Zappe is back as QB2 Corral on Reserve/Left Squad list

Hades you are the clown if you think having Zappe as your backup qb is a good situation. I suppose it is great if Pats are aiming for a top 5 pick in next years draft
No respect for Mac Jones?

Playoffs and Pro Bowl his rookie season.

Because you can't take someone off of another teams PS just to put him on your PS, you have to put him on your 53.
Except he wasn't on a PS yet - he was cut.

We have something of a roster crunch - would have needed to elevate Zappe and a RB, and maybe they needed someone else too given the extra OL we need to carry. The potential Jones IR thing is a new complication.

Fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants roster management at the most important position in sports.
I can think of a few positions in sports more important than backup QB…

I try not to attack the Pat’s front office, except their drafts (and rightfully so some years), but this is the type of stuff we used to make fun of other franchises of during the Pat’s dynasty years. These QB maneuvers the last 10 days are ridiculous.
No this is the stuff we used to do. Use the rules to our advantage. Play games with bottom of the roster players to make the team better.

imagine if zappe got claimed. this could've been an absolute disaster

but i'm sure posters will pretend all is fine. cutting your backup, then signing him back and cutting the backup you cut your backup for! all a day before the season opener

So the difference between Zappe and some vet backup is large enough to be described as an absolute disaster?

Let's see if we can get to the bottom of this.

When a player is cut, they are either “waived” or “released.” A player who has at least four accrued seasons is released, not waived, meaning their contract is immediately terminated and they are a free agent who can sign anywhere immediately. A player with less than four accrued seasons is “waived,” meaning their contract stays intact until they go through the waiver wire process.

So he was both cut and waived, but not released (since he was only a year 2 player), and was subject to waivers.

A waived player can be claimed by any other team looking for more talent. For roster cutdowns, any player waived from Thursday to Tuesday’s deadline remains on waivers until Wednesday at Noon ET (more on deadlines below). During that time, teams will submit waiver claims, expressing their interest in specific players. At the end of the claim period (Noon ET on Wednesday, in this case), the team with the highest waiver priority is awarded the player and his current contract. Note: That player is immediately placed on their 53-man roster. You cannot put a waiver claim on the practice squad. Only free agents can be signed to the practice squad. If a player is not claimed in that window, their contract is terminated, they become a free agent, and they are free to sign anywhere, be it to a team’s 53-man roster or a practice squad.

We were the only one to make a claim on Corral, he ended up on our 53 with his original contract intact, he was never a FA, there was no path to put him on our PS.

This matches my understanding of what went on, but I could be missing something....

Guess it’s not a surprise with corral’s absence on Friday. Interesting getting rid of him so quickly… maybe he couldn’t learn the playbook fast enough to be the backup at the start of the season. Still think they’ll look for a vet.

LOL, Musical chairs at QB is what it feels like.

I'm thinking they wanted an up close look at Corral and ultimately decided to go with the known quantity which is Bailey Zappe.

It doesn't hurt us at all, but you've got to wonder what Zappe is thinking. Well he knows even that backup role isn't assured.

I don't feel like picking up former 3rd round picks and 4th round picks is enough to light a fire under Mac Jones butt though.

Let's see how he does against the Eagles. This is the make or break year. If he doesn't perform we're going to need to take a serious swing in next year's draft.

"I need to stop sucking and play better"

Anything other than that, and he'll be looking for work soon enough.

Zappe is thinking that if I don't play better, my sorry arse is down the road.

It worked out for the best.

Corky boy got what he wanted and thats the Pats QB job all his. Zappe got sent down to the minors and got his money cut.

IMO, that was the point of the exercise.

I agree. We have to decide if we extend him this year, and for that to happen, he has to be a better than average QB1 this season.

Yes I think that is correct. Difference from claiming a player from someone else's PS is that here we didn't have to keep him on the roster for three game.

Anyone understand this? Seems to be used for players that don't show up to practice for some reason - not formally cut, but opens up a roster spot and can't be claimed by someone else. Kind of like frozen in time.

Yup—sounds like a no-show. I can’t recall seeing this before.

He has battled depression in the past, maybe he just decided he wasn't up for this challenge...
