DRAFT 2024 2nd Round Pick - WR Ja'Lynn Polk

That's great, if you have Pat Mahomes or Tom Brady at QB.

Recent history says otherwise. The Eagles won it without a true #1, the Rams had one in Kupp, the Bronco’s won it without one, and Manning was the worst QB in football at that point, the Ravens won it without one,,the Giants won it without one, the SeaHawks won it without one. And Randy Moss, Larry Fitzgerald, Calvin Johnson, Deandre Hopkins, Andre Johnson, Julio Jones and other true #1’s never won a ring in all of their combined careers.

Again, I’m not saying I don’t want them to get a true #1, I would love to see them get one, and I think it would help Maye succeed. I’m just saying you don’t have to have one to succeed, but you do still need a good receiving unit, But you will be screwed if you can’t protect your QB, regardless of how good your WR’s are.

One of the coaches here now was on staff last year at Washington, so familiarity is no doubt a big factor. I am good with Polk, wanted Mitchell too, but I am willing to let the guy play at least a couple pre-season games before I start flipping tables over and saying how much this regime sucks because they took guys that play positions desperately needing to be filled.

Not familiar with Mitchell's issues. anyone have a link?

I wanted Mitchell as well, but what I heard was on a podcast, and it wasn’t that he is “ nuts,” but it was that he was basically disinterested when he was meeting teams. Anyone can read into that anything they want because it’s impossible know if it’s true, or if it even mattered? What does matter, however, is how much he cares about football, and more important, how much is he willing to do to win. It won’t matter how talented he is if he really doesn’t care, it doesn’t want to be there.

What sold me on Polk was watching the clips of him playing, as well as his comments. He gives a **** about playing hard and wanting to win, and it shows in the way he plays. And it wasn’t huge explosive plays, but it was the way he attacked the ball, and made really tough catch after really tough catch, and they were coming from Penix, who throws a really hard ball.

The same goes for Baker, go watch the tape on him, and the way he uses his body to win contested balls, as well as the way he continually worked back to his QB to bail him out of trouble, And the important thing for me with both of these guys is how and where they are making these catches. They aren’t hauling in deep ball after deep ball in foot races, it’s mostly in the intermediate areas of the field, where you have pick up most of your third down conversions.

I think Polk and Baker will end up with Douglas as their starting receivers, and Bourne and Osborne will be the depth. I’m not sure JuJu and Thornton will even make this team, especially since neither play special teams. IMO this was a great job by Wolf in getting exactly the kinds of receivers that will make Maye successful, ones that can reliably make difficult catches that move the chains consistently. If they can add a # 1 to that mix, either by trade or draft in the next year their WR corps will be in great shape. It’s already in much better condition than it was. I really liked the Polk pick, but adding Baker later on was what made me feel much better about the unit as a whole.

Gimme a blue chip OT and take a diff qb rd 2.

This was stupid.

With any luck, our OL is bad enough that we don't win more than 5 games next year, and Wolf can try again next year with a new set of top-5 picks.

O, we'll need another qb next year, whoever plays behind this OL is going to be ruined.

Carr, comes to mind. The older one who got shell shocked.

Does a single blue chip OT make our line servicable enough to account for a diff QB? I think even a great OL looks worse with a less capable QB. And they are moot if positional players are meager as well.

However, it goes both ways. But, my question still stands - functionally, I'd feel less confident if we didn't have a QB in place (and I'm not saying I'm flying with optimism). Now, if I know we have that great QB? It's way easier to feel confident burning cash and draft capital on the team around him.

Mina Kimes says his comp is Jakobi Myers.
Good god
Ok good point. Seeing him play a decent amount, I’d say he’s like myers as a rookie when myers was in his second/third year? So personally I see Polk definitely ahead myers coming into the league. But it’s all about effort when you get there,

Maybe the Mitchell stuff is overblown but with a rookie quarterback and rookie head coach building a solid locker room and fostering a team culture is more important than ever so I am happy we passed on him the more I read about his personality.

One pre-draft report cited that Mitchell, a Type 1 diabetic, didn’t manage his condition well and that could be the cause of friction. “When his blood sugar’s off, he’s rude, he’s abrasive, he doesn’t pay attention in meetings. It’s why you get really, really ****ty character reports coming out of Georgia and Texas. But when his stuff is normal, and they get him normal by lunch time, he’s out at practice high energy, best practice player, loves football.”

Seems like an odd reason to turn into a dipshit. Even if that whole thing is legit then be an adult and manage your condition better.

Quite common.... Wouldn't be hard at all to nip that in the bud in the NFL. Speaks more that the program couldn't figure it out lmao (imo).

If this is Elliot wolf weaponizing the offense I’m not impressed.
Polk and Baker both have excellent body control and good catch radius for WR's. You're going to be happy oh Maye is going to be very happy.

Comment from Reiss this morning:

3. Blocked by Bills: The Patriots had a trade offer on the table to the Bills late in the first round on Thursday night, according to a source. The Bills were at pick 32, but instead of dealing with their AFC East rival Patriots for pick 34, they chose Carolina's offer to slide back one spot to 33.

Receivers Xavier Legette and Keon Coleman were selected at 32 and 33 before the Patriots traded back from 34, so one can deduce the Patriots had either Legette or Coleman as their target -- or possibly both. My hunch is Legette.

If they were trying to trade up, I don't think it was for Polk. Legette would have added more speed, not sure he's a better receiver though.

I can't believe that Florida WR Ricky Prearsall went before both of them the 49ers must know something interesting.

arch: Polk and Baker are our George Pickens both players attack the football both are going to be loved here. Don't be fooled by their 40 times they play faster than their timed speed.
Everyone's saying they're not burners who make contested catches. They said that about Harry and whatshisname we got from Miami who was always hurt. That doesn't instill me with a lot of confidence.

Beacon had Polk in his Second Tier 1B in the Draft forum from Day 1 that's good enough for me. One WR that left on impression on me after watching tape is Javon Baker his play is impressive.

On Tape Harry couldn't separate only BB couldnt see that Polk and Baker runs away from people Harry Never did that.

He doesn’t remind me of Meyers at all, he reminds me more of Troy Brown. He plays big, has great hands, goes after the ball aggressively, and makes all the really tough catches.

I get it..however, it’s about a player’s mindset on & off the field. Not everything is about quantifiable things such as speed, 40 times & measurables. Mindset is key. These two receivers have the “want to” instilled in them, which shows on tape. They’re highly aggressive/passionate, talented players who attack the football & will let you know about it. Harry did not have IT. He was very passive & uninspiring as a player and it showed. Baker & Polk are the complete opposite, while also being better players. You’ll see..
