The optimistic case for Mac Jones

Mike White threw for 400 yards in a game once. That's way better than Zappe's best. White is not an NFL starting QB.
Mike White is in year five of his pro career, and his teammates on the Jets think he's a starting QB, they made t-shirts pushing for him to start. I think he's a slow developing player. Zappe was a rookie... comparing the two isn't exactly fair.

Zappe was 24-34, 309 yards, 2 TD's and no INT's with a 118 QB Rating averaging over 9 yards per attempted pass against the Browns. He put up the 2nd highest passing total on the season against their defense. Diminishing a solid rookie season on a dumpster fire of an offense seems to be pushing an agenda.

Eh he was a practice squad guy until last season so I'd consider him a "rookie" last season. He threw for 405 yards in his 3rd game as Jets starter in 2021. Against the Bengals who would go on to win the AFC. Way better than anything Zappe did. And the Bengals were a much better team than the 2022 Browns. My point is most backup quality QB's have stretches where they play really well. They just can't sustain it that's why they're backups.

Is White a starting caliber QB - dunno if I'd go that far.

White started three games last year, he started his career back in 2018. Experience is experience.

QB's are unlike most NFL positions, they can float around for years before developing into capable starters or finding capable teams who can harness whatever abilities they have. Geno Smith is a great example of that, Steve Young is also.

Zappe as a starter was undefeated, his efficiency stats were so good historians had to go back to Sonny Jurgensen in 1957 to find similar rookie starter stats. I'm not saying he can sustain that over time, but suggesting he can't is equally as absurd. We have no clue what Mac or Zappe will become.

The quote: "The future is Mac Jones - I'm excited for this guy this year because now you get Billy O'Brien coming in as an Offensive Coordinator. Great success, has done well everywhere he's been offensively, he gets to come in and work with Mac. He's gonna have stability around him. I think the team is gonna go get another guy, uh, to be a receiver in that offense. Hopefully bring my guy Jakobi Meyers back, um and be a part of it. But I'm excited because..."

Sounds like he slipped a little and knows something we don't lol. Hopkins trade? I wonder what it'd cost to acquire Mike Evans.

Because basically what I'm seeing is Zappe came in against two mediocre teams, watched his defense pitch a shutout while he did the bare minimum

Emphasis on "doing the bare minimum and watching his defense pitch a shutout."

Funny you can say the same thing about Mac Jone's performances this past season except it was worse because you had far more sample size of mediocre to bad play!

Does Dmac actually have some inside info he is commenting on or is he just speculating like the rest of us?

Mac Jones said after the New England Patriots' Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills that he wanted to be coached harder. But during the second-year quarterback's tumultuous season, coaches reportedly were told to back off.

FOX Sports' Henry McKenna reports Patriots coaches "were instructed not to be too hard on Jones in an effort to protect him from being too critical of himself." A team source also told McKenna that "there was an issue in 2021 with Jones struggling after getting yelled at."

This literally feels like a hit piece.

Devin McCourty goes on tv today and passionately defends Mac Jones and just a few hours later, the "sources" are back talking about how Mac is really the problem, the coaches were fine.

This stinks something awful.

If Jones is already beating himself up to the point of hindering his ability to learn, some dipshit screamer like Joe Judge who has no value doesn't help matters. There is a time to yell and a time for encouragement and support.

Judge. Maybe Fat Matt since he won't be with the team next year regardless.

I kind of wish the team would suppress all these rumors about Mac.

Coming from Henry McKenna, I assume the source of this story is Joe Judge. McKenna wrote a lot of articles on Judge when he was doing both special teams and WRs. This seems like a Judge story considering he was the QB coach and he has been known to piss players off getting into their face. Edelman reportedly told him to piss off in 2019 and everyone read the Herald article.

I would take this report with a grain of salt until another writer confirms it. This could have just been the excuse Belichick used to keep Judge out of Jones’ face.

The optimistic case for Mac Jones is losing in the AFC Championship Game. He just doesn’t have the arm strength to compete at a Championship level & it’s obvious to any impartial observer.

The Pats need to move on from Mac ASAP. Bring back Jimmy & field a team that can compete for Championships.

How strong is Jimmy’s arm when he is on IR?

This is sarcasm? Bring back Jimmy? Not start Zappe? Who are these mystery impartial observers?
