Man...you're on a tear these days. The offense as a whole is significantly better, save for the offensive line - and that's probably going to have to be the priority draft-wise next April. And you can't throw out the draft picks because they absolutely do matter in this equation, especially given their trouble attracting free agents.

But to answer your question, they're already much improved compared to a year ago:

2023 Week 1 Offensive Skill Players:

JuJu Smith-Schuster
Kendrick Bourne
DeVante Parker
Demario Douglas
Rhamondre Stevenson
Ezekiel Elliott
Ty Montgomery
Kayshon Boutte

2024 Potential Week 1 Skill Players*:
*Obviously depends on final cutdowns, etc.

Demario Douglas
Ja'Lynn Polk
Javon Baker
K.J. Osborn

Tyquan Thornton
Rhamondre Stevenson (who they extended this offseason)
Antonio Gibson (above Montgomery - Elliott played way above expectations last year)
Kayshon Boutte

The ones highlighted in red are players who are absolutely upgrades over that original group, with Smith-Schuster, Parker, and Montgomery being guys who really didn't contribute and hamstrung their ability to do much.

Also, you continue to beat this drum and I get it, you're not happy Bill is gone (and would have been gone in a few years anyway, but his timeline was unfortunately accelerated) and you also can't seem to come to grips with the fact that the team came off last season in a state where they were so bad that literally no one wants to sign here.

I've already stated the issue with postseason incentives, which players absolutely want a shot at. And again, short of guaranteeing 100% of their salary and overpaying to the point of obscene, you're not going to sway a player who would prefer to be elsewhere.

You keep calling Kraft cheap and I get it, you don't like him. But adding logic to the equation given how players spurned us, I don't know what you believe the team could have done to convinced those elite guys to come here without sweetening the deals so much that now you look financially irresponsible while also sabotaging future negotiations with your own players.

Look at what Cleveland did, as the lone prime example of a team offering a deal that was way too good to pass up to go to a bad football team. Deshaun Watson absolutely didn't want to go there. So the Browns went to the extreme of guaranteeing his contract and paying him a deal so outrageous that you saw the following offseason with Lamar Jackson's deal that even the rest of the league went, "those guys were nuts, and that contract was ridiculous, we're not paying him (or any other player) that."

Imagine New England throwing out deals like that this offseason since guys didn't want to come here. I can only imagine the commentary on the money being thrown around, and then seeing it play out down the road when it came time to resign similar players. It would be an absolute mess. Look at Washington and the deals they threw around at one point. That formula doesn't work long-term. And you know that.

They were a terrible team heading into this offseason and it is what it is. Let's revisit this next April after they've hopefully gone all-in on the offensive line and really have a better nucleus around Maye, who will also hopefully be in a better spot coming off his rookie year.
Basically you are anointing the rookies as better than veterans.
Im not sure how Gibson is at RB2 being an upgrade to RB3 is relevant. And that says you accept the OL is worse.

It has nothing to do with BB being fine it has to do with what was done to put a competitive team on the field in 2024.

It’s kind of disingenuous for you to take valid points I have made and add comments like “I know you don’t like him”. Kraft is cheap, certainly at least this year. Whether I like him or not doesn’t change that.
There were dozens of free agents at all levels this year. Not getting the highest priced guy isn’t an excuse for not improving any piece of your team. (Your an only improvement argument is projecting draft picks. Everyone gets draft picks using them doesn’t indicate a plan to improve)

I’m sorry but I just don’t buy that we are the only team ever to try to give our money to players and they didn’t want it. The 43,000,000 we didn’t spend us doing nothing for us.
It seems the conclusion is they gave up on this year and maybe we can try again next year. Our differences seem to be that you are fine with that and I am not.

Name 3 things that are better about the team today than last year without saying the draft picks who haven’t played yet will be great, because there is no way of knowing that.

I think Mayo is gone after year 2 but I hold out the possibility that he will get a 3rd year because we were tanking.

1.) Return of Gonzalez/Judon.

2.) Return of mediocre QB play which is an upgrade over Jones/Zappe.

3.) Eventual return of Bourne.

4.) Minus loss of Barmore.

5.) Year 2 leap for guys like Gonzo, White, Sow, Pop, Baringer, and maybe Ryland.

6.) AVP as an OC....got to be better than BoB/Patrica/Judge the last two years.

That is 5 things.....

I would say it's the same - minus Trent Brown. The left will remain an issue and my guess is they'll pull the fire handle with Onwenu again on the right to at least solidify that side if it becomes unsustainable.

You keep saying that. Again, how do they land free agents without giving them Deshaun Watson-esque contracts? Overpay the annual value? Or guarantee 99% or all of the deal? If I don't want to work somewhere, it would take a significant offer that would be too good to walk away from for me to go work there. And NFL players have far more leverage than I do.
There were dozens of free agents at all levels this year. Not getting the highest priced guy isn’t an excuse for not improving any piece of your team.
Again, you keep saying this as well. You listed off this long list of names of who was available the last time I went here with you, yet you didn't list off any of the players out of that group you would have preferred to have seen them sign.
I’m sorry but I just don’t buy that we are the only team ever to try to give our money to players and they didn’t want it.
No, it's simply the first time we've experienced it firsthand in 20+ years, which is why it sticks out. It happens every offseason, we've just never been through it. You might not buy it, but this is just how it is.

You also know how important drafting is, and the lack of good drafting, even when Bill and Brady were here, absolutely impacted them. They got away with it because they had a once-in-a-generation QB. Now they're back among the mortals of the league, and it can't work that way. They now need a young nucleus around the QB to be able to win.
It seems the conclusion is they gave up on this year and maybe we can try again next year. Our differences seem to be that you are fine with that and I am not.
They didn't give up, but they only had so much draft capital to work with, and there weren't enough quality players - or ones they believed where good enough to help them - they could get to come here in free agency. I'm not fine with it, but I'm just being realistic.

There's a new head coach, new staff, and a new foundation being installed. You're under this impression that in a perfect world, they could have reloaded with all the top free agents and suddenly become a Super Bowl contender. For a guy who has followed this club as long as you have (even pre Brady), I'm stunned you believe that and/or feel that way. You don't build a team through free agency. You build it through the draft and as @203Pat said, you supplement the roster from there.

Again, tell me which guys you would have liked to have seen signed so I can at least try and figure out who you're upset they didn't get. Otherwise, going on about how cheap Kraft is, the $43,000,000 they have, firing Bill, etc. just makes it hard to have a tangible discussion when you're making generalizations without any context.

How did Tennessee sign a whole bunch of free agents? Really pretty much every team did but us.
Would you rather pay a little extra and have a good player or not have players?
Dozens of players signed free agent contracts this year, none were Deshaun Watson deals. He isn’t even a comparison to improving DT, OL, CB, ILB, RB and depth across the roster night mention the WR position.

Your argument is that they wasn’t a single free agent in the entire NFL that could improve the talent on a 4 win team?

I have listed 70 free agents and traded players that would have helped this team. I also listed just the players Tennessee signed that would have netted us about 8 starters for less money than we have left.
Why can they do it but we can’t?

If your honest answer is you think the team should ignore improving the roster until they have 3-4 drafts and add maybe 10 players (while losing many they already have during that time) I don’t know what to say.

You seem to have every excuse in the book to give the organization a pass on putting a good team on the field.

You’ve repeated the same excuses many times and I dint believe any of them are valid. We are going Into the season with 1 arm tied behind our back and people think that’s good because we are the only team ever that couldn’t sign free agents.

Again, you listed 70 free agents, but zero players you would have liked to have seen them sign.

And on offense, they're realistically one high-quality left tackle (with Onwenu on the right if need be) from being able to compete up front. They've got several good guards and I would say center behind Andrews would be a need.

And if the wideouts continue to pan out, possibly a high-quality receiver, which there will be several available next offseason. By then, the outlook here should be a little better if they show some growth and maybe that sways one of them.

They're not that far away. Not with the nucleus they have on the other side of the ball. They need another higher tier cornerback and some more depth behind whoever that ends up being as Jonathan Jones certainly isn't getting any younger and Marcus Jones' health remains a concern. I don't think it will take 3-4 drafts, which, with all due respect, is a bit of an exaggeration. They're a few pieces away and the outlook is significantly better than a year ago. Not ideal, but absolutely improved compared to where they were at this time a year ago.

When did I say they could have become a Super Bowl contender? I said they refused to use their resources. Given that they didn’t this year, why would they next year? We always spent to the cap before now. But we did it on low cash to cap. I think the real reason behind all of this is that when you have a lot of cap space it takes a lot of cash that year. Because the cash, if you sign sought after players exceeds the cap by a lot.
Kraft had a cash limit, which it seems he always had, and that not left us 43 mill short off spending to the cap. Why would he suddenly open the coffers next year?
Mayo expected to spend it, but was told otherwise and had to apologize to the media.

Look it’s his team, he can be cheap if he wants. But as a fan that’s a problem for me. It doesn’t have to be a problem for you we all watched the lean years when we didn’t have talent, it’s just a lot more fun to win.

They should have competed for all 70 and signed the ones they could.

If you move Onwenu to T you create a hole at G. Who are several good one? We have 1 good OL 2 decent and the rest are barely backup caliber or belong in the league.

They are farther away today than any team in the NFL with the possible exception of Carolina.

Defensively is going to be where people lose it in this team this year because the expectations are unrealistic. Who plays DT? Who plays on the edge if Judon leaves? Where is the LB depth? Who is the 3rd safety on a team that uses 3. We haven’t made a single addition on defense. And we subtracted the brains. I stated the other day that the defense will be in the bottom 1/4 of the league (25-32) in yards, points or both. Curious where you expect them to be. And factor in that every team has injuries.

The only place that I see that we are clearly better than a year ago is the hope that we may have drafted the QB. Other than that I don’t see a position or unit that was improved with any level of confidence unless you think rookie WRs will have miracle seasons.

It's not the 70 free agents, it's who he would have liked to have seen them sign that I'd like to know about.
they should have signed every one of them that they could.

When did I say they could have become a Super Bowl contender?
You want them to contend. That’s what they’d ultimately be contending for.

You keep repeating they’re not using resources and calling Kraft cheap, yet you won’t tell us who you believe they should have signed, or how they might have swayed them into coming here.

Is it with the annual value, guaranteeing most of or all of the deal? Paying that player at the top of the position even if they’re not worth it? How should they have swayed that player? You don’t have to be right, but getting some sort of an opinion makes it a discussion we can at least have with more context.

Otherwise, it’s basically a “Kraft is cheap” thread without any real substance to understand where you believe they missed out on or whoever you believe out of that group of 70 names they should have spent the money on.

1) we had those players last year.
2) barely
3) we had him last year
4) big minus
5) there is no competitive advantage, every teams year 2 players can improve
6) that’s a hope. He has never called plays before.

It’s interesting that everything you list other than the unproven OC and a place holder qb has nothing to do with an attempt to upgrade the team. You seem to agree they really didn’t try.

1.) Only for 4 or so games. We were competitive in the first 3 games before getting blown out in big D (Boutte not getting his feet inbounds in week 1, Strange short of 1st down marker in week 2, and beat the Jete). The defense allowed 52 points (7 was a Slay pick six) over 3 games before giving up 30+ to the Cowboys/Saints in back to back weeks.

2.) Brissett is a HUGE upgrade over what Jones/Zappe gave us last year. Jones/Zappe basically "threw away" games with killer turnovers. The expectation is that Brissett will struggle, but not have killer turnovers. And because of Brissett we can play complementary football with the D and ST units carrying the team.

3.) We barely had him for half of the season...and there was no doubt that he was our best WR.

4.) Yup, a big minus. Agree.

5.) There is a competitive advantage over teams who did not have draft picks in said player's round last year, signed a FA unfamiliar with their system to play in said role, etc.... 2nd year leaps are the advantage of having a young guy in your system for over a year who is able to play faster with more decisiveness. A rising tide raises all boats, but some boats rise higher than others because some work was done on the hull...so to speak.

6.) AVP should be an improvement due to his commitment to the zone blocking scheme. Belichick/Patricia tried it two years ago before ditching it and BoB largely tried to work with what we had. Still, we'll see......we resigned Onwenu who is probably better suited to a regular blocking scheme and haven't seen Strange who should excel in a zone blocking scheme. Either way....AVP will be an improvement just because he is a new face.

Last, but not least....we tried to upgrade the team. See Calvin Ridley in FA, entering the Aiyuk talks, drafting a WR in round 2, and etc... we were devoid of offensive game breakers last year. It was wiser to resign/extend our core players like Onwenu/Henry/Dugger/Barmore/Peppers/etc... we still have a lot of cap space going into 2025 to get an OT and a WR in free agency. By that time, we likely will know what we have in Maye...and so will any FAs we may sign.

3 year tanking plan? Nah....I am even thinking playoffs this year....

You dont want them to contend? I think expecting improvement when you have the resources is very reasonable.

I haven’t a list of 70 players that would have made us a better team that changed teams through free agency or trades
That is the pool we should have signed players from. First they had to pursue them, and they pursued very few. You are making the excuse they couldn’t sign them when in fact they never tried.

It would be by competing in the market. Paying the price it takes to get the player who make you better. I’m not sure if you are being facetious. Are you asking me to explain how free agency works?

1) they had 55 million to spend in new free agents (after throwing 8 at brissett) they spent 12.
2) there wasn’t really any reporting about players they tried to sign other than Ridley. So who did they even go after
3) i ain’t accept that no one would come here because as long as there has been free agency bad teams with cap space sign players.
4) I listed 70 players that would have improved the team. Not a random list of free agents. I largely excluded older players. They all changed teams so were available.
5) I would have negotiated with those players and signed as many of them as I could You know the way every other team handles free agency.

1) So you are counting in no injuries this year? We won 1 game with those guys.
2) brissett is 18/30 and his trans had better rosters around him.
3) we were 2-6 with him and he is currently injured
4) guy is gone too DT is weak
5) every team drafts. Making your picks doesn’t improve you in relation to the other 31 teams
6) even you didn’t buy that one.

Missing on 2 guys that would have cost you 10 mill while sitting in 43 and upgrading nothing isn’t trying. Signing their own us status quo if a 4 win team. Signing some big your own AND UPGRADING THR WEAKNESSES is trying.

You listed 70 players. You won’t tell us who you would have liked to have seen them sign. Meaning you don’t feel strongly enough about anyone in particular who you feel would have made an impact. If you don’t love any of them in particular, why should the team?

And yes, I’d love them to contend. But I’m going into this expecting growth and a competitive season, I don’t expect them to be in the AFC Championship game or playing next February. I’ll judge the wins and losses based on how they play, and I’ll temper my expectations from there.

1) we had those players last year.
Where was Judon and Gonzalez? Marcus Jones too?

A 4 - 13 team improves through the NFL draft because they select early.

But, you choose to throw the entire 2024 draft out.

Brian is the safeties coach, Mayo and covington along with pelligrino are all still here. I have no worries with the defense. They will be fine.. the offense is my main focus this season..
I think that group is good enough to maintain continuity, but I have no doubt there will be a game where Belichick’s absence will hurt. Add me to the list of people wondering just how big of a loss that’s going to be and whether or not Bill’s impact on Mayo at least minimizes it as much as can be expected.

I know it sounds funny to say, But I also worry about what happens beyond this year if they have a good season and any of the guys on the staff get poached. That’s been an issue in the past and they definitely don’t have the ability at this point to handle that, which is something they’ll need to do a better job of preparing for compared to what we saw previously.
