Mayo's Coaching Staff [Discuss Coaching Candidates Here!]

From Bedards chat:

If you ask the people who have worked with him (Mayo) privately, most of them will tell you he's not ready for this and has no idea what he's in for.

Apparently this is why everyone is trying to jump ship. This is going to make the Pete Carroll years seem like glory days. Promoting Mayo without talking to Vrabel is an unforgivable mistake by the Krafts, who should just sell the team at this point.

Maybe Thunder Cat will come to his senses when he sees an empty stadium every Sunday.

What an absolute jump in logic by you. Do you think Douche and Squeaky's gimp actually polled everyone that has worked with Mayo? It's another hyperbolic comment by Bedard which is his forte. If he says "I don't think Mayo is ready" people just brush it off but when he adds in the "ask people that worked with them they'll tell you" people like you buy it as fact. You're naive if you think Bedard actually asked people that worked with Mayo.

This is the same idiot that killed Tavai as being a terrible player, yet he's been 1 of the best LBers since coming to NE which who was his poistion coach....oh right... Jerod Mayo. Mayo got a supposed terrible player to be one of the better LBers in the league, maybe he has an idea of what he is doing as a coach.

I have high hopes for Mayo, and I absolutely despise Bedard. But this is certainly a concern.

Some of the stuff he said at the PC didn't give confidence. And then saying we wanted to draft a QB with the #3 seemed, well, weird.

I hope he lives up to his reputation as a football strategist.

Who are these little dogs/minions you’re referring to? Anyone that leaves? I don’t think either of you know what the hell is going on in the coaching dept. I know I don’t.
Achord, Judge, Pellegrino, Brian B, Steve B all those guys will be either on the Patriots coaching staff or on Bill coaching staff.

Where is this coming from?

Curious why Stevie B called the plays if Mayo is the strategist savant.

is any first year coach really ready? I mean was vrabel ready before he was? people will say "well guys like McDaniels had higher positions"

but Bill never named a DC. so for all we know Mayo and Steve were the defacto DC's.

thats not an indicator Mayo will be successful. but having no head coaching experience doesnt mean he will be a bad head coach like many are extrapolating.

I’d love to see Cortez Hankton brought in to coach wr’s for this team. Especially if they draft Daniels as he also served as the passing game coordinator for LSU and Georgia.

Bedard's a blowhard, people I've talked to say he's an ignorant ass.

I am intrigued by the storyline of Caley.

He was a Patriots coach from 2015 to 2022. He was apparently thought highly enough of by Bill that Bill blocked him from leaving with Josh to Vegas, and it seems like Bill wanted Caley’s help running the offense in 2022. However, Caley didn’t play games and said he wanted a better title than TE Coach if he was running the offense. Bill said no way pal and brought in Matt Patricia and Joe Judge.

Then in 2023 when they interviewed OC candidates for a “real” OC, obviously they hired BOB, but they also interviewed Caley. I was sort of surprised by that at the time considering the turmoil with him previously. When he didn’t get the OC job, he didn’t even stay on staff - he left for the Rams for the same role (TE coach). His choice, or did Bill not offer him his old job back at all?

Now he’s interviewing here again. Since Mayo was involved in OC interviews last year with Bill, I wonder if perhaps he wanted them to give Caley a shot and felt he was done wrong?

The whole thing is sort of strange to me. It seems like Caley has a good rep around the league? Not sure what to make of it besides the fact that Bill didn’t like him at the end because he didn’t fall in line.

So. More of the same tree.

I'm starting to wonder why we fired Bill.

I wouldn't say more of the same, Bill didn't give him the OC job and he's thought highly of around the league. You have to figure some of the guys from Bill's staff might still be here but probably in different jobs.

I'm optimistic because we are at least trying new things but I thought the narrative was Bob was. Kraft hire. If this is true then it's not really Bill not giving him the job as much as being told he couldn't.

It doesn't quite matter anyway because unless they seriously invest in the offense it won't matter who's coaching them.

Baby steps.

There is probably value in Caley’s year in LA. Exposure to new ideas and concepts in the McVay scheme. He would theoretically be able to come back to NE and implement a scheme that pulls from NE historical concepts and newer concepts at the same time, but also be able to make it easy on players who have been here a while to understand what he wants to do since he’s familiar with what they know now.

Essentially Caley has had a year to observe first-hand the difference between what NE did for years and what LA is doing, and determine what he thinks the important differences are, and make an offense out of it. Would it work? I don’t know but I can see the logic behind talking to him about it.

Mayo was part of his interview last year so have to assume he liked him then.

I'd be happy with Caley. I don't think he'd necessarily be the best possible OC we could find, but it all makes sense.
And, you know Caley would be super motivated to prove what he can do, especially with BB out of the way.
And, it stands to reason that Mayo is going to give the OC a ton of autonomy, not lording over the gameplans and vetoing schemes like he did with Matty P and BOB - who couldn't escape fast enough that he took a college OC job!
