Tom Curran: Sources made 'clear to me' decision to move on from Belichick made after Germany game

Phat Matt, Judge and Josh McD both tried the hardo BB approach and failed. What makes you think Mayo will do something different or try the same approach?
Mayo was a player, not an ass kissing coach. Do you honestly believe Matt or Joe would have been on another organizations staff for so long if not for Bill? Players mentality is totally different . than a coach or staffer. Of course Mayo will use coaching methods and coaching points he played for the GOAT HC and he's been part of the organization not just Bill personally. If Kraft feels he's Bill's successor than he's probably the guy for the job. Mayo isn't going to just turn down other coaching opportunities to remain here as an Defensive assistant for nothing.

Again what did that All Pro roster do before and after?
That loaded roster is currently 6-7 and was 7-9 before he got there.

Good question, maybe because what he did for years worked and he's set in his ways, not sure but I'm not against Mayo being HC.
Mayo IMO would probably provide something different, he'd be endearing with the media, he's a guy that can command a locker room, get guys to buy in, he's a guy that I feel comfortable in. Mayo is a very savy, intelligent guy he isn't going to turn away opportunities elsewhere to remain here for nothing.

it feels like Mediocrity.
I am not advocating for Mayo but with no big name coaches on the horizon and knowing Kraft and his emphasis on loyalty, i think that is the direction we are headed for.

Good news is maybe they could bring Ziegler or Riddick or “fill in the blank with your favorite GM candidate” in as a competent GM

Those Spanish channels have it right, hire the hottest girl to tell you the weather, they're going to be as accurate as anyone else.
Who cares about the weather and the news. Just give us a flash of flesh every now and then.

I agree that all franchises have gone up in value, but the Patriots went from one of the lower valued franchises to 2nd behind the Cowboys.
Yes but I don't think that is all because of winning. That's my only point.

Look at the top 7 in 2023 valuation. 4 of which haven't won a SB since Kraft bought the team. Seems more about the size of the market than actually winning.
  • Dallas Cowboys - $9.2 billion
  • Los Angeles Rams - $6.94 billion
  • New England Patriots - $6.7 billion
  • San Francisco 49ers - $6.15 billion
  • New York Jets - $6.11 billion
  • Washington Commanders - $6.05 billion
  • Chicago Bears - $6 billion

I'm suddenly depressed.

Actually, I often have similar thoughts. But then I recall recent seasons when those laments recede come playoff time and vestiges of the "old-school" game we know and love, return. With more at stake things get more serious, intensity ramps up and officiating becomes more lenient. I wouldn't throw in the towel just yet. It's still football; at least, until they put flags or two-hand touch sensors on the quarterback.

Honestly it's one of the other for me. Just go full tilt either way. So much of this **** was predicted on player safety, which they've proven time and time again they don't actually care about. The mere existence of the NFL and tackle football is antithetical to safety lmao.

If it's all about safety, then go full tilt flag and let that develop into whatever it will. If you want to keep the brutality, then ease up and stop giving this ******** excuse of safety. The NFL, in the end, just wants have both, and the results are stupid.

It's not about player safety. It's about player liability and lawsuits. The player's safety stuff is just smokescreen for "we don't want to get sued out of existence".

Kraft bought the Patriots for 180 million, now they are worth 7 billion. Winning is what made them the all that money. Belichick and Brady had everything to do with that.
Most of that appreciation in value is not attributable to Brady or Belichick. Gillette Stadium was already under construction before Bill was hired. The biggest part of the appreciation is the growth of the partnership known as the NFL. Every franchise, even the worst run and perennial losers, have appreciated in value many times their 1994 value.

Even the habitual losing teams in the NFL have seen their valuations increase by 15X since 1994.

No question winning helped but it wasn't the only reason the NEP went from 172m to 7b
15x of 172 milly is only 2.5 billys. That’s 4.5 extra billys from Bill’s winning.

Again what did that All Pro roster do before and after?
Not much because coaching matters. Brady learned that when Arians left. Winston also threw as many INTs and TDs. Hard to overcome that.

Translation: "He used to be a good journalist when he said good things about the team. Now he is a bad journalist because he says bad things bout the team."

not at all.......the quality of his pieces, the quality of his tweets, his integrity as a "journalist" have all tanked......

you don't see any real insight out of him, you don't see any real football takes, it's all reality show drama ********

Ive been on here all year saying that QB is the most important position in football. It makes a huge difference. I'm a huge Brady fan, he made a huge difference!

But you still need a team.

You can have an All-Pro roster, but if you're lead by 2 backups, it's not going to work.

Now Baker Mayfield is bad, but you should also notice that 6 of the Bucs I listed are gone from the team.

Think of it this way: the Rams added Stafford and a bunch of other All-Pros and they won a Super Bowl. Then those All-Pros left and Stafford stayed, so they suffered. Actually, between last's year bye week and this year's when Stafford went out, they went 5-15.

CURRAN: Decision Was Made on Belichick Following Patriots Loss in Germany
Ian Logue
Coming off of Thursday night's win over Pittsburgh and some of the renewed optimism thanks to a nice performance by Bailey Zappe, the talk of moving on from Bill Belichick had quieted down in recent days.

Is Bill Belichick the right guy to lead us through that offseason into 2024 and beyond?

And that's exactly the right question to be asking when you're making that kind of decision. His track record is in the past not the future.

It's just time. All good things end eventually. He can't be here forever.

If he really wants that record maybe he'll get it elsewhere. I still think he will retire and then the Patriots can honor him at some point like they did for the GOAT.

karen has gone the same way, volin has always been there......boston radio has always followed this model, at least in the recent past.....the rest have followed suit

even bob ryan back in the day, hell, even shank, made attempts to be actual journalists, although I think X's & O's have been discussed much more now than in the past.....

this forum provides way more actual football insight, more Xs & Os discussion, than 95% of the current batch of boston sports "journalists"

My thinking is.. RK wants Mayo to run the team and Groh or Zeigler or wolf to make the signings. More of what the NFL is. Not one guy doing the same job. Bill even Said himself it's impossible for 1 person to do both jobs.

In fairness to them, they're all battling to stay afloat in a world where insightful X's and O's articles don't garner the same attention, and pageviews, and such are becoming more and more difficult to come by.

Without people reading, nobody can survive. So it's a fine line they're all trying to walk where opinion pieces outperform intelligent posts significantly. I can speak for that here based on the data I've seen. Just a bad time all around and they're all trying to keep their collective heads above water.

The only exception is Reiss, but he's also under the umbrella of the World Wide leader so he's safer than most in that regard. That and he's since started holding significant bits of information for his Sunday column, which also now makes it a must-read.

15x is for historically crappy teams which is why I called them out separately. Pats are 40x
