There were people in this very forum who that honestly believed the Pats were better off sacrificing a ring and trading Brady if it meant keeping Garopollo.

That's how much they bought into the myth that Belichick can win with anyone. They honestly thought that they could plug in any QB and "continue the dynasty", therefore they were better off moving on Brady earlier.

No. They would have been better off sacrificing future salary cap, kept Brady and gave him as many weapons as possible to maximize the runs at a Championship with him. Then they would have picked up another ring here with him.

Okay, if we're picking a little at BB.... and I think it might be warranted at this point.

Early on, he got lucky he got Brady. Bledsoe may not have been a HoFer, but he was certainly above average....but he played out the exact scenario he did in Cleveland. He didn't like Kosar, and wanted his guy in charge. He cut Kosar, to go with Testaverde (eventually... Testaverde was injured, so they went with Todd Philcox).

He didn't like Bledsoe, either. But there was no guarantee Brady was going to be Brady. Unlike what he was willing to do with Tom over the years, he wasn't willing to do with Drew. That is, work with the skills Drew had. With Tom, he ran tons of different offenses that suited his developing skills. I look at the 07 offense with the downfield passing attack and think...well, at that point, Drew could have run that.

But, hey, I fully admit to bias. I just think he got lucky Tom was Tom.

I guess that we just expected that the management is so good that we can go from Cam to the Super Bowl in 3 or 4 years. Being competitive for the playoffs in EVERY YEAR since Brady left was simply NOT enough.

Personally, I think that we greatly underestimate the effect of the 2022 coaching changes and Belichick's unwillingness to lead and make changes during 2022.

I used to think Tomlin was a clown, he's not and clearly the Steelers know how to retool a roster after their HoF QB retires.

I figured this year was going to be redemption, and I am truly shocked. I just can't believe that Bill all of a sudden became an idiot, or stopped caring. Just doesn't seem like it's in his DNA. In fairness Jimmy looked incredible in the limited time he played and there was no reason to think he was so injury prone. I wanted the Patriots to figure out a way to bridge between Brady and JG.

Me too. It is amazing to think that Brady actually outplayed JGs window. Bill was right to draft Jimmy when Brady was 37 and it was all lined up until Brady starting winning SBs every other year from age 37-43. It really was a remarkable time. I really don't blame anyone during that time except for Bill not trading Jimmy sooner to get better value for him in 2017.

They clearly don't have the guy yet at QB but their roster is plenty good enough to have them a game out of the division half way through the season.

I think most on this board greatly overestimate the impact of coaching in general.

More accurately, his unwillingness to get his head out of his ass since around 2017.

Hear hear on the impact of coaching. I wonder if coaching is something that's being pushed by the league and the media even though there's a mound of evidence that shows that it's the players that count toward winning. And since Bill is doing the drafting and he blows at that, here we are.

Pitt is a good example of what can happen when you draft well. Baltimore is another. Triplin and Harbawl have coached for 33 years and only have 2 losing seasons. And neither of them had Tom Brady for 20 years.
