Zappe is back as QB2 Corral on Reserve/Left Squad list

If they thought Zappe was a good backup they would never have subjected him to waivers and lost his 3 year rookie contract. Unbelievable mismanagement to go into the season with a number 2 quarterback you’ve openly told you don’t have confidence in.
I'm sure this is BOB driven, not BB. The message is that Zappe is a good enough backup for now, and safer than Corral at this point, but neither one is great. No other team is likely to claim either one at this point, so I think Corral could be back.

Cutting Zappe and his 4th round contract then bringing him back on a cheaper deal, and then cutting Corral before his 3rd rounder salary is guaranteed this season by being on the 53 and signing him to a PS contract instead, probably does save a small amount of cash. Though I imagine the move was more due to the emergency QB rule changes than otherwise.
It saves no money. Zappe will be paid the same 2nd year minimum he was originally scheduled to make. If Corral clears waivers and signs on to the PS, he’ll get the set salary for a player with less than 2 years of experience like Zappe was getting.

The Zappe transactions decrease 2024 cap space because his prorated signing bonus which originally would have been prorated in 24 and 25 accelerated into 2024 when he was cut.

However, the big difference would be in 2025 where he could be restricted free agent requiring a tender rather than him being in the 4th year of his original contract. Last year when the Pats resigned Kevin Harris during the season they gave him additional bonus money to get a contract 4 years in length. It will be interesting to see if the Pats do the same for Zappe.

He is worse than no good he sucks. Patriots officially have the worst backup QB in the league.

I really don't understand at all what Bill is doing with the back up QB position ...
My thoughts aren't all that different than before: this was to let Zappe and the rest of the world know he has to up his game.
It turns out Corral isn't the guy to displace him now, but we do know for sure the Pats are looking for improvement.

You people grousing realize if Corral makes the practice squad he’s still on the team… right?
I'm not grousing, but I'm also not sure they plan to offer Corral a spot on the PS, has that been established?

I guess Corral gets a game check since he was on the 53 on the Tuesday of game week?

These cheapskate moves by the Patriots might save a few bucks, but for the players involved it must feel incredibly obnoxious...especially if the Patriots just did this to save money. Seems obnoxious to me also...

Hades you are the clown if you think having Zappe as your backup qb is a good situation. I suppose it is great if Pats are aiming for a top 5 pick in next years draft

Oh sure, leave it to Ross to make sense of the situation...

From my observations, players on the bubble care the most about the roster spot. Sure, they like/want more money, but at the same time those on the bubble know there are only so many roster spots and once you lose one you don't know if you'll get another.

One example: I just listened to a long interview with Edelman. He talked a lot about pre-draft work outs, team visits, "pro days", waiting to be called during the draft, finally being drafted in the 7th round, then immediately playing the "numbers game" to see if he would get a roster spot, then not being sure he'd keep that roster spot for his first few seasons. In that entire discussion, he never mentioned money.

Sort of related…I guess the Pats are all in with the Cunningham WR experiment even if he didn’t really show he’s up to the job yet in the summer.

Because that’s where people look first to determine how a team will finish - the backup QB

You really are an imbecile

Nothing changed for Zappe, Fred. Zappe has to be paid at LEAST the NFL 2 yr minimum. We won't know if he resigned for his rookie contract, but the difference between the 137th pick and the minimum is minimal (try saying that 3 times fast )

Stop being so knee jerk to every money action the Pats make. You sound like Felger when it's "his time of the month" (sorry Patsy) Didn't you see Miguel's last cap #. It was about $8MM I think, maybe a bit less. That is about the MINIMUM you need to make an in season move or two. CLEARLY at least on the offensive side of the ball, the roster is going to be "fluid",

In day or two we'll see the final #, In a week we'll start to hear why the Corral thing didn't work out. At least the speculation of what happened. Doesn't sound like he will be back on the PS.

This says to me that they intended to “game the system” with Corral being game day inactive on the 53 while being the 3rd QB and Zappe being the 2nd QB called up from PS. With the NFL closing the book on that opportunity, they would now either need to have all 3 guys active to use all 3, or only have Mac and Zappe active as a PS elevation while Corral was inactive, and they couldn’t use him as the “3rd QB” for a free roster spot. Because of that, they probably felt that Corral was wasting a roster spot so they may as well bring Zappe back back to the 53 and be able to PS elevate someone else.

They may also feel somewhat secure in Corral making it to the PS knowing that they were the only team that submitted a claim for him. Of course, Corral has to agree to sign instead of maybe going back to Carolina’s PS, but he little chance of being more than the QB3 there. He has a chance of beating out Zappe in NE.
**** the Comish...may he get herpes and crabs. I hope the crabs crawl in the open wounds and get stuck under the scabs so he can feel the creepy crawly's under his skin. Then when he itches he scraped off the scabs starting the process all over again.

That's all.

IMO a lot changed for Zappe, he went from clear QB2 with a few starts last season on a four year rookie contract to a free agent signing who now knows the team is actively looking for someone better than him to take his job.

To me it doesn't mean "he sucks" like some post here, but it does mean he has to step up his game or he'll be replaced.

imagine if zappe got claimed. this could've been an absolute disaster

but i'm sure posters will pretend all is fine. cutting your backup, then signing him back and cutting the backup you cut your backup for! all a day before the season opener

Well from this posters perspective. I wasn't surprised he was cut the first time. In fact I stated it was likely before it happened. I also stated that I could not find a single QB room where he would be an upgrade from what they had currently. It was my presumption they would cut him, sign a veteran and bring him back on the practice squad. I had two out of three and based on reports they tried to get a veteran but it didn't work out. Definitely didn't see the Corral thing.

If I could asses the situation correctly why would you think the people paid to asses these types of things couldn't?

The only risk in cutting Zappe was him signing on to a practice squad somewhere else. And even that, as has been proven out was highly unlikely. His best chance to be a number two is here, with maybe Arizona being the other lone possibility. But when you factor in familiarity and other factors such as quality of coaching, team talent etc...that really wasn't an option either. Arizona would potentially be a death sentence to a young developmental QB.

So no I don't believe it was a risk at all.

Just my two cents.

Yes this is all normal roster changes, nothing to see here move on
Just like making your dc OC for your 2nd year qb.
