Player Signing Pats add QB Matt Corral

Bailey Zappe is on the practice squad. Matt Corral is on the 53. This status could change in a few weeks but by default Matt is ahead in the pecking order right now.
Sure, that's one way to see the situation. Really, until the first game, we don't know what they think of their backup QBs.

Not having a backup QB ahead of week 1 is flailing around

Our backup QB has not taken a snap with the Patriots ever. We cut all our supposed backups who spent the off-season with the team.
I assume Zappe will be elevated for the Eagles game. So they have Bailey Zappe and Matt Corral.

The Panthers traded with us in 2022 and gave us two picks, one in 2022 and one in 2023, to move up and select Corral. We used the Panthers 2022 pick to select Zappe, and the 2023 pick to select Mapu. We now have all three players from the trade. Crazy.
Damn that BB the GM

at the end of the day we should know in about 4 weeks whether "everything is fine" with these odd moves on the offensive side of the ball a week before the season. or Bill left the offense out to dry once again with just poor management/ignoring of that side of the ball

alot of the defense of having ignoring offense in the draft, having 11 OL, releasing all our backup qb's, only 2 RB's. strikes me alot of the "everything will be fine" defense of patricia/judge until it went off the rails and fans had to accept it was a mistake.

He's not WRONG technically speaking. The Patriots ARE casting about for a QB.
Casting and flailing aren't the same thing.

But this is exactly what you need to do when you're not SURE that you've got 'your guy'. You need to keep casting that net till you find someone.
Agree, so it bodes poorly for Zappe.

Who knows BOB might think that Corral is the better prospect and that's exactly why we claimed him. He might say - this guy will fit my system better, he can do more things that I need in a QB for my system than a Zappe or a Cunningham.
Probably correct, or may be viewed to have more all-around upside regardless of system fit.

I get that he has to now be on the 53. I'm wondering what BB has in mind for QB2. I'm assuming he wouldn't put a game into Corral's hands at this early stage so somehow Zappe has to be elevated. Then, does BB go with 3 QBs or does Corral somehow get stashed to await his fuller development? If he's to be stashed then somehow he has to be slipped onto the PS or he gets IRed.
Zappe can be elevated from the PS to be eligible for a single game. He does not have to be on the 53 to play in that game. He then reverts to the PS.

Players on the 53 can be inactive for a game. So Corral can be inactive while on the 53. He does not have to be demoted to the PS.

Zappe can be elevated from the PS for three games without being on the 53. If they want to do it for a fourth game he has to be signedvto the 53.

so after the first three weeks either Zappe makes it onto the 53, or Corral is up to speed enough that he can activated as QB2 On game day.

NBD.

Very helpful summary.

Players poached from the PS have to remain on 53 man roster for first 3 weeks of season or cut.
In Corral's case, he was not poached from PS, but simply signed off of waivers.
If Patriots wanted to get Corral onto PS, they would have to first release him and then he would have to pass through waivers before Pats could sign him to PS.

So, if Pats want to keep him, for now he has to stay on 53 man roster or risk losing him to another team (unlikely, since no one else put in a claim for him)

I suspect....Pats keep Corral on 53 man roster but leave him inactive for many weeks until he has learned playbook sufficiently (maybe 6 weeks). Until then patriots can promote Zappe as backup QB to active roster for each game for 3 weeks (while leaving Corral on inactive game day roster) and then he immediately returns to PS after the game. After first 3 games if Corral is not ready to be backup they will have 2 options...either promote Zappe back to 53 man roster or start the 3 game promotion from backup squad all over again with Cunningham.

Honestly, I think the Corral claim says more about Malik Cunningham than Bailey Zappe.
I was going to suggest the same thing. Corral is an athletic guy, who runs really well.
But I think this weekend will determine a lot. It may be that Corral can be ready to operate BOB's offense as well as Zappe can in about 9 days.

A couple of thoughts on Corral after a few days.

The Felgar take is (as usual) spurious. The Pats back up QB for the first game is the same one we all expected to have, and that is Bailey Zappe and WILL likely be Bailey Zappe for the first 3 games while Corral gets up to speed. The QB battle is for the back up position. THAT will be the only position "controversy" on this team.

You only have to listen to Phil Sims ode to Matt Corral on PFK prior to that draft to understand WHY the Pats chose to take a shot with him. The kid is essentially a rookie and he looks like one in a new system with mostly new receivers. The QB school breakdown is a LOT less flattering than Sims' from 18 months ago. But nothing he comments isn't READILY fixable. The physical qualities .of arm strength and speed are there. Fine tuning accuracy is the hurdle he has to overcome.... it seems.

One guy will be the back up and one guy on the PS. Ultimately you need 3 guys to practice with. Now Malik can be just be a WR and part time scout team QB

On Bailey Zappe's demotion to the PS: A number of apologists point out that it's unfair to judge Zappe because of the crappy OL's that we had to use in 3 Preseason Games. It's a legit point....IF we were only talking about those games. But the FACT is that Zappe did NOT lose his job because of how he looked in those preseason games (thought it certainly didn't help). He is on the PS because he didn't look good in just too many practises and joint sessions this summer,

At this point we are "FINE" at QB for the Eagle game. At least as it pertains to the OMG squad outcry over having only 1 QB on the CURRENT roster. On the 11th there WILL be 2 plus the emergency guy. So can we end the handringing on that issue at least.

In MY ideal world, we will eventually add that solid vet #2 and Corral ends up on the PS

Can we please move on from ”Zappe”. The simple fact he played most the preseason, looked terrible, looked terrible in actual games last year, and was waived….should be a STRONG indication of his standing. The ridiculous obsession with him is clownish and unrealistic.

I do think Corral is a great fit for what BOB wants to do with the offense. He’s not a great deep passer, but that’s not really a huge part of the offense. Corral is good in the short/intermediate game, mobile, can run RPO well. Teams would actually have to respect him a little as a runner. If he can pick things up (and I think he will fine, since BOB can just translate it into Kiffin language for him) then he can probably win some games if Mac got hurt.

Right, my concern is mainly his accuracy. But if they work on that with him, he’d probably be a fine back up. It’s just watching how long they keep Zappe on the roster to tell us when they’re comfortable with Corral being QB2.

Yeah…the accuracy is apparently a big issue 25+ yards. Teams will not respect those throws and will play it short until he beats them. He might be good with short to medium but if the D is taking away that yardage…he’s screwed. Nobody will care about Thornton, Boutte or whoever.
