Rookies Report For Training Camp

I really liked the Polk pick and think he will lead the team in TD receptions with maybe 800 yards, but I think Pop has the most catches.
I do too. If polk had a dobson type year that would be good as well. Dobson had 500 plus yards that season as a rookie.

Having stability at QB makes everyone's job easier. The owner has his face of the franchise, the GM does not have to invest expensive resources to find that guy and the coach has the most important piece for executing the game plan. At a minimum a known quantity at QB ensures that the team will be competitive year to year. To me, Drake seems like the real deal. He has already demonstrated that he is committed to excellence, even if it takes a year or two to be the guy.

Stability at the QB position is going to be a huge concern this season, maybe not from the coaching staff, but from the media and fans. Let me explain: There is a very good possibility that the Patriots are going to have a rough beginning of the season. They could even go 0-8, although that sounds far-fetched.

No matter who is at QB, the fans and the media are going to roast the QB and demand a change or changes. Thing could get very rough for Maye if he is playing; I would rather see him safely on the sidelines until the fire storm passes.

I suspect that Brissett will start and get blamed for the losses and then Kraft will step in and demand that Maye plays. Ugh...

Polk is a real mystery to me. His clocked times are not very impressive, but from the college highlights I saw, he seems to be able to get open. If this is the case, it is a welcome change from the Patriots getting all lovey-dovey about WR with great 40 and 3-cone times, but cannot get open. Didn't Jerry Rice run a 4.71?

Training camp is going to very very, very interesting....

Trust me, Drake Maye will leave people in awe, he starts they are not going anywhere near 0-8

The mystery in Polk and Baker is their agility, as neither ran those drills in pre-draft. I'd prefer they did, but their college tape also shows a fair level of production and quicks. You don't do what they do without some mobility. Both guys look like good route runners, very physical, and have at least good size and speed. I like the draft picks, even if I preferred an offensive tackle in the 2nd round first... I can't complain about the prospect.
Didn't Jerry Rice run a 4.71?
Rice ran 4.5 at the combine and 4.4 in private workouts, not ridiculous speed... but good. One measurable doesn't make a player, it's the brain first, then the combination of all the measurables sets the ceiling.

4.5 is plenty fast if you're great at your position... 4.2 is just better.
Training camp is going to very very, very interesting....
They might find themselves with a logjam at the WR position, if all the young guys show up and the older guys are healthy. It's a good problem to have... if it happens.

"Tyler Hughes was hired from the University of Washington to be the wide receivers coach."

Seems like T Hughes was very familiar with Polk and quite a few other WR's from Washington ie.. R Odunze and J McMillan.

I agree with you. This is a transition year, by definition there are going to be ups and downs. Brady was wildly inconsistent when he was getting started, yet he and the team gave you the confidence that things were going in the right direction. After going through the hit and miss with Mac, most fans understand that if the team is staying together and things are building towards the future they need to be patient. The media will say whatever they think will get attention, negativity pays. AVP, Mayo, Wolf AND the Kraft's need to have the discipline and balls to give Maye the time needed to give him the best chance to develop. If he can't legitimately beat out Brissett then he should sit until he can win the job. We will know more very soon.

Jesus...what is with the cheesy little kids photos the Pats are doing? This was the type of **** we didn't see when Bill was around. Is Mayo going to hand out orange slices and Capri Suns after practice too?
They should have come with pink hats!

Yes sir... he was the guy who had the insight on polk..

A logjam at the number two WR position without a true number one WR.
Nobody knows if Polk, Baker or even Thornton might develop into a #1… nobody here can even describe the exact criteria for what makes a “#1.”

The need for a #1 receiver is a myth.

David Patten stretched the field and provided a deep threat which opened up underneath routes.

David Givens was a big strong physical presence who could win on the outside.

Troy Brown was the ultra quick slot receiver who could win in a phone booth and take advantage of the middle of the field.

Kevin Faulk was a quick shifty RB who could catch like a WR and makes plays out of the backfield and on outlet passes.

None of these guys was some ridiculously talented superweapon, they all had a role and attacked an area of the field which allowed the others to do the same. The QB threw to the open man.

The overriding need for a superweapon is a myth. The Chiefs haven’t had one the last two years and won rings.

Just about every NFL team can identify thier number 1 at WR.. I say pop currently is that guy until further notice

Funny how they all had an all world QB throwing to them. The Patriots don’t have one right now.

So you can’t tell us what it means, nobody can…

In 2001 Brady wasn’t an “All World QB,” he was ranked 24th in the NFL at 190 passing yards per game… you were 12 years old and still believed in superheroes so I understand your confusion.

You always tell us wins and points matter the most and now it seems they don’t. Weird.

If you don’t have an all world QB and the Pats are one of many teams who don’t- then a #1 receiver is very helpful.
