So to summarize, Patriots cut their backup qb, signed a new backup qb who quit the team after 9 days, all right before opening game of season.

Backup qb is not important UNTIL all of a sudden he becomes the most important player on the roster.

This looks like the MLB rule not the NFL. There is no such thing as designating someone for assignment in the NFL.

When a claim is made on a NFL player he becomes under contract to the claiming team.
