SouthernPatriot, I'm also a big Alabama fan (I'm a Birmingham resident up the road from UA), and I think BOB's main problem (beyond the obvious fact that Alabama didn't win the national championship under his watch as OC) was that he suffered in comparison to some of Alabama's previous OC's. Since 2014, Alabama's Offensive Coordinators have been:
- 2014-2016: Lane Kiffin - A blowhard and self-absorbed showoff, but obviously a very innovative offensive mind who opened up the AL offense.
- 2017: Brian Daboll - The guy who turned Josh Allen into a star and then worked miracles with Daniel Jones and the Giants as HC.
- 2018: Mike Locklsley - Winner of Broyles Award for top college coaching assistant that year.
- 2019-2020: Steve Sarkisian - Another winner of the Broyles award and clearly an outstanding, innovative college OC.
I think BOB is at least an experienced OC (which is more than can be said for Matt Patricia) but he really isn't on the same level as an innovative offensive mind compared to guys like Kiffin, Daboll, Locklsley and Sarkisian, and IMHO he suffered in comparison in the mind of Alabama fans.
