Held Hostage by the OT Position

OT (specifically LT) seems to be one of the toughest positions to nail down longterm in the NFL right now. Once the Patriots took Maye at 3, it became a real long shot as to whether a sure thing at LT was going to be in striking distance of a trade up back into the first, and either because they couldn't find a partner, or the value just wasn't there, they chose not to do that. There was also rumor that they were trying to trade back up to grab a WR, so it may have been moot anyway.

I agree though that if they don't find a stop gap solution, it's going to limit what the offense can realistically do in 2024. I think the hope is that they can solidify the other 4 positions on the line, and use the scheme to cover up a deficiency at LT. Get through 2024 without getting Maye killed, and you can use what should be a top 15 (probably top 10) pick to get your LT of the future.

It will be interesting to see today what the starting five is on the first day of pads. My hope if they've seen enough through the first four days to settle on that so they can start building chemistry. My gut tells me though we're going to see rotations continually through the public practices.
What did I tell you about logic and sensible takes?

Yup, it will not take much to crack this lineup, you are right.

By the same logic, if Wallce is not cracking this lineup, at RT where he played in college, you have to wonder why. Onwenu started as a rookie, Sow started as a rookie, Andrews started as a rookie, Strange started as a rookie, etc.
I think they want their $$$$$ they wasted on Chuckwuma Oakafor and Calvin Anderson. Also they seem to think V Lowe can become a better player. I think C Wallace is the First Tackle off the bench.

3rd round pick as a backup player. Too bad.

My best-case but somewhat realistic hope for the OL this season is that at the end of the year we view the top 7 OL on the team as:

1) Onwenu - He continues to be better as a RG but he ends up settling in as a decent enough RT because of team need.
2) Andrews - He continues to be solid at center.
3) Sow - Hoping he takes a step forward and emerges as a real quality option at LG.
4) Robinson - Hoping that by the end of the year he's a bona fide starting caliber player at RG.
5) Wallace - Hoping that he eventually ends up starting at LT where he looks like someone who eventually needs to be moved back to RT but he's not a total train wreck at LT.
6) Strange - He loses his starting spot to Sow/Robinson, but learns to snap behind the scenes and can at least be a quality backup to all 3 interior spots.
7) Lowe - He doesn't prove to be starter level, but proves to be a decent enough swing tackle.

If the dust settles that way, you head into next offseason with Wallace/Sow/Andrews/Robinson/Onwenu as your starters, Lowe as the swing tackle, Strange as the top interior backup. Ideally you find a viable LT with the 1st rounder, but hopefully Wallace is ok enough that you don't have to pass on a player you like WAY better to take one and demote Wallace to swing tackle (or move him to RT and Onwenu back inside or even traded if Sow/Robinson are good enough).

They should be starting Wallace and train him up. He will make lots of mistakes. That's OK.

We should check the percentage of OT's drafted in the 3rd are starting Game 1
A lot of posters say Mapu is a bust because he is not playing due to injury. Wallace is not playing due to performance.

They like that Guy below who they got off waivers at cutdowns. You know the old saying throw crap at the wall hope something sticks.

Agreed. I have seen so many PS and waiver claims come and go I find it difficult to get excited about any of them.

At least Drake Maye looks good, has the right physical profile, and seems to have the right temperament.

I wanted Maye more than Daniel’s but if Daniel’s goes in on a tear it will hurt a bit.

I think Daniels will be good but he is a small bone skinny guy. I doubt he lasts. Too slight and will run and get hit.

They're similar players, just bear in mind that Daniels is three years older.
And 20+ pounds lighter. Small bone structure. It will be a challenge for him to stay healthy if he starts running around

OT is holding this team hostage heading into game three.
I would say it's more on the QB and/or pass play call.

I can respond to this many different ways.

1) What OT? They started 4 guards and a center last week.

2) It's not just the OT holding the team hostage from the offensive line.

3) Is it holding the team hostage, or was this the master plan of the 'team' building the roster?

4) What do you expect, when you sign dumpster free agents, who shouldn't be in the league, and draft guards round 4 and later, 'projecting them to play tackle'?

It's ok to be wrong.

In your defense, the QB play hasn't been great, and a couple of play calls were pretty bad in key spots on Sunday, but, yeah, neither one of those are more responsible for what's going on.

I would say it's more on the QB and/or pass play call.

It's both. The protection was shaky overall; too many free rushers, sometimes even the ones who were double-teamed...
