Tom Brady says he's done "for good"

That's interesting. So at the very, very end he gave himself an out should something unexpected materialize. He decided to retire pending contingencies that were not to be.

Knowing it was prerecorded robs some of the poignancy. I liked the idea he woke up with an epiphany and ran with it.

Interesting! Glad he got to announce it on his terms this time.

I know it wasn't THE reason, but I'd bet my house that 1% of his decision to un-retire last offseason was to shove it up Schefter's a**.

Congrats Tom on a well earned retirement! In more ways than ever this last year seemed like it took a lot out of him. I imagine the idea of starting over again with a new team is just too much after that.

I will give Brady a lot of credit. I feared that he would be one of those QBs who just couldn't admit to himself that it was over and play while he was broken down. He was clearly on the decline last year. So I figured he would come back next year and be a shell of himself. Glad he decided not to because it would be hard to watch.

Thank you Tom for all the years and the championships. Others will come and be great, but none will ever be as great as you were.

Will be watching you on Fox next year. Please don't suck.

Tom Brady brought me so much incredible joy growing up as a football fan. He's literally the reason I even live in New Hampshire now (I was tired of watching fuzzy streams online and said **** it and moved to Boston). What a privilege to watch the GOAT throughout the years.

Thanks TB12!!

haha the Patriots retweeted their tweet from this day in 2022:

Can't we just be civil and kind human beings about this today?
Tom is a person, and he's a rare kind of person. I've been tough on him the last couple years because I just wanted to get to this day.
I want to ignore the 3 years of what felt like betrayal and quickly move to the moment where we welcome him back into Patriot Nation as the immortalized hero he is. Sure, he's not perfect, and he's sacrificed a lot. But, in another year or so most of the world will forget about Tampa Tom, and he'll re-engage with the NE community and he'll get his gold jacket as a Patriot. It truly is the end of an era now.

I think it's a sign he just wasn't as motivated to play as many here suggested he was.

IMO if he was more motivated, he'd be holding off on the announcement at least till free agency, thinking a team could always pull together a nice package for him.

If he was super-motivated, he could wait till the end of the pre-season, since it seems we always get at least one major injury in camp.

I think he gave himself a few days to think things over, and the answer he kept getting back was that he was done, and there was no need to string things out any longer, it was time to move on.

Derrick Carr suddenly not being permitted by the Raiders to seek a trade makes a whole lot more sense all of a sudden lol

He’s played in the NFL through 3 decades of his life. Each one - his 20s, 30s, and 40s, are Hall of Fame careers by himself. Looking forward to listening to him call games now.

As for the timing? It was time. This year was the first year I’ve ever seen in his career when he was visibly jittery in the pocket in the face of pressure. Like he was afraid to get hit. At that point, someone like him has nothing more to gain. Call it and eat a ****ing steak with mashed potatoes or something. Blow up the toilet afterward and smash fit younger women by the dozens. Kiss your son on the lips. Do what makes you happy. Truly a joy watching him play here and then moving on and winning another one.

Oh goody - another “Peyton’s better than Tommy” post starting on the Colts Forum in 3-2-1…….

I really don't believe him. Come March he is going to get offers and he will want to play again. It seems like SB time is really difficult for him as this is two times now in two years that he has retired right before the SB. It is almost like he just can't stand it that he is not playing in the game and decides to retire and then the game is played, winner is crowned, one week of hoopla and then on to next season. Once that lull happens and everyone has turned their attention to 2023, he will want to play again badly IMO.

Mike Greenberg: "The greatest career the NFL has ever seen" He just added: "he's the greatest football player that ever lived."

There's no way he makes this decision without meaning for it to be definitive after already unretiring once. Especially considering this time he could basically listen to any offers and sign with a team of his choosing, in contrast to last offseason in which the retirement announcement might have been a ploy to force the Bucs hand and try to hop on a better situation. This is done.

If he's done it once, he can do it again.
