9m per year would make Stevenson the 6th highest paid RB in the NFL. But that would still be half the money that Maccafrey makes.

I'm guessing a lot of incentives need to be reached to hit the full 36m. So I'm cautiously optimistic about this deal.

I just hope the money is still available when we finally need to pay an Elite WR1 or LT.

I think being proactive and signing your own impending free agents is the way you ensure there will be money to add key pieces in free agency, just as long as they are well structured deals with the right players. I think the way you screw yourself is by frantically overpaying during free agency to fill needs.

I'm all for guys getting paid... they put thier bodies on the line every snap.. to entertain us... glad for rham to get paid.. showing love to home grown players continues and I like it!
Yup, taking care of their own players is a positive. I couldn't care less what he's making if he helps the team win.

I agree. He's a high maintenance back where his convey of blockers has to execute or he's dead to rights. This was LaGarrette's problem when defenses focused on him in the playoffs as the formations/down and distance was too obvious. He had his woes being taken out of games early. He will be running behind a very mediocre at best OL with opposing defenses not worrying about the QB and the skill players in the passing game. He's going to see a lot of defenders roaming the box.

In an era where it's easy to find capable backs, this re-signing before the season was completely unnecessary. We will be revisiting this signing during the season.
What convey of blockers are you talking about? The Pats OL has been putrid.

PFF had him as 25th rated RB, pretty good player if healthy. As a bad team you have to pay more and we have to use the cap money somewhere. Overall I am not in love but ok with this.

I agree. I am not going to stand up and scream about it being a terrible deal because overall I like the player and I like the new regime showing they want to retain the talent they already have but I don't love investing in a running back. Bill generally pulled guys off the scrap heap and let them walk when their contract was up (unless they were a satellite back they would get a modest deal) and that is the way to operate at the position. That is the main reason why I was so annoyed with the Sony Michel pick is that it seemed like such an anomaly in terms of how Bill treated the position. That and the fact that Michel was just mediocre.

With Bill it worked both ways. The Pats won with retread RBs and with Michel.

Just said in another thread responding to being quoted, I'm not a huge fan of signing him yet. He needs to pick his game up. He barely had 1,000 yards on the ground in 2022 and was projected to have a big drop off even if he played all 17 games in 2023. He's also not had more than 5 rushing TD's in a season.
Well, he averaged five yards a carry and had 69 catches in 2022. He was practically the whole offense and he seemed to do a lot on his own. Granted, last year he wasn't the same, so it's a bit of a gamble. Full disclosure, I don't agree with the argument that you can just get a plug-and-play back in later rounds that seems to be popular these days (not saying that's your position).

Absolutely agree. I haven't seen this done in decades. I believe that we are in a position where we have to retain are home grown players, and send a message to perspective FAs that NE is a place that will pay. Also being 32 or whatever is was in spending didn't help either. I entrust wolf with the ability to correctly identify offensive talent and keep the roster competitive. I'm looking to see judon, and Peppers extended next.

They won with Michel on the roster but not because of Michel. You stopped being able to win in this league about 15 years ago if your RB is the primary focus.
Maroney was also a highly questionable pick, even back then RBs were a dime a dozen and not worth a first rounder (#21 overall), I hated that pick especially because my binky MJD went around pick 60…

I can remember an NFL draft from 20 years ago but not my neighbors name.

His college teammate, Marion Barber, was the better running back and ended up going 3-4 rounds later the year prior. Weird Bill took two first round running backs in his career and both had better college teammates available. Bill was always able to evaluate running backs pretty well as far as value so I assumed both Maroney and Michel would be home runs but it never worked out that way.

Michel led the entire 2018 NFL postseason in carries, yards, yards per game and TD's... but he was just a tourist along for the ride.... sounds legit.

Derrick Henry also had nothing to do with the Titans winning games... sounds legit.

You need a complete team to win rings. Period. Having better players at every position is always a good thing.

We should probably wait for the final details of the contract to emerge, but 4 years 17 million guaranteed for a RB in his prime is not an unwieldy amount of money. This team has cap space coming out of their ears.

You're talking about winning rings and one of the two examples you used never won a ring as the focal point. Also yes, Michel was along for the ride. Behind that offensive line and two tight ends any of the dozen JAG mid round, UDFA running backs could have produced a similar stretch to Sony in that 2018 post season. Sony was never special. He was a JAG.

Michel was the focal point in 2018. Sony was very good, his career was cut short due to knee injuries. You don't play at Georgia or lead the NFL in playoff rushing if you're just a jag.

The Titans failed for various reasons, the biggest was their defense. They weren't good, especially in the defensive backfield. It takes a team. Brady was better with a strong running game and defense around him... it wasn't his magic powers.

People seem to romanticize that 2018 playoff run in regards to Sony. Brady threw for almost 700 yards against the Chiefs and Chargers. Yes Michel ran well but so could Blount, BenJarvus Green-Ellis, Stevan Ridley, or any of the other JAGs in the same circumstances.

Agreed. Michel was great in his playoff run.. but Josh also schemed up alot of runs and blocking schemes for him.. he was drafted with knee injury concerns that ultimately shortened his career.

It was basically a no brainer to extend rham, not only is a good back but the team knows they needed to spend! I commend them for spending on thier own guys... like to see peppers next!

That's one of the reasons why I wanted them to draft Braelon Allen out of Wisconsin. The Jets took him in the 4th round. He's listed at 6'1 235 and is fast for his size and has already decent hands.
And then they drafted Isaiah Davis in the 5th as well. They already have Breece Hall (almost 1,600 yards from scrimmage last year). Their running game should set up Rodgers with plenty of easy, open play-action passes.

Philadelphia will be an interesting team to watch in terms of their running game in 2024 too. They added Saquon Barkley in free agency, drafted Will Shipley in the 4th, plus signed Kendall Milton as an UDFA. Apparently they don't want Jalen Hurts to run the ball anymore.

Buffalo was another team with a nice double dip at RB: Ray Davis in the 4th, Frank Gore Jr as an UDFA - to go with James Cook. Ty Johnson may be out of a job there. NYJ, Philly and Buffalo should all have very good three-headed running groups.

Even if the 4th round was too soon for a RB, there were some good players available late, like Kimani Vidal or Jase McClellan in the 6th. Milton, Gore Jr and Dillon Johnson all would have been nice undrafted rookie additions.
