger and peppers were top 10 players at thier positions, so was Henry and ownenu. What other solutions would you like Lombardi to ask you to do?

Oh bwoy I saw it so Onwenu stays at RT now when it rains it pours for the 24 Patriots what a year.

Strange, Andrews, Wallace and Lowe all starters - mostly out of season or or IR.

Barmore, Bentley , Judon, Dugger - out for season or team or extended injury timeout.

When you lose 8 out of 22 starters by week 4 on a team with low level of talent, the signs are ominous. Pick 1 here we come. Sundays this year should be spent on something outside NFL.

Playing Drake Maye would keep us interested.

I’ve been watching the Pats since the mid 90’s and this is sadly the least interesting team I’ve seen. Now I know what it was like for the older fans.

He's been at practice this week

You missed the early 90s, much worse than now.

I started watching in 84 I was pretty young back then. I remember the years after 85 Super Bowl some very lean ones.

How about a change at QB. Would that make any difference? Hard to keep lying to the players saying "tough " and " warrior" gives the best chance to win. Kirk cousins put up last night passing yards more than we have on the year.

I'd have to see it to believe it with stranger... whenever he comes back he may only net a 6 round pick for trade compensation. May as well had kept Wheatley if that's the case.

I suspect that is by far the reason why his name comes up around here more than anything else.

This was Vrabel's coaching record. Shows their offense the last two seasons was abysmal, so I don't think letting him go was a mistake.

Doubtful he moves the needle much or at all. I'm neutral on Mayo right now but I don't see anything to suggest Vrabel was the right guy here.

Nice try. Tennessee was fourth overall offensively in 2020. That slipped to 15th in 2021 but they still made the playoffs. The slides in 2022 and last year were directly attributable to Tannehill's health and grooming rookie Levis, yet the rushing attack remained strong throughout.

I have no doubt Vrabel would've made the Patriots more competitive this year. The problem was Kraft's premature promise to Mayo and not knowing Vrabel suddenly would become available.

He still has more experiences than Mayo he was there for the taking some Team will get him in the Offseason. I think he's the Top name I don't think Teams will trust BB at his age.
He has experience true. However Vrabel reported was very aggressive with ownership at titans, and here he would have had to agree to the structures that Mayo had agree too. He also would have had to go through a rebuild like Mayo. Experienced coaches want to win.
