The Patriots had to come away from the 2024 draft with a QB... period. They had absolutely no shot at doing that and coming away with Marvin Harrison, Malik Neighbors or Rome Odunze... short of selling their first born son. After them, the only X receiver that warranted an attempted trade up or was worth a first round grade was Xavier Leggette, and by all accounts they tried to trade up to grab him but Buffalo wasn't willing to trade within the division. Once he was gone, there were still some good WR's left but not one that distinguished himself from the others. One could argue Adonai Mitchell, but he had more red flags than dating a stripper.
So when it came to the second round IMO there were two blue chip tackles left on the board and one WR who was a head case... this even after the Patriots traded back. Javon Baker had the same grade as Jaylen Polk... Baker was taken in the fourth. Meanwhile the two tackles I had graded out as bluechip players were taken by Andy Reid and Mike McDaniels in the second. What you're attempting to do is get first round value in the second round... taking a solid possession receiver in Polk does not accomplish that in my estimation, even if he turns into a decent player.
Mike Lombardi repeats a great line he took from someone else, it says "bad offensive lines don't travel." Which means they look good against the dregs and at home, but fold when it comes to the playoffs and playoff caliber defenses. Truly if you look at a team like the Bengals, outside of last season they've had a top flight defense, a generational QB, super weapons all around... but they get trounced in the playoffs eventually because their RB's can't run and their QB gets sacked 5-7 times a game. The Dolphins have the best superweapon in the NFL in Tyreek, they got bounced in the wildcard round two years in a row.
Arrested development? This isn't fantasy football, it's real life football.
Football is won in the trenches, both sides of the ball... the more things change, the more they stay the same.
