TC ROSTER TALK

WR Tre Nixon showed signs last TC and fizzled out with drops in the end: he looks like has some short area quickness along with sneaky deep speed. Would be nice if he made that improved jump. I am pretty sure we are carrying Five WR's so Five guys might be battling for one spot. One or both of the Douglas - Boutte should make the PS when it's all said and done unless they play lights out.
Douglas would get grabbed by another team in a heartbeat.

Boutte may be one of the first cut unless he changes his attitude and work ethic.. It's pretty telling when a Vet chimes after your OC has taken you to Task.

That being said, Mills needs to watch his mouth as well. Generally, we haven't see that sort of comment from a Vet. Usually that's a "Behind Closed doors, vet pulling the rook aside", type of thing. Not something that get's broadcast into the media.

Rodney Randle - 170 to 205. That's puttin' in the work!

Hopefully he didn't lose any of his speed. He posted a 4.28 at his Pro Day in 2019..

He could be a candidate to move to FS.

Unless Boutte gets his act together, he may not see a Pre-Season game if Mills reaction to O'Brien's tirade was any indication.

I had missed that whole kerfluffle when it happened, but going back with google to review it just now it seems Mills had Boutte’s back and was criticizing the original video post embarrassing Boutte. So I’m at a loss about your interpret, unless I’ve missed something.

here‘s what I found:
Patriots Veteran Responds To Video Of Bill O'Brien 'Ripping' Rookie

from that: “Mills’ response was a show of support for Boutte”

I don’t think Mills’ reaction would be met with disfavor from coaches either, as what he said is stuff like that should be kept in house not plastered over the netiverse.

I expected Onwenu to start on PUP. It's good to see that no other big names were listed

I disagree.

We've had many, many camp and pre-season WR stars that we waived. And many, many of them were NOT grabbed by another team for their 53.

And those players were stars in training camp, scrimmages, and in pre-season games. Douglas hasn't had the opportunity to show anything yet.

Should we really cut Bourne so that Douglas can be our #4 WR?

Or is Douglas worth a developmental roster spot, almost always inactive, unless there are injuries.
=============
Or perhaps, you are saying that Belichick is SO good at drafting and finding developmental WR's that teams wait to see our cuts at WR.

FOR ME
Douglas is a player competing for one of the 5 or 6 last roster spots. He is nothing really special right now.

This team has way too many questions and yet posters believe they will get 10-11 wins.

Duly noted. Will be looking forward to your account of getting up close and personal with our ursine friends.

22 lbs for Douglas, 14 for Mapu, 19 for Godchaux

Is this comparing their weight at this year's minicamp vs their weight when real games were being played? Seems unlikely that there'd be such a significant increase in playing weight accross the whole roster.

I believe they were weighed at mini camp and it’s probably the case with last years numbers. Weights are going to change between now and the regular season anyway…just a fun thing to look at.

Love how he’s holding cleats then practicing barefoot in that second series. Guess the shoe didnt fit. Might be a good label or hashtag for some comments and threads. #shoedontfit

Already fit athletes don't put on 35 pounds of muscle in a few months. So either his body fat composition has changed or he is the subject of an alien experiment.
I was just thinking that I hope it wasn't too much time spent at the Golden Corral all you can eat.

Edit: Maybe it was just late puberty.

All those greats backs you've mentioned have something in common.. they are all often injured.. because the the carries they take. Rham just has to be able to not be overloaded like he was Last season and he will match or surpass those guys IMO. Under BOB he will be more of a focal point in passing situations as well.

???

Jacobs/Chubb have barely missed games.

Derrick Henry has had one major injury in 7 years. Besides that, he's played almost every game.

McCaffrey has played every game four of his six years, and one of the years he missed games was the Covid year.

Only Barkley has been injury prone.

Very true. This team has a high floor, limited ceiling. Unless the offense starts cooking with a dominant running game, get the TEs involved and, deep strikes open up for WRs. Esp Thornton.

If big chunks plays open up for speedy guys on the outside, then this would be a tough offense to defend. Go, Tyquan. We’re all rooting for you!

I think someone needs to break out. whether its Gesicki realizing his potential (ad 780 yards just 2 years ago) or Bourne being a 1000 yard receiver, or Thornton making a 2nd year jump.

whether that will happen remains to be seen.

Well, if Boutte's feelings were hurt, he won't make the team. If he takes it to heart maybe he will. Mills should just shut up, he only stirred it all up again.

Onwenu: More like OnWenUGonBeBack? amirite?
Trent Brown: I thought I read on here he lost a bunch of weight and now weighs less than the rest of the team combined or something?

The rest of the line: I hope to GOD that last year was the coaching staff bed-crapping that's emerged as the dominant narrative. It definitely sounds like they just did not know who goes where, blind leading the blind. If that's the case, they've got unknown ability, and with BOB in charge, can make this team look very good.

KB turned into this weird fan favorite when he was in the doghouse last year. Honestly, there is no measurable that makes one think "oh let's get that guy the ball." He was just 2A-2B with Meyers in a year without a 1... and by the way, unless TyQuantumUncertainty is alive when we open the box this year, we're still going to be speading the ball around to okay guys. It's a value approach. If somehow we get a "true no. 1" cheap, fine. But I think BB 2024 would rather be the team you can't score on than the team you can't outscore.

I think we're set at RB and want to keep that pipeline producing, but if someone can add value at value, yes, we'll try to grab him.

Defense
Oh, a Wise/Guy, eh? You started it... I think the D Line looks good-to-very-good, and we're also in that category at OLB. You're right that ILB shows nobody special, although it's hard to look special at ILB. I think the Front 7 is solid enough with some legit stars (Barmore DUH, Judon, sometimes Uche, let's hope for instant wrecking-ball success from K. White,) but you can't be all things to all people. A Tavai will never look mind-bendingly good, unless he's a unicorn. He's there to stop the run, not match up with tight ends. He ended up with a respectable 69 tackles but when was the last time we oooh'd and ahhh'd about a number of tackles a guy has ascribed to him? That said, other than out-of-bounds plays and turnovers, every play that ends well for the defense ends in a tackle so I'm okay with a decent tackler.

There is nothing you will notice more or more deeply than a day when nobody on the team can seem to face anything more than arm tackling. You turn down the game and make a sound halfway between "uhhh" and "ehhhh," like somebody who really wanted to be somewhere else half-heartedly arm-tackling a guy, and you make that sound 3 or 4 times, until the bad guy in question is in the end zone. No thank you. The world needs Tavais or some upgrade on Tavai (he followed Matt Patricia here, so it's worth watching who's up next.)

Keion White "Things That Make You Go Hmmm" reminder: Started college career as a tight end. 285 pounds and can catch. He's going to take time in the system and with honing technique to be truly disruptive but lots of promise. And I predict we throw him into weird short yardage or 2-point packages before his stay with the Pats is over, provided he doesn't stink up the joint with his day job rushing the QB/setting the edge. I'm honestly excited about him. I think he'll lose battles against some of the more skilled tackles in the league but he is going to destroy some guys along the way. (Yes, I am in pre-season, believe-all-hype mode.)

Jack Jones may need a breakout year, but not the kind you're thinking of. We'll see how that plays out. Like everybody else, I have super-high hopes for Gonzo out there, but I wanted him as an added CB, not a replacement. If we still have Jalen Mills I think we should legally require him to have it changed to Jalen Jones to keep things simple, ditto Miles Bryant. I trust Peppers and Dugger, but that's just me :D.

Otherwise I was very ready to fawn over this D, but yeah, the formerly scary-looking secondary will look less so without our no. 1 corner, or should I say, no. 1 with a bullet, or should I say with a couple loaded firearms full of em. Just play football Jack. Damn. Okay moving on.

WTF is up with Ronnie Perkins. He's up to two redshirt years. Is the idea that he will never play, whoops, just a third rounder, no big? Would love to see guys like that who we've forgotten have a stellar camp, with previous poor production suddenly explained as they come out of hiding. I'm sorry, but we need some breaks like that too.

"Every day you see one more card."

I can see this defense still being very good. The offense? As I've said, I don't know how much to lay at the feet of Patricia and Judge (the latter of whom will actually be back, yikes.)

Here's a nightmare thought: Maybe they actually were okay, not wretched, and a few players siezed on the difficulty of the new blocking scheme to paint them in the worst possible light. What then? I don't think that's the reality, but if it is, big yikes.

I'm trying to remain grounded, because we really had a bottom-third or bottom-fourth of the league offense last year. Sort of "bottom of the regular pack, before you get to the teams people would say are a good college team." So it's tempting to find a single-point failure, with that single point being coaching.

So I like the idea that Matt Patricia just sucked and all our players are great, yayyyyy, but I just think we're actually shooting for mediocre on offense, and last year we missed. That's not because we want to be mediocre, it's because we've chosen to stop pouring resources into the passing game unless it is a great value proposition.

I think.

Good to see Trent post this on social media days before TC.
I take it as a hopeful sign he's locked in.
Conditioning test looms. Won't be easy with 88' temps

Onwenu is the key guy. Can he return to form after his off-season surgery?

I would be glued to the offensive line at TC. Chasen Hines is an nfl player who needs to control his weight. Can he make an impact and be a contributor?

And what about Sidy Sow? Can he make it as a tackle, most definitely only RT? I hear his lateral mobility isn’t good.

Real coaching on the line? Yo, Adrian! Are we going to see that? Last year…let’s forget about last year.

I’m excited by these rookies. I like Mafi. I think Jake Andrews will be a keeper.

The return of Trent Brown is as immense as his size. Will he be in shape and ready to go at LT?

Without solid play from him, we could see the offense have problems. Calvin Anderson might work out as a backup, but having him man LT for the season probably won’t be a good idea.

Great to see Brown working hard, and apparently in shape... but is it possible to say that a 6'8" 350 lb-er looks smaller?
I hope he's ready to dominate. If he plays every game at least at his career average capability, our offense should be noticeably improved.
Because I think Brown - Strange - Andrews - Onwenu - ?? is a very solid OL, mostly because of the OL coaches and an OC who know about offensive football. And we have enough vet options to find a serviceable RT.
