There's No Way Schuster Makes This Team.

JuJu wouldn't have even been %60 when we signed him. Obviously we should have been more concerned about the injury but if the medical staff told him he would only be %60 for the 2023 season then you'd have a story. This story is all hindsight.
That's right in his own admission said he played hurt in the superbowl when with KC. I believe his performance in the super raised his stock.. it's kind if felt like the amendola situation when Wes left..

Did you enjoy how a disciplined team that knows accountability was able to rebound and win its 6th Super Bowl the following season?
Gilly, J. Jones, McCourty bros. Hightower, van noy...

I did. Should have been the only threepeat in the Super Bowl era but well....

He gave up six touchdowns in his coverage, tying for third-most at the position, while also yielding the 11th-most yards at 698 and ranking 108th in yards after the catch at 233. He sucked in 2017.

He also had the gall to go out and blame the coaching staff because he let Jay Cutler and a 5'7" sixth round pick WR destroy him.

Incompetence would have been reason enough to bench Butler. Screwing over his teammates the week leading up to the biggest game of the year was the nail in the coffin.

Also the player that replaced him Eric Rowe went on to have a nice little career and was a better player than Butler going forward.

Facts suck for you.
if he played so badly, why did he play 97% of the defensive snaps all the way thru the AFCCCG?

Rowe was a better player then and going forward. The only reason Butler wasn’t benched sooner was Rowe was hurt. Butler sucked in 2017, the Titans paid him then benched him. He peaked in 2016.
He wasn't. He was rated as one of the worst CB's in the NFL in 2017. In fact, the Philly media put it out there during Super Bowl week that the Eagles were going to target him if they saw him on the field. We know what happened early in the game with Rowe allowing 10 points on the first two drives alone.

With or without Butler, the Pats had no business allowing 40+ points to Nick Foles and losing to the Eagles.

Especially after the goat dropping 505 on the "vaunted eagles wide 9 defense "...

I would have gladly swapped those Super Bowls. Letting Philly win their 1st is an inexcusable sin.

I really just flat out dislike Juju. I didn't like him before he got here and I just hate him now. His little "quirky" act, his Tick Tock crap, now the excuses about the knee. Just go away please. I don't care about the cap hit just cut him.

Bolden was pretty good in training camp before being concussed. Sticking with my binky to make huge strides. Think he makes an impact at 2. Coached up by Dion and has all the measurables you want. 4.3 speed, 6’2 205 38 vert, Mold him into that guy you want. Don’t sleep on him.
So, we we have the choice of excellent corners opposite Gonzo in Austin and Bolden?

Austin is probably the likely guy. If he continues his growth as a player, and continues to play well in camp. We seem to have a deep CB group just young and unproven.

Juju honestly isn't a bad guy. I just believe he's still got the kid in him. However to your point. He was signed hurt, he said himself he played at 60%.. is that why he dropped passes? .. but I believe that the other guys are hungry especially polk and baker.. Juju likely will be an injury settlement candidate wich I'm pretty much hoping for at this point. Just don't see how he's " better " from a knee issue.

The issue is whether we have a deep CB group or solid backups.

Obviously we are deep in the sense that we have a lot of bodies competing to play opposite GONZO.

Well I will say this Wade, Austin specifically have gotten some experience. Austin is a 2nd year player and Wade I think is a 4 yr veteran? They both just need to build off last season they have big roles carved out for themselves. I just believe Austin is the guy of all the young CBs with the most upside. He's 6'1, rangy, physical, great instincts ball skills and he plays with that 7 round chip on his shoulder. Dial, Bolden also will have thier opportunities.

yes. the team has numbers in summer camp.
I am very high on Gonzo and believe Jon Jones if healthy is a border line pro bowl player. Marcus imo is too small to play the majority of the snaps at the 3rd CB spot.
the team lost Jackson, Bryant and Mills from last seasons team. Jack Jones too. when everyone was healthy and available, Wade was behind all of them. Austin showed some promise, but he was a street free agent the entire season.
another veteran is needed

The Patriots currently list Marcus Jones as slightly bigger than "border line pro bowl player" Jon Jones (188-185), so I'm not sure why you keep saying he's too small. He's not too small to cover Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle... he's just right.

JC Jackson wasn't playing particularly well when he was here, he wasn't the same confident player he was when he left... so he's not a huge loss.

Also not sure where you're getting your Shaun Wade take from, he played a lot in the first month, he started six games on the season. He hurt his shoulder midseason and missed some time, missed one game in week 11 to covid... but when he came back healthy he played quite a bit and played really well to end the season. Last season was the first season I can remember him playing at all and first I remember saying something positive about Wade. They played him all over as well, some free safety included. He was good, it surprised me as I had written him off.

I won't slam Myles Bryant on the way out the door, let's just say I wish him well elsewhere and always have.

Jack Jones sucked terribly, beyond the airplane and guns he got toasted on the field. Crappy play and a loud mouth will get you booted out the door... good riddance. He's someone else's problem now.

Mills is the only person who might be missed, I also think they can replace him with another CB at FS.

The player you're forgetting or omitting is the second most athletically gifted CB on the team after Gonzo. Marco Wilson is a ridiculous athlete and has been starting the last three years for a dog in Arizona. They didn't acquire him until two weeks left in the season so we barely saw him. I expect him to start opposite Gonzo or somewhere this season. He is finally on a great defense and should be able to show his worth. He is better than any single DB they lost.

Marcus Dial is a fast tall strong border CB who uses the sideline extremely well based off college tape. He doesn't have ridiculous agility, but it didn't seem to bother him at South Carolina. He ranked #3 in passes defensed two years in a row in the SEC, he played a lot of football and started a lot of games.

Two players who provide some potential excitement is Isaiah Bolden, and the other is UDFA from this offseason Azizi Hearn. Both of these guys are roughly 210 pounds, they're big. Bolden has pure speed and was a dynamic kick returner in college. He even looked pretty decent at CB until he went down with injury.

Hearn had very good measurables across the board, he was big at 6'1" 206 pounds, he had very good speed (4.48 forty), strong (18 reps), explosive (37.5" vert/127" broad) and his agility was exceptional for a guy his size with a 4.23 shuttle and 6.92 cone. He had a long circuitous route through college but settled at UCLA and defended a lot of passes last season. His best football might be ahead of him.

Even guys like Alex Austin and Kaleb Ford Dement has some tools to work with.

In short, they lost some more experienced veteran guys, got a lot younger but they also let a lot of really ordinary players walk and got a lot more athletic. I don't see the big need... here's my projected depth chart with all the garbage removed:

FS – Shaun Wade, Marcellas Dial,
BIG CB – Christian Gonzalez, Marco Wilson, Isaiah Bolden, Azizi Hearn, Alex Austin (PS),
SLOT CB – Jonathan Jones, Marcus Jones, Kaleb Ford-Dement (PS),

That's a great mix of talent and some vets mixed in, better than last year's depth chart. The defensive front just has to do their job.

Wade would be the veteran. Issue is he's played sparingly, and has had various injuries or DNPs since we traded for him. He finally stayed healthy and showed his ability. He played well down the stretch last season along with Alex Austin. I just believe all the DBs will be competing for a starting role opposite gonzo and the back up, depth positions.
