Patriots Player Departure Jonnu traded to ATL

Definitely a sunk cost type of decision being made here, but it's the right one. I was excited when they signed him, but he just never got it here, AND was injured a lot to boot. What I want to know is what Atlanta is thinking... already having Pitts makes this a bit of a head scratcher.

The WR and TE FA class aren't good this year. They could resign Jakobi but it's going to cost them. They're going to have to replace Jonnu through the draft.

I keep hearing that the TE class in this year's draft is one of the deepest in recent memories. I think it's a guarantee they draft one now, but it won't have to be high. There will be options in the mid rounds, if they decide not to take someone like Washington (who may be in kind of a dead zone between their picks anyway).

Well that clearly is a good move, even if it's only for a 7th. Gain another 10+MM in cap space, avoid the money he was going have count next year. AND that 7th round pick could be used to grab the punter we so desperately need.

I could see that... not going to bet money on it working, but that at least provides a road map for them.

Very easy they are replacing someone who gave them next to nothing.
They still have to have more that one starting TE on the roster. Unless you're that high on Sokol.

Reportedly for a 7th, if true basically a salary dump.

I'd think they could get more for him but yes, in that case it's a straight salary dump. What a disappointment he was here. All that size, speed and physical talent just didn't translate.

They're going to spend a 4th or 5th on a punter and kicker. BB is not going to stop his drafting philosophy in drafting specialists this late in the game.

Ok for the last six months people have been saying they would trade Smith for a bag of footballs. Now people are crying about a $13 million cap hit and only $4.4 million in savings?

Darnell Washington would be the #1 TE on this Team in no time he won't last until #46 though. That said it's still a good class with others.

My guess is that he wasn't really deemed a fit for what BOB wanted to run and cost way too much so they moved on. However, he was their best blocking TE, all they have left is Henry who is a fine receiver but not much of a blocker. Very curious if they pursue an FA TE...

C'mon Rob we would have liked it the other way around this year but we'll take it. :)

Hope they don’t pay Gesicky 20M a year and let Meyers go because he wanted 15M

Those people just want to complain and say "Patriots bad."

"Jonnu on roster? Patriots bad! Trade Jonnu for nothing!"

"Jonnu traded? Too much dead money! Patriots bad!"

The funny thing is that many people think Washington will be the 4th TE to get taken after Kincaid, Mayer and Musgrave

This year's TE rookie class is supposed to be stacked. I am guessing the Pats will be targeting a TE in the early rounds.
