Tavai was a strong role player last year and $5-6 million a year is a nothing deal. It is a good signing. I don’t get why people would be upset with this. It isn’t like they gave him $10 million a year.

Sorry delete my thread. Seems like the new regime has basically surmised they felt like the quarterback and coach were the main problems the last few years. They have re-signed so many guys at this point.

I don’t get that at all. They have to keep the core players. They let the crap players go like they did with guys like Parker.

My guess their strategy is that they didn’t want to make a big splash in free agency this past year because they were in year one of a rebuild and didn’t even have their QB yet and free agency was weak at position of needs and a glut at positions they have players.

I am guessing they are waiting to make a splash after they have built up the foundation of the team. If Maye and a few rookies hit this year, the Pats will likely be much more aggressive next year to add players through free agency.

I would just add that every player they brought back, re-signed or extended were good/great players... it's not like these guys stunk. The results of the 2023 team stunk but it's a team game, the defense was great last year. Individual players like Onwenu still played well. It's entirely possible for great players to be stuck on a bad team, it happens all the time.

2nd in total tackles, 2nd in solo tackles, 5th in tackles for a loss, 1st in forced fumbles, 7th in passes defensed, 1st in interceptions... and played the 5th most defensive snaps on the team. He was a full-time starter for us last year. The money is reasonable... I agree, there's no reason to complain.

Tavai's career is similar to Vrabel, Ninkovich and Van Noy. Unheralded guy who works hard and learns the system to become a solid, reliable player who earns a second contract. They are a great value for the team because they cost less than a high profile player with the same production.

I don't hate the strategy overall because I think most of the players they brought back are all pretty good. I think signing Stevenson and Tavai right now wasn't really necessary but both are solid players and neither of their contracts will hinder them from doing anything else in the next few years. At this point on the NFL timeline free agency seems so watered down. Most of the available guys are in the ballpark of 30 or some sort of distressed asset. I think as most of us know at this point, the true way to build a team is through the draft and that is what this regime seems to understand so far. When you find guys in the draft who can play you retain them. Even if all the re-signed guys maintain their same level of play and we hit on Maye and one of the receivers from this year's draft the rebuild kicks into hyperdrive.

A minimum-wager could perform in similar fashion to the Jalopy. Waste of ****ing money.

This is a signing of which Little Billy Notgoat himself would approve, and for which he would've been Justifiably lambasted.

Never seen so many re-signings/extensions from a 4-13 team.

Keeping dudes whom the HC "likes": Meet the New boss...

Yeah, Wolf is a f*cking moron for keeping another player whom the defensive-minded head coach believes has been and will continue to be important to the success of their defense by signing him to a very reasonable contract that is in keeping with his on-field production over the past two years, amirite?

That head coach has watched hundreds of hours of practice and game film involving Tavai, knows their defensive scheme better than almost anyone alive and has forgotten more about playing linebacker than you will ever know. This signing once again says that you have no f*cking clue what you’re talking about when it come to football, which many of us knew already.

I now recognize that some people just enjoy being miserable c*nts until the day that take their last negative breath. You are obviously one of those c*nts. Enjoy those remaining breaths, bro.

Dude, I'm 100% in favor of the signing, but you make it harder when garbage like this is on that side. You can defend the move without being vile.

The Pats still have $87M projected in free cap space for 2025. That doesn't include any potential carry over from this year, which is likely to be north of $25M.

Am I calculating this right, 89% of 255m is around 227m as the cap floor. So once spending up to the floor we could potentially carry up to roughly 28m over to next year?

Turn the “edge” dial down from 11 to 5 or less if possible

Love it, so well said. Some people will find fault no matter what. Come on guys lets be a tad more possitive

Based on what I remember, he was one of our most reliable players in the field at the end of the year. Always around the ball, he was clearly contributing. 6 Million is a good range, if he can perform similarly in the Mayo era.

For the next 5 years, truth of the matter is that the cap won't be a problem. Only when it's time to sign Drake to hopefully a nfl breaking contract after his SB win, we should really start getting upset about how much they are costing, unless we start spending like crazy in FA, but that has not being the Pats' style for awhile.

Now that everyone's done slapping each others' backs over the Jalopy signing... When's the New boss gonna sign people we actually, you know, like, need... such as a LT, Alpha WR, backup/developmental 3rd-down RB and Outside CB (or two)?

What LT/WR1 is there for us to even get?

David Bakhtiari would be a nice band aid for the short term. I think he's waiting for a desperate team that will pay him without incentives given his injury history.

Nobody else at WR or RB so Pats are going to go with what they have.

Gilmore at CB.

That's kinda what I was thinking. I'd be more mad if there was a pool of talent that was worthwhile the investment, but this was a weak off-season class for a lot of our offensive woes. I'm glad the team didn't play desperate.

Why does that matter? We are a team going nowhere this year. The signing won't help. Let's just waste the money to make posters and fans feel better. NOT!

That being said, we would probably win a couple of more games if we signed a WR and a couple of defensive backs.

You well understand this extension has ZERO to do with whether we sign free agents this year at LT, WR, RB, CB and S. If Wolfe want to sign free agents, he has the cap money this year and in the future to do so.
