“The drafts have improved”

This thread is the “nothing like price to change sentiment” of football. These drafts are fine. A lot of guys are injured and that sucks. Mac had to be taken that year. If we’re winning the opposite thread gets made.

Agree to an extent. Better injury luck and different circumstances make a lot of these picks look different. These different circumstances mostly go back to our disgrace of an OL. The Cole Strange pick looms large.

The drafts aren’t fine. In terms of Mac, I agree, we needed to take the shot. But we have a few decent players on D to show for those drafts and a bare cupboard on O.

What I was hoping for was a move up for Fields. Not that Fields has been tearing it up on a regular basis but it would be nice to have a guy who is an athlete with physical talent.
I wanted to tank and try to get Trevor Lawrence. Not saying this with hindsight either since I was saying it at the time as well. Could have tried to sell off assets like Gilmore, Mason, Tuney, Stidham, J.C. Jackson, etc, played the younger guys, done some self-scouting to see who you would want to keep, and improve the draft position since they obviously aren’t going to be as talented.

That said, it was never a consideration to tank. Belichick wouldn't even let Stidham start after the Patriots were eliminated from contention.

That 2020 season was such a missed opportunity to tear it down to the studs. Brady left, the opt outs, the Covid protocols and craziness around all that. Bill had a built in excuse to go full tank mode instead he paid a guard $14 million, held onto Gilmore when he could've gotten a 1/2 for him, and refused to play a lot of the young guys down the stretch.

Beating a dead horse. Bill the GM over the past few years is an abject failure. That's just an established fact. He must be fired. It doesn't matter to me how they manage this, but we must see to it that Bill has NO ROLE WHATEVER in GM responsibilities from this day forward. If Bill the HC insists that he will resign if Bill the GM is fired, then he - I say with some modest regret - must go as well.

Meanwhile, Mac must play out the season to firm up our sense of his limitations and potential. He is owed that chance because of how ill-treated he has been (by the GM, mostly). Do I expect he will show himself to be worth a long-term contract? No, I do not, but fair is fair. The pressing issue at present is making sure there is a competent GM in place for next preseason. Until then, we should not undertake any radical restructuring of the roster.

As for the season, it is essentially over. Because I think it is unethical and dishonors the game, I would not support deliberately tanking, but as the losses build up, which they will, I will feel free to be grateful for the effect each loss will have on our draft position.

NFL execs weighing in and ripping the Pats:

"Quite simply, they have no talent," From an AFC Executive.
"They look extremely low on talent, to be honest," an NFC coach added.

From another exec:
"The transition from Brady to where they are at now is such an indictment," one executive told The Athletic's Mike Sando. "Their best move is to bring in a young offensive coach with a new general manager and start fresh. You let the new offensive coach determine whether Mac can be saved. They need real change. They gotta get out of this."

For some reason the it won't let me add the link to Bleacher Report so I added it to the quotes.

Who is Tyquan Thornton?
A friend of mine who plays a lot of dynasty fantasy was excited when we drafted Harry and picked him up. This is the second or third time he took a flyer on a Pats rookie WR.

I told him he was wasting his pick as we are simply incapable of drafting WRs which I told him the previous couple times.

That was last time he tried to mess with our WRs. He even liked Thornton lol but learned his lesson.

I have been with my wife since 2013. Every year I would whine and moan about how horrible our draft was and she would tell me to shut up because every year I am wrong as we kept winning.

It's the same with this board; equating winning with good drafting or at least thinking we drafted well. It was really having an all time QB was a cheat code. Of course we hit on a few players that helped.

Last time we drafted a really good player? Thuney in 2016 or Mason in 2015. Last time we drafted a great player? Chandler Jones in 2012.

Belichick has always been a guy playing the averages and relying on us to be clutch or the opposing team to mess up. That extended to his drafting and accumulating draft picks and hoping some would work out.

Gonzo is promising but my god that 22 draft is starting to look gross. Cole Strange in the first round lmao... no name Tyquan with a fast 40 in the 2nd over actual producers. Marcus Jones an undersized corner that is a great returner is the one saving grace. Stevenson is good for a 4th rounder too.
Stevenson is prior draft 2021

I thought the same except for marcus and strong. Those actually seemed like good picks and I remember thinking why we waited until round 3 to make decent choices. Marcus still could be a good pick and we inexplicably gave up on strong very soon

Yeah trading Strong like he did was really mystifying, especially since JJ Taylor also wasn't retained... Not nearly enough speed in the offensive backfield now.

I was watching one of the sports shows and they said the last above average skill position player drafted by the Pats was James White in 2014.

Almost a decade since an above player drafted at the skill positions. That’s unacceptable.

This list does not help your argument at all and it's a losing battle for you. Bill has not drafted an impact Pro bowl/All Pro player on defense since Jamie Collins in 2013 and he was a two year wonder. That was 10 years ago. There are no foundational players on this team.

I suggest you watch other teams in the NFL that actually have talented players. The Pats don't have it. Former players are saying it. Analysts are saying it. Fans are saying it. There's only a very small minority that think the team has talent.
I started to do some research on the Pats last 5 drafts but it got depressing and I had to stop.

But you are talking about drafts from like 10 years ago to argue for bills philosophy

I'm talking about past 5-6 years.
Seymour was actually 20+ years ago and he's been retired for 10+, and to make it even funnier, he's one of the many all-time greats that Bill dumped early.

It's really astounding to see it all unfold right before our eyes the last few years though. The cupboard is completely bare.

Disagree

Agree

Of course it does... But we're not winning, so this thread is made in its stead... Because the guys Bill's been drafting Suck.

If the Pats were just losing it would be one thing, but this losing is bottom of the barrel level.

I was at the Dallas game. My first in person game and boy! They were putrid.

Bill the GM deserves all the brickbats that are coming hsi way and if not more.

Brady , Ernie , scar, McDaniels and draft gold dust in 2010s helped make bill the coach he is now. Last 5 years ... Not a single thing to be proud about .

Without the complimentart pieces around him , bill is not the GOAt coach anymore. I am thankful for bill, but sorry goodwill is over. We need bill to leave now. I think his priorities interfere with pats future and I don't think bill will take decisions in best interest of team. If so, he would have retired last season.
