Player Signing Patriots Claim 4 on Waivers

Doing some digging.

Jacobs was competing to be the top backup swing tackle for Denver. Seems like many thought he would have secured that job. He can play on either side and looked good this preseason, albeit against lesser competition.

From what I can tell, the Rams were playing Thomas at guard - but McVay seemed to intimate that he was the final cut and it was a tough decision - they just had too many guys already on the OL.
I wonder how the relationship is between Mayo and Nick Caley, and if Mayo was able to get feedback on this from Caley.

That's a good question. I'd guess the relationship is decent. Caley probably has relatively good intel on the linemen, working with tight ends. At the same time, I'm sure the Rams were probably hoping to get him on their PS, so is it in their best interest to help the guy get claimed?

The beauty of this is that it’s going to make all the fair weathers move on to another team. Hopefully somewhere with a history of extreme suckage a la jete or classic/2017 level incompetence browns with an up and coming qb waiting to fail or a “has been-never was” like AR…
Will the pink hat ladies move on?

We have 1 legitimate DT/34 DE (300lb dude) and we use 2 or 3 on almost every 1st and second down.
Barmore and Guy who were instrumental in us being #1 in ypc allowed are being replaced by Friends U, arena league, usfl 27 year old with 90 career snaps Pharms and Ekuale who played 53 snaps last year and had a career total of 921 snaps in 5 years in the league.
How is that NOT a disaster?

Ridley has a 10 mill first year hit. They didn’t need to set aside 40 mill.
Guy was replaced by White. A line of Baremore, White, Wise, Godchaux looked good especially with Baremore being so good and White looking strong. Hard to argue prioritizing DL with so many other holes. Now take away the best player at the end of July...and yes, its not pretty.

To be fair, they did address DL with a 299 pound DT waiver claim so its not like they ignored it.

Guy was not replaced by White. White was in the team last year playing a different position/role than Guy.

The defense we play in the base has 2 DTs and a 3rd DL that is either a DT playing over the T to fortify the run D or DE (such as Wise)
So our base last year was either Godchaux-Barmore-Guy or Godchaux-Barmore-wise. And all 4 roster playing a similar amount of snaps. (Guy got the fewer total snaps because he played less in passing downs)
So our DL was a rotation of those 4 players with 3 playing each down in the base.

White was part of the mix before Judon was injured, subbing for Wise.
Once Judon was injured White was moved the OLB/Edge and that is where he is this year so he is not part of the DL rotation.

So out 4 man rotation (and it must be at least a 4 man rotation because these guys needs breaks) is Godchaux-Wise-?-? That is the guts of the run defense. We are literally missing half the pieces and the guys filing those roles are literal nobodies.

Are you seriously telling me that you think it’s a positive that the position is so bad that they claimed a guy who got cut, and you consider that to be addressing being down to of 4 “starters”?

If our starting RB or WR was a guy from Friends university who is 27 years old and has only played 90 NFL snaps after bouncing through the arena league and usfl are you concerned? And if the answer is “don’t worry we found a guy another cut who plays that position” you consider that good work by the front office?

Keep beating that drum…
Were there any worth while OT's free agents we failed to pursue? We did pursue two good receivers who chose to go elsewher? The under the cap money will have to be spent next year or next we should be in a better position after drafting early again.

A range of 2 to 8 wins at this time seems reasonable.
Not to be critical, but 2 to 8 wins is such a wide range I do not see how it is a reasonable prediction. The idea with a prediction is to suggest a narrow range that demonstrates insight. 2 to 8 wins means just about anything. 8 wins could, very unlikely, but could be a playoff team. 2 wins is likely the worse team in the league. So the predication that the Pats will be between the worse team in the league and a playoff team really is not a prediction.

Let me re-state 3 of your points. Do I have it right? I tend to agree.

1) Our Defense will be worse because we lost Belichick.
Compared to 2023, that is the big loss, not the loss of a few weeks of Judon. We will likely get a few weeks of Barmore. We gain Gonzo and Jones. But, yes, the loss of Barmore and Judon makes the Defense much worse in 2024 than if they had played. (There will always be injuries).

2) We should have spent more.
You consider it irrelevant that we will push $35M or so forward, because you don't think that we will do what we should in 2025 and spend to the limit and beyond (through contract structure).

3) We should have signed a top defensive player or two.
Sure, we all rail about LT, but the reality is that we have weaknesses in 2024 and beyond in the front seven. It simply doesn't compute. The best that we could get was Watts and Ximines? Really?

Great synopsis. I agree. The debate is how important the 3 areas are. For example, our defense might be worse without Belichick but it might only be slightly worse. I believe that not signing a few top defensive players in FA is something we will regret. I think we should try to pick off a few top FAs every year, whether they are on offense of defense (BPA). This year it would have to have been defensive FA guys.

That money never has to be spent.
Were there probowl Ts available, no. Were there better tackles than the slugs we have, yes.

A player that really intrigues me is offensive tackle Demontrey Jacobs, the guy is a better athlete than Okorafor and Lowe. But what is really interesting is that he has a ridiculously wide arms and wingspan along with being a better athlete. And I don't mean a little, Okorafor has a wide wingspan and so does Lowe... Jacobs is stupid wide. His wingspan is as wide as Trent Browns. It has to be one of the widest wingspans in the entire league at 87 3/8 inches.

His arms are a freakish 36.18 inches. That would make him (at least according to this site) the NFL player with the 33rd longest arms ever:

(Note that not all in this list are tackles).

Feel free to post whatever you want.

So when we attempt to win and get blown out, that’s ok with you because we attempted to?
yes an attempt is acceptable, why wouldn't it be? in the case of the 2 wide receivers we made offers to,we didn't exactly low ball. They chose not to be here. Roster decisions over the last 2-3 years are more difficult to accept versus failed attempts at signing players. My opinion.

So every bad decision is fine because they attempted to make a good one? That’s not really his competition works.

We were outbid for one, and today we learned the 49ers weren’t trading Aiyuk unless they got a top WR in return, so that seems to have just been a facade.

He and @Wozzy among others have given plenty of missed options over the last couple of months. The FO bought low early and waited to see how it played out. Expected results.
I'll stand by my post, going back to June is a couple months. A search that found no specific players or "missed options". Lots of talk centered on the offense.

If Barmore was healthy and they kept Judon( which they mightve done if Barmore was healthy) this defense would easily be top 5 in the nfl this year. Easily.
**** happens. As it is they'll still be good but probably not top 5.
Barmore was poised for an All-Pro year.
Just hope he can play again at some point

If Jordan is gone, the good Captain will be on suicide wstch.

I was, but am once again between homes so I'm trying to catch-up tonight... Was Jordan re-signed to the practice squad?

Back to the immediate subject of the thread - the four claimed players. Interesting that they all have excellent RAS scores.

Their vertical & 225 #s suggest a lack of explosion into their contact; that's the first step into getting *****-slapped by power.

Yes he does and played LT in college at a high level (along with G ofc). He should have been an LT here from the start.
