Things like 2001 Patriots and 2013 Red Sox happen due to a lot of hard work, practicality and paying attention by personnel management, commitment and determination from the players...and just a little bit of luck.

I know this: The Patriots have been losing for a few years now. The players don't like it. And they want to take their frustrations out on our opponents over Kraft's cheapness on amenities and facilities.
I don't think the "amenities and facilities" have a thing to do with it, nor do I think the Krafts have in any other way contributed to the problems. They have been exemplary owners in my view and have struck just the right balance between letting "the football guys do their work" and acting when needed in a managerial/oversight capacity over a team which, after all, they own. If anything, they have been too reluctant to intervene, certainly in the case of a HC/GM who was in an obvious state of decline and failure at least a couple of years prior to his being shown the door. The team blows. The decor has nothing to do with it.

We could very well be winless by the time we play the Jets again. I think we can beat the Jets once, Arizona, Chicago, and Indy (maybe). Maybe we can steal one away from Buffalo or Miami. 5-12 or worse feels about right.

Realistically we need 2-3 more years of great drafting to be in it again because the defense is going to decline as we figure out the offense. I hope I'm wrong. We could be around 7 or more wins if we absolutely nailed this draft and stay healthy.
I see Tennessee, Jacksonville and Seattle as very winnable games.

The defense is borderline built for a sustained run, IMO. I say borderline because we we still need to a few guys (Judon, Tavai, Peppers), but if/when we do, we have a very solid and mostly young core. If we can hit on a DL, an Edge and a CB over the next couple of drafts, we'll be built for the long term.

The offensive timeline depends entirely on the success of this draft class. Imagine that Maye, Polk, Wallace, Robinson and Baker all hit and develop into starters by year 2. Suddenly there are much fewer holes on this roster. With the cap space and draft position we're likely to have we can be a playoff team in 2025. It's not likely, but there is a path.

More likely, a few guys will miss. If Maye is a miss, then we are completely SOL. If Wallace is a miss, then the offense's development probably stalls for 1.5 years (or more, depending on what the 2025 draft offers at LT). Under that assumption, then 2 years of solid drafting i about right.

I usually am on the optimistic side
4-5 wins
Very good defense
New Offense, Rookie Coach, still a huge hole at LT

I`m surprised that the Patriots are not signing every offensive tackle in sight. Instead they are relying
on the ability of the offensive line coaches to shift players from the right side to the left side. By the
time they discover their success or failure, the season will be upon us and our failure will be assured.

Oh I agree. We are a team that can have a very balanced offense. The addition of Gibson gives us that RB change of pace player we've been sorely lacking. He is a threat at WR and RB when he's in the game. We likely will pick up another camp player as we always do as we know guys get Knicked up all the time.
Harris needs to be given more than 34 total carries to prove he can or can’t play in the NFL. It may take preseason for that to happen. He’s not really a different kind of back than Rham…he’s just not as good. We will pick up another released back before game 1 regardless.

Harris has a nose for tough yards, he really didn't get to play much until last season when rham went down. I can't say he's as good or really compare and contrast to rham where as he really hasn't had over say 80 to 90 carries. He has a place on the roster, as you need multiple RBs especially with a 17 game season and this year our Bye week is very late.

But I agree with you on preseason even though Harris isn't a rookie he could use the pre season snaps.

Since 2019, the team has had December collapses with a losing record in every season. The defense is not good enough when they play teams .500 and above for several years now. This season you could see opposing offenses wern't panicking and were patient if drives stalled because they knew they'd get their points eventually. The defense is not at that level yet where they can hold good teams down consistently if the offense stinks. If the offense isn't improved, we will see the same results with the defense getting outmuscled by the better competition.

The defense was put in terrible situations last 2 seasons by the inept NAVY inspired offense. This defense can hang with any offense any QB, WR. They are stout at every level of the defense. The offense just needs to be "reasonable ". If not then just by virtually them on the field all the time then offenses will have more opportunities to score! However I agree with your overall post. I've been impressed with the defense considering just how terrible the offense was, and it's not like we have all- pros all over the defense just all around good players, who play well together, and are disciplined.

This is true, but it's been a long time since we've seen a defense that could carry a straight-up bad offense anywhere. The 2015 Broncos are the last example I can think of. We draw Buffalo and Miami every December. We had KC this past year and Cincinnati the year before. Few defenses are stopping these teams at all, and fewer with any consistency.

This defense right now is good enough to drag an average offense to 9 wins. It would hold up pretty well with a good to great offense. That is the plan with Maye, right, to become a good to great offense in a few years.

They are still weak in the second level when it comes to coverage. Also, the secondary needs Gonzalez to stay on the field or else the secondary will be undersized. FS is a big question mark.

That's the test that we'll see when the offense gets better. However, key players on defense could depart by the time the offense catches up.

Buffalo is starting to trend downward. They struggle against Miami due to their lack of team speed. Cincinnati bullied them and took their foot off the gas in the second half. I guarantee you this was a game Bill knew he had to get bigger at CB with the Bengals WR's jumping over the Pats CB's all day. KC bullied them with a weak supporting cast.

The secondary is their strength. Peppers, gonzo, dugger, j. Jones are a great players. Gonoz had a torn labrum Made on a tackle.. injuries are part of the game.. we went to a superbowl with ty law out. FS absolutely agree on. That position like LT on offense needs to be defined. The offense will be leaps and bounds better this season. Pretty much the whole offense has been revamped. Even if they struggle out the gate I have more faith they will be a better all around offense than the past few seasons. We have Austin, dial, Wade, Wilson who are all 6ft CBs.. my bet is Austin is the guy opposite Gonzo.

M.jones is not an outside CB he's a slot CB/all pro returner. The defense also has a dominant front in Barmore, judon, Jennings, Bentley, white who set the edge with the best of them. This season I can guarantee you there will be some pro bowlers on defense. The key is getting some on offense!

Ceiling is a playoff team. Floor is the #1 overall pick next April. So many questions to be answered.

Agreed. Although Buffalo lost a huge piece of thier offense in diggs.. I really believe having diggs helped make Allen so much better.

Personally I feel our defense can play with any offense in the NFL. By saying this meaning I don't not see a team just doing whatever they want.

I do not believe in ceilings.

The Rams were nothing until Green went down.

The Patriots were less than nothing until Bledsoe went down.

In any of the four major sports, a combination of solid coaching, determined, capable players and leadership can take a team to the top quickly. It's been this way for a long time now.

I agree on the secondary and on the overall quality of the defense. My only concern on that side of the ball arises out of my sense that it's going to take a couple of years in my judgment to rebuild this dismal offense, particularly at wide receiver and O-line, but there are other positions on offense that do not look good from a long-term perspective, TE for example. I like Hunter Henry, but what will he be by the time the rest of the offense is ready to roll? This parallels my concern re the defense. If the time frame is a couple of years, what will be the state of the defense at that time? I do not at all think this is any sort of crisis, but as the offense is rebuilt, it will require some vigilance to make sure that the defense is still strong when the O is ready to accomplish something in the playoffs.

Well 90% of the problem was the QB position. We've revamped basically all the skill positions, with the most important Being QB. also the offense we were running last season didn't help either. Under AVP expect zone runs, deep shots down the field.. O lineman all blocking to one side on zone runs.. alot of what the Browns and 49ers to name a few do. The defense we know will bring it each game we just need the offense to be "marginal".
