He was known to party anytime I hear of an adult drowning it makes me wonder if drugs or alcohol could have played a part. I know a girl who passed out and drowned in a hot tub.
Doesn’t make it more or less sad just where my mind goes.
Reading about the strong currents is super sad.
Condolences to anyone who cared about him and it’s sad as heck to hear.

According to the National Weather Service, there was/is no rip tide warning issued. Where are you reading this?

Sympathies to the family. Can't imagine losing my son like that.

A poster on this threat mentioned the Tides earlier.

I’m just echoing their statement.

Apparently there have been 11 deaths recently in the Panhandle due to rip currents. I have seen news stories about a couple of the drownings and people have been arrested for entering the water when it was prohibited

There have been rip currents on the Atlantic side as well, it was an issue this past weekend, and the red flags were up. We also heard some people talking who also said it was a little strong. So while there may not have been an advisory, it's definitely been something that people have needed to be wary of.

Shocked when I saw this. Awful.

Patriots and Bill Belichick just issued a statement:

"I am extremely saddened by Ryan's tragic passing. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and the many people whose lives he touched."

- Bill Belichick

"The New England Patriots are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and unexpected passing of former quarterback Ryan Mallett.

Our thoughts are with the Mallett family, his former teammates and all who are mourning his loss."

I used to live in Fort Walton and went to the Destin and Navarre beaches plenty of times. Let me tell you, even without weather warnings the rip tides there can be pretty strong and if you aren't used to it or have never experienced it at all, even the slightest bit of it can cause you to panic and fatigue and something like this can happen. Not to presume or anything, just speaking from experience that just because no rip tides were reported doesn't mean they were non existent

What a tragedy. Godspeed young man.

There was a rip current.

still surprising for an nfl athlete to drown, rip currents really only drown you if you try to fight the current and swim directly against it, tiring yourself out

you can let it take you out a ways while you swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the rip tide

really sad story, 35 is way too young

If it was a rip current, it is very easy to tire yourself out trying to move against it... We all have heard swim parallel not against it... in theory thats great, but when you get caught in a rip you may not realize it at first, and when you do the first inclination is to move towards shore... most people tire themselves out very quickly in the water because they aren't strong swimmers...

i spent my life on the water... was on a swim team, scuba diving, was a scuba instructor for a decade... I was a very good swimmer... but most people aren't... they can swim, sure, but unless you are prepared, the ocean is a dangerous place... even the slightest current is too strong to swim against...
