To be fair the team was in pretty dire straights at WR when Osborn was signed. Since then the team drafted two WR and at least some of the players from last year have shown good improvement which makes the signing look a bit wonky at this point.

I disagree with this. The Pats couldn’t defend any TE’s in 2006 and was one main reason for their collapse against the Colts in the AFCCG. While AD was known as a pass rusher in Baltimore, Bill thought outside the box and believed his speed could be used to also defend TE’s. He erased TE’s in 2007 and had 2 sacks in the Super Bowl. If it weren’t for the OL holding on the helmet catch play, he wouldn’t possibly had a game clinching 3rd sack.
