Player Signing Patriots Claim 4 on Waivers

Why would you wait until next year? Why wouldn’t you get good players who can grow with your team instead of fielding half a team and needing to do 2 years of improvement in one?

As we progress through this 2-3 win season, everyone will be realizing what I have already seen.
And next year when Kraft won’t spend on players, then what?
Why do you think they went this way?

I personally would not have but I understand wanting to see if your young talent can cut it. I have a buddy that is an agent and he said that a coach told him you draft for foundation and FA for the bells and whistles and supplement both with trades (I know very open to interpretation). I am assuming he said that because you can't sustain handing out big/moderate sized contracts to get a young core.

Why do you think they went this way?
Kraft.
There is no way he is going to spend money without an assurance of winning.
He doesn’t trust his coach or GM and the QBOTF is a rookie.
He saved $50,000,000, and really if he spent 50 mill in cap it probably would cost 150 mill in cash, if he isn’t going to win.
When we were dominating the league we spent to the cap, but not on an even playing field because we had to spend the cap with a lower cash budget than other teams.
He expected in 2021 that everything would be fixed so he spent money and has *****ed about it ever since.
Mayo thought he was going to make a huge free agency splash and Kraft called him to the principals office and made him retract it.
We went cheap in the coaching staff, cheap on the front office.

There is no competitive football reason to not spend the resources you have to make your team better. None. (The only reason for a one year cap underspending is balancing like the 49ers are doing. They are 40+ mill under because they are 50 mill over next year because they pushed money out)
We have consistently been near the bottom in cash, we asked the GOAT to play for less, we rarely signed free agents at value. We were always cheap, we just found a way to make it work.
Now we are cheapness on steroids because Kraft will not pay a competitive amount if he thinks he will lose.

How is it a competitive strategy to pass on good players to “see what young guys can do”
I have never, ever heard of a coach saying “I can’t figure out if this young guy is any good, so I’m going to put him out in the girls and see if he is”.
Why would you not want to create a talent level on your team that you have to compete against for playing time?

Every team gets to draft. If you think you can only get players by drafting them then you rely on being luckier with your picks to gain any ground on the teams you are competing against.

Is it really acceptable to say we suck at this position but I don’t want bring anyone in because I want wait until the future and try drafting someone and see how they do.

So do you think they were just going to try to sneak that Aiyuk contract past Kraft when his head was turned the other way, or…? I don’t understand this logic.

I love how we have the worst roster in the NFL are headed for a miserable season, and could have spent $50,000,000 more on players to make the team better, and with no other activity on this board people are crying g that we already talked about it.
This is a patriots message board and the franchise has made a severe departure from trying to be competitive. What else is there to talk about?

Wow!

Andy often makes some good points, but trying to understand his logic is a very, very tall order.

The refs finally enforcing the rules about the tackles being on the line of scrimmage is definitely going to make it harder for them. Look for more quick pressure around the edges.
Then screen the defenses to death.

Parcells always said run straight at them too.

Honestly, I think the discussion in the media about Aiyuk was because the team never expected Aiyuk to sign and it was a way to say “look we sent cheap”
Aiyuk said day 1 he would only go to Pittsburgh so we’re making offers we knew weren’t real.

Same as Kraft coming out and blaming Ridley’s girlfriend. It was “see im
Not cheap PR”

If you don’t believe me, tell me what other high profile, or even starting caliber free agent they even made an attempt to sign.
If he was serious about spending that money he would have found player of player(s) for the same cost that would have improved the team as much or more than them.

He also has the same build as Matt Light…but Strange is more athletic. A 100% healthy Strange would be better then any LT on the roster or FA.
The issue is he's past his development years. Transitioning from G to LT out of nowhere at age 26 ain't happening. If it had been a project they engaged in from day 1, then maybe, but we'll never know.

They had a semi-equal 3 man rotation and lost one of the 3, and didn’t replace him. So even with Barmore they are undermanned.
Pharos is not a young guy he is 27 and has played 90 NFL snaps. He went to Friends university and played in the arena league and usfl before landing on our practice squad as a 26 year old. What does “they like him” mean? How does that say anything about him? The worst player in the league is in a team that likes him. There is absolutely no reason to believe at 27 years old that this guy can play in the NFL and you are arguing he is the reason we shouldn’t sign a capable starter to an open starting position where we have no one. Not sure what young edge players have to do with ignoring the DT spot.

Maybe he doesn’t have anything left in the tank, but maybe he does. He was one of the best RBs in the league before last year. What’s to lose? We have numerous players on the 53 man that are useless. Few people on the roster have a chance to ever be as good as he was just the year before last. Do you really think the 4 guys claimed off waivers are so valuable we couldn’t take a shot at an all pro, when we have no all pros? Bizarre logic.
Show me where I argued that we shouldn’t sign another capable DT because of Pharms…I’ll wait.

When I mentioned White, Uche, Jennings I specifically said DL because I know that they aren’t DTs (although White could potentially line up there in certain packages to use his size , power and speed for an inside pass rush).

We can agree to disagree on Cook. I don’t think he has much left and 30 other teams besides the Patriots feel the same way. Is it really bizarre logic that 31 of 32 teams passed up on signing him? I don’t think so.

There's a reason that the Tackles try to offset some from the line of scrimmage - it's a net benefit for them. Expect more sacks.

I get the years thing…it’s valid. However he’s not a complete noob to the position. He’s played LT in college with 2 starts and spot duty there on occasion. I also think his athleticism fits wide zone better than any LT on the roster.

You said this. I assume defending the move is endorsing it.
Guy could offer something but we wanted to get younger obviously. If we really wanted him, we would have kept him.

I know you mentioned DL although they are really OLBs, but that doesn’t explain what it has to do with not addressing the DT position.

You don’t know that 31 teams passed on him. But again, what was there to lose? Why think if all the reasons to not try to improve the team rather than just try to improve it.

I’m sure you are thrilled with the roster we built this year with our 100,000,000 cap room. I wonder is that because you think we are loaded and on our way to dynasty or if you are ok with sucking but not ok with criticizing.
