This is different than Spygate, this is premeditated cheating.
The only difference between this and spygate is the Wolverines were doing it in advance whereas the Patriots were doing it in game.

I don't know what you mean when you say Spygate wasn't premediated. It isn't like the Patriots camera guy thought up the idea on the spot.

You either are OK with this type of gamesmanship or you’re not. Drawing a distinction between how it was performed makes no sense to me.

Personally, I don’t have an issue with it. Change your signals if it’s a concern. Certainly many other programs are engaging in similar in an attempt to gain a competitive advantage.
I think it is ridiculous that you can be accused of "spying" on a guy standing in a stadium in full view of 100,000 people during a game being televised nationally. Both this and "spygate" are absurd but the Wolverines, much like the Patriots, will get a disproportionate amount of attention because they are national powers.

Yahoo sports is reporting they "scouted" Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia.

The "they should have scouted TCU" jokes are just writing themselves.

It's against college rules.

It was NOT against NFL rules at the time.

I haven't been paying attention ....is any of this actually against NCAA rules?

This is different than Spygate, this is premeditated cheating. This is way worse than spygate was. Besides I hate any Harbaugh and I'm watching with glee while he gets his comeuppance. I'm going to post anything I can find about this Michigan mischief. Sweat it out Harbaugh, sweat it out.

helll yeah

He wasnt winning no NCAA Championship anyhow.

That means that Mr Jimmy is in contention for an NFL job. The Bills job could be wide open with McDermott failing to get the job done.

It is amazing how ignorant our own fanbase is about Spygate. It is even more than "not being against the rules." What the Pats did was explicitly made legal in the rules. They just did it from a location that was a few dozen yards away from where the league said was OK, according the the league's interpretation of the language, which was ambiguous.

The real element that Bill thought he was secure on was that the rule prohibited recording "for use during the game". The recording was being archived for later analysis. If the NYJFL could write a rule that said what they intended or could interpret a rule according to its plain text rather than "you should have known what we meant" there would have been no issue.

What’s funny is in the NFL literally none of this is against any rules. The reason why the NCAA has it strictly banned is because it gives big schools with endless cash an advantage because only they can afford huge advance scouting campaigns and operations for every game every week across the country.

So basically Michigan is very screwed. Because unlike in the NFL its objectively not a level playing field to just scout like this.

Yes that's exactly why it's been illegal for decades. Also the NCAA bylaws says the head coach of the football team is responsible for everything that happens with the football program, which is not true in the NFL. So Harbaugh especially might be screwed since this isn't his first rodeo with NCAA violations.

The only thing that might save them is if it can be proven that this Stalions guy acted on his own without anyone in the football ops knowing. The volume of tickets he bought to different games probably says otherwise and it's not good.

Also yeah stealing signs is technically not against NCAA rules. They should probably get with the times and do what the NFL does with the helmet radios and there won't be a problem.

Radio helmets cost a ton of money for the whole system and the NCAA ain’t paying for 130 teams to get one. And so the same rich vs poor school thing comes into play here too.

I find it absurd that this is against ncaa rules and is even considered cheating. It is exactly what it sounds like, advanced scouting. If a team has hand signs available for the whole world to see and the other team can see it as well, who cares? If you dont like it, find a different way to call your plays or change your hand signals up. I’m not a Harbaugh fan in anyway. Hate both of the brothers but give me a break here with the reactions by fans and the media.

Felgah and Mazzhole were solidly for Harbaugh coming to the Patriots.
Yeah ... what idiots ... we already have the smear of SpyGate .... SMH.

Yes, exactly. It’s how the rule is written. The underlying behavior is fundamentally the same. One should determine how they feel about this type of thing based on the action itself, not the legislation regarding the action.

I’ve already said I don’t have much of an issue with it. Didn’t when the Pats did it. Don’t with Michigan. To quote BB, it’s part of the “mosaic” for preparing to play a team competitively. It’s not the end-all-be-all and it’s certainly not an “auto-win” card. Players have to execute, throw accurate passes, catch the ball, block, so forth. It’s a small piece of the puzzle, and certainly could be helpful/beneficial, but, again, not the end-all-be-all.

I would HOPE - though I understand that in these decadent times it is likely to be a vain hope - that one could expect the ethical standards in college sports to be be higher than those in the pros. College athletics does, after all, claim to "build character." We know very well that this is a crock of ****, of course, but until now they have at least bothered to keep up appearances.
