OT: Aiyuk saga ends re-signs with SF 4/$120m extension

He ended up settling for the offer the 49ers gave him 3 weeks ago, so not really. He also pissed off the entire NFL community, including his GM, coach and likely his teammates.
He and SF found out what others were willing to pay. This was necessary for he and SF to feel more comfortable about the terms of the contract.

we cant afFord him anyway
We couldn't or shouldn't or both ?
"It wasn't because they couldn't work out a trade package with San Francisco or didn't offer Aiyuk a big enough contract extension. The Patriots met both of those qualifiers. They were ready to pay Aiyuk over $30 million a season, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area.Aug 7, 2024"

"Brandon Aiyuk is personally offended that the 49ers reportedly have offered him "only" $26 million per season" by Grant Cohen. (early in offseason)
Did they make him a second offer before th 30K?

Oops i mean 30 mil/year

True. But he's also 36x better than anyone on our OL.
I'd only take him for 1 season until we draft a LT. Then, I'd be more comfortable with Maye behind the OL.

I don’t know how many offers they gave him, but the offer he signed was on the table since 8/12

As expected, both parties found out that there was no better situation available. So, they both signed. Personally, I think that this is a win-win for both parties. The price was too high if a team had to pay a top draft pick in addition. But, in the end, teams were willing.

Not sure if this is more info ….

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Pearsall getting shot in the chest. Hard to believe he survived that.

FWIW, the Pats would have paid Aiyuk more than he got with the 49ers according to Albert Breer. It sucks that players don't want to come to New England anymore (that will change if they turn things around). But it is good that the Pats are willing to step up to the table pay for real talent.

So, we know what we are ready to do to get a #1 WR: a 2nd, a 3rd, Bourne AND $30M a year.

We'll see who we can get next year. BTW, $30M a year will put a dent in the cap money to be available in 2026 and 2027.

To be honest, I am glad he's not here. At this point in our rebuild, having an asshat malcontent money grubbing diva on the team would have been a bad thing. From him probably being a general nob about things to complaining about how the rookie (maybe) threw it too hard and it chipped a nail....I just think all the extra **** that goes with him would not be worth it at this point in our journey.

I watched the receivers show on netflix...this guy is a decent WR, but he's not vocal so not a leader, and he's also had defenses focused on 3 better players on the offense at any given time: Deebo, Kittle and Christian...

not losing sleep over losing out, would have been more concerned if we had gotten him

I really don't know what he and his agent were thinking. Did he really expect to get Lamb/Jefferson type money?

Allegedly..

California is the highest taxed state, so we can throw that excuse out. 49ers shouldn't have let Aiyuk go set his value. NE set it and Aiyuk used that number, blocked a trade to NE and elsewhere until the 49ers caved. Aiyuk used the Pats and wanted to stay in SF all along.

Man... Aiy Aiy Aiy... uk.
