Article writer thinks BOB would be a decent pick for Michigan State HC job, mentioned for one sentence in article on SI

Listen, BOB has been a successful college HC who did so while coaching at a highly disadvantaged situation at Penn St. So he is ALWAYS going to be mentioned when a high profile (or other) college HCing job opens up. But here's the thing. He not going anywhere. He is here in NE for a REASON and it's for more reasons than being and OC or even a potential future HC. He is HERE because of family reasons. He is here because THIS is home for both he and is wife. He is HERE because he is being very handsomely compensated. He's not going to leave this for but**** U to kiss alumni ass and chase 18 year olds in Ma's kitchen. He's got a great job doing what he likes the most. He's been an NFL HC and did a pretty good job IIRC.

I think for the next few years you can feel confident that BOB will be the OC here. Whether you will be happy that he's the OC is another question.

IMO he's probably been promised the big chair in New England when BB steps down.

If nothing else, everywhere he has gone Obie has made a two year obligation to that team. Just saying...
Kraft already stated in a book that he has BOB penciled in for NE HC when BB leaves.

Disagree with this, I think Mayo has been tagged by Kraft to replace Belichick, and that’s why he turned down HC interviews last offseason.

I think Mayo got some assurances. He canceled interviews for head coaching jobs and you don’t cancel those even if it is a job you don’t want because it gets your name out there for future jobs.

Depends on the annual salary and contract length.

I just read an article stating the top six candidates for the job and more to consider and BOB’s name wasn’t listed, I’m sure there will end up being several of these lists.

I freaking hope not

There is no way he does this to Mac or BB after less than a year. Especially for a crap job like MSU
Top 20 program in revenue and attendance.

I would rather say the constant grind in recruiting high school players would be the main turnoff. And dealing with all the flux in guys coming and going. It’s a different world from his Penn State days.

I don't think anybody has been promised anything beyond their current contracts... You gotta be nuts to think BB or the team would keep/hire a coach with that type of clause in their respective contracts... At the very least, in BoBs case, it would leave the team open for rooney rule sanctions...
While this might have recently changed, there is a specific clause in the Rooney rule that says it does not apply if a coach's or executive's contract promises them a promotion if a vacancy occurs.

Fake news. Won’t happen.

There's contracts, then there's verbal agreements.

It has nothing to do with anything except coaching experience.

Sounds like bs to me. I'm not sure that the team would miss him all that much anyway. Maybe they would and maybe they wouldn't. To me he's nothing special and wasn't when he was here before. But as with all coaches, they can't make chicken salad out of chicken sh!t. You give him Tom Brady and Randy Moss and you've got something. Give him what he has now and he's meh.

Let's REALLY pump the brakes here...this is what the article says about O'Brien:

"O’Brien has bounced between college and the NFL, and if he were to bounce back, the Spartans could be a landing spot."

The article is by a guy named Richard Johnson, who works for the SEC Network. O'Brien garnered a whole ONE sentence in the article, while other candidates, in the esteemed Mr. Johnson's opinion, were worth two sentences (in Jason Candle's case, whoever the f#ck Jason Candle is), three sentences in Mark Stoops' case, and another three complete thought's in Mike Elko of Duke's case.

Michigan State COULD be a landing spot....and I COULD take a walk down to the the corner store near my office, buy a scratch ticket, and hit for a cool million....

In closing, lets not overreact to some clown's one-sentence opinion in an SI article

How often have you been at a job where a position was "promised" to you? I would put $ on never. This doesn't happen. $ makes the world go round and I am sure that's what kept Mayo around. I would rather we keep OB than to be up ****s creek a la when JMD left...don't want another FatMatt experiment with BB's granddaughter or something...

Top 20 program in revenue and attendance.
I agree it is not a “crap program” but also is not the very top in terms of prestige. It is second fiddle to Michigan in its home state. BOB already left a similar program in Penn State. Michigan state is not Alabama or Ohio State.

How many successful recent head coaches never called plays?

I have no idea if Bill, Mac or BOB will be back next season but if Bill and Mac are back it would be brutal to have Mac on his 4th OC in 4 years. Those types of things destroy QBs.

Is there a understudy for BOB?? Really wanted us to keep Caley last Off-season.
