Why does that matter? We are a team going nowhere this year. The signing won't help. Let's just waste the money to make posters and fans feel better. NOT!

That being said, we would probably win a couple of more games if we signed a WR and a couple of defensive backs.

Disagree completely. Tavai is a good player who can contribute in a variety of ways, and you need a bunch of those players to build a strong overall roster. Good price, good signing. Wolf is doing a good job of putting together the roster for the next few years, while leaving plenty of cap space to bring in some top end talent in next year’s free agency.

That we have addressed every need aside from elite number 1 and booked Left Tackle .
#1 WR as a need is a myth… fan fiction.

Find 4-5 good weapons who can catch the ball, that’s all you need. The 2024 Patriots have that already assuming health.

It’s far more important to have 5 offensive linemen who can make it possible for all these other players to do their job.

The fact that you think Tavai could be so easily repalced is why your ability to evaluate people is proven to be horrid. I swear that a minimum-wager with no experience evaluating football could perform in a similar fashion as you.

Tavai has gotten better each year he's been here. You thinking it was a waste means it's money well spent.

There have been so many extensions because the guys getting the extensions weren't the issue. The guys who are gone were the issue. From Mac Jones to Trent Brown to Matt Patricia and a lesser extent Belichick.
I don't understand why some fans don't see that. The team's poor record was because of the historically poor offense they had and not much to do with their defense. Having no QB at all can do that.

Which still belongs in a lthread about Wr’s, or skill positions, not a thread about signings on defense.

MG was referring to signing a WR and LT - not Tavai.

The Pats gave up an average of 28 points a game to teams .500 and above as opposed to 16 points to teams below .500 in 2023. So the defense isn’t off the hook. The new faces on defense have been overmatched by good teams since TB left. Anytime they face a team with speed, they get badly exposed.

With a questionable OL and a QB who plays without urgency, we’ll see a lot of what happened last year - opposing offenses letting the game come to them knowing the Pats can’t score and the defense will eventually crack.

so your answer to getting ready for 2025 is to lose 6 defensive starters and sign a #1 WR and a # LT?

Where were they supposed to find this WR1 and/or a high level starting LT, after they decided (rightly, in my opinion) that they would use #3 on Maye? They went hard after the top WR in FA and made an aggressive offer. It didn’t work out. There were no elite OTs in this free agent class, no surprisingly.

If you are going to criticize Wolf and Co., you should also tell us what you would have done to secure this stud WR and top LT. Do tell….and please make it realistic.

Now that everyone's done slapping each others' backs over the Jalopy signing... When's the New boss gonna sign people we actually, you know, like, need... such as a LT, Alpha WR, backup/developmental 3rd-down RB and Outside CB (or two)?

They signed a legit 3rd down RB who has also had success in the NFL as a runner on the first day of free agency. Give us the names of the starting LTs and “alpha” WRs that were available to “sign”. We’ll wait.

Nothing in Free Agency, but making a more aggressive trade up the boards or trading a future 1st is the only way they are securing either one.

IMO, yours is a reasonable position. HOWEVER, I believe that this should be accompanied by making sure that we continue to have a top Defense, overpaying for our veterans if necessary.

I do expect us to be able to sign or trade for a WR in free agency in the next offseason. And yes, it could take a future first, but a 2nd plus a $20-25M contract is also possible.

Giving away what should be a top 5 pick to spend franchise tag money for a player is a really bad idea, especially when all they have to do is wait until the next offseason to fill both needs at a much lower cost. I’m not sure when you are going to realize that this team isn’t going to contend this year, and paying through the nose right now makes no sense.

Then that’s my mistake and my apology to mg.

I have never seen an offense hang a defense out to dry the way the Patriots offense has the last 2 seasons. Time and time again the Patriots defense fought tooth and nail against opponents only to run out of gas in the second half because they had spent the entire game onThe field, especially against the good teams.

Jalopy Tavai.
A minimum-wager could perform in similar fashion to the Jalopy. Waste of ****ing money.

This is a signing of which Little Billy Notgoat himself would approve, and for which he would've been Justifiably lambasted.

Never seen so many re-signings/extensions from a 4-13 team.

Keeping dudes whom the HC "likes": Meet the New boss...
Jahlano Tavai

.
I expect the Defense to better this year.

They will be on the field less and several players will return from IR. Also, the Offense will have fewer turnovers, especially close to our goal line.

The only way we find out is if the offense catches up, but that is unlikely this year. Next year is best case scenario. Many teams had this issue after their initial success. Ravens and Bucs had a hard time after their Super Bowl wins in the early 2000's. The 2015 Broncos and 2017 Jaguars had short windows. Point is, no matter how good you think the defense is, it's very difficult to duplicate it's success year in and year out and key players will leave. The 49ers defense has been showing some cracks. They need to get it done now!

This is so ridiculous of you.

There are NO LTs to Sign.

They just added TWO WRs in the Draft, they have numerous on the roster. FFS, we went over a decade without a "ALPHA WR".

The Pats have a back-up RB in Gibson. They also have Harris who ran pretty well despite the crappy O-line.

The Pats are likely to sign Gilmore for an Oustide WR, but the fact you're over-looking Wilson and Austin is why your opinions are always junk.

I agree with everything you said, the only value I see in brigning in a franchise WR now is accelerating Mayes progress and building rapport right away with a top weapon.
I don’t think we can understate how important Mayes develop is for the next decade of this franchise.

Wrong thread.

From Reiss ”Tavai played 74% of the Patriots' defensive snaps last season and 78% of the special teams snaps. He is the only NFL player in the past decade to play at least 70% of his team's special teams snaps and at least 70% of his team's snaps on offense or defense in a season."

His deal is a bargain for his role.

There really isn't much to debate. Everything else is complaining about the past or complaining about what could have been done elsewhere and this does not prevent any of it.
