Hiring Mayo is dumb, Bill himself was maybe 10% of the problem the other 90% was the people employed by Bill all across the organization who weren't up to the job and many of them will hang around with Mayo as head coach as he doesn't have any clear non Patriots ties across the NFL.

That's a huge % of the roster. Most of them starters on defense. A handful of key players on offense (Andrews, for example.)

Vrabel has outside ties, he could bring Arthur Smith as his OC which is a completely different offense.

Mayo is just 100% a Bill guy, it's removing the face of the problem without actually removing the problem.

Not necessarily. If people believe Bill’s GM performance was the biggest problem, having an actual GM will help. If Curran is right and Eliot Wolf is the GM, he has a lot of outside experience and ties as well as his Pats experience.

And I wouldn’t want any changes on the defensive coaching side, that’s been working well as is. Empowering BoB or McDaniels to have control over the offense isn’t a bad thing either - they have had success outside of Brady, Josh just stinks at being HC.

I would accept that in any combination with Josh as OC.

The problem with McDaniels going with Bill is that Bill only has a couple of years left and then McDaniels may be out of a job again. Now, MAYBE if that team is really successful, it could be a promotion opportunity for him but that seems like a slim chance.

Conversely if he were to come to NE, he would likely be able to count on a number of years of stable employment as an OC in the region he's happiest in and with an owner that already loves him, and a fanbase that isn't hostile to him.

I could see either happening but there are potential pros and cons either way.

It would make zero sense to hire mayo. This is a team with a good defense but a lot of deficiencies on offense. It would make zero sense to hire a defensive coach here. Ben Johnson would make a lot of sense if they want someone younger

Josh would be foolish to follow BB he has a great history here as a OC stay with the younger guys Josh.

A Mayo hire basically says "we think the culture and the coaching structure is pretty good, but the drafting has been bad."

An outside hire is resetting the culture and coaching program, big changes.

A Vrabel hire is similar to a Mayo hire but with a little bit more change involved and a high "floor" as far as expected level of success.

The perception is Mayo is a BB disciple but BB never gave Mayo any direct credit maybe feeling the Krafts really like him as his successor.

I don't think they'll name a new HC today. If BB is showing up, it's not likely to be a new announcement.
In fact it's so out of the norm for the "departing" coach to show up to the owner announcement that he's gone.

I wouldn’t necessarily categorize it that way though. Kraft could be concerned about Belichick not empowering his coaches (the Herald article). Same coaches but different structure - more delegating and the coordinators being in charge of different things. Mayo could be for that, for all we know. Vrabel has HC experience and outside contacts which Mayo doesn’t have. Personally I would lean Vrabel ( really Harbaugh is my first choice though - he has a real track record, recognizing it would be a huge culture shock), but I’d understand a Mayo hire and hope the lack of experience doesn’t come back to bite.
