Jakobi Meyers ▣ Free Agency

Devonta Smith is 6.0 and about 175 which is the closest i can think of
Waddle is 5'10" and 180 lbs, so shorter.
3 inches or more is considerably shorter for a WR. Smith and Waddle are premier NFL WRs already. I would love for the Patriots to have a duo of Brown and Smith or Hill and Waddle. We don't have one guy as good as any of those four, never mind two. WR is the position I really want the Patriots to most invest in heading into 2023. An at least above average WR corps is a must in today's NFL, especially in the heavily loaded AFC.

Don't forget TE Brother those two positions are not bad in the upcoming Draft. I am pretty sure their are stuck with Jonnu Smith for at least this year we can eat his $6Mill dead cap hit next year.

Fully agree. I'm ok with Hunter Henry but Jonnu is nothing but worthless at this point. Another TE1/2 to go along with Henry is another need.

Our TE's make way too much $$$ for what they don't do.

Wants 15-20m per? lol hard pass, go get someone in the 3rd or 4th in the draft, BOB should be able to integrate Bourne and Thornton much better than Patricia did.

You're ok with Parker, Bourne, Thornton, and a 3rd or 4th round rookie? And probably a low-to-mid range FA WR signing.

Count me out on that scenario, which would lower my expectations to 7-10. O'Brien doesn't have a magic wand, he'll need an above average supporting cast to make it work with Mac Jones.

2 years isn't going to fly for him or us, capwise... The typical deal is 4 years... Guys gotta move away from thinking a two year deal will work...
yes,, contracts would be for 4 years. Many are effective 2 year contracts. For example, There could an option bonus before the 3rd year.

The team will have an easy out after year 2, if the contract is longer. The two additional years will be smoke and mirrors.

This will give them the flexibility to go after a real #1 next year.

If we pay Meyers top dollar of 15m+ then we can't get a more explosive WR1 in as paying top WR1 and top WR2 money isn't really feasible i believe. We need a more explosive WR, Meyers is great but no tds or YAC and if it's a case of Meyers or a true no1 i would go with a No1 every time as the offense needs it.

My guess is that we are trading for a WR, with a redone contract. The 2023 cap. even for a $25M a year contract, could be a reasonable $8M. Obviously, we might be signing a player for less.

EXAMPLE OF a 4-year/$50M contract (ignoring any performance bonuses)

Player gets $25M cash a year.

The team defers $26M to 2025 and 2026. This becomes dead money if the player doesn't stay. Essentially, this is a 2-year $50M deal. Parties might want an Option Bonus before the 2025 season.

Signing Bonus: $24M
2023: salary: $2M
2024 roster bonus $21M
2024 salary $3M
2025 salary $20M
2026 salary $20M

2023 salary cap: $6M + $2M = $8M
2024 salary cap: $6M + $7M + $3M = $16M
2025 salary cap: $6M +$7M + $24M = $38M
2026 salary cap: $6M + $7M +$26M + $38M

Or an Impact Rookie totally possible.

It looks like he will at least be allowed to explore offers and see what he can fetch. If someone offers him 15m per I believe hes gone. But you never know, I remember hightower coming back after not getting a great offer elsewhere when i thought he was gone.

Signs are pointing to Meyers leaving. This would be a great move by Bill.

Read that... Disappointed a bit...

But, in regards to something like this, BB is all too often going to let the player walk rather than overpay them, unless they really are standout players... Meyers is good, but not that good...

Still, guys like Meyers (and Jonathan Jones for that matter) are the types of players i want on the roster... Undrafted to starters, merit earned thru hard work and dedication...

The Patriots currently are $155 million under the projected 2024 cap with 31 players under contract.

Even with an active off-season this year, they’ll probably be around a $100 million under with around 45 players under contract at the start of next offseason.

Belichick said to the media at the end of last season that even with the spending in the 2021 off-season that the team was still 27th in spending over the last 3 seasons.

NFL teams have to spend to 90% of the cap over a 5 year period. Where are the Patriots spending money to get to the floor?

Some of you act like it’s your money they’re spending. They’ve got to spend it somewhere, and I for one will be damn angry if they fail to make a competitive offer to the guy who’s been their best receiver over the last 3 season. Meyers has limitations, but he’s a good and productive player. Rarely does it work when you go back to go forward.

The on the cheap days have come and gone. They no longer have Bill and Tom in their primes to lift inadequate talent to wins. We’ll see what happens, but they have money to spend, and they have to spend enough of it to reach the salary floor.

I understand your take but please remember this 9 out of 10 times the player will go for the $$$$$. They'll always say I would love to resign with Team X and then signs with Team Y. Meyers played for peanuts for Four years and made a name for himself you can bet he's going to the highest bidder. One thing we know about BB he won't get into any bidding wars.

He will be "allowed"?

There is nothing the team can do to stop him from looking, especially in the last 2 days of this season.

I mean they are not going to try to resign him at that price which would prevent him becoming a fa. They will let him check out other offers and if nobody bites maybe sign him closer to what they want. As i said, could be similar to when hightower was a fa unless someone actually wants to pay him $15m plus

Completely different players Hightower was the heart of our Defense old school Patriots LB. The consensus was that we weren't moving on from him and he knew that. Original First Rounder compared to a UDFA.

Comparing the situations. Hightower visited multiple teams and easily could have signed elsewhere had the money been right. What you said would apply if he was locked up prior to hitting fa, once a player does hit fa all bets are off.
