BOB is the only OC on the Pats I can't recall being repeatedly frustrated with. Of course the Pats were stacked on O when he was here last time.

My recollection is BoB brought the fast-paced offense to the Pats that just started destroying teams, especially with the two TE set. I would love some of both of those back.

By DVOA, the Pats offense under BOB was really good, finishing 1st in 2009 and 2010 and 3rd in 2011. The team's troubles in those years was on defense, where they finished 14th, 23rd, and 30th.

The defense by DVOA has actually been pretty good the last few years, finishing 4th and 3rd.

To me, the troubling thing about Patricia's short tenure as virtual OC and OL coach was his arrogance: going with an inexperienced QB coach, installing a new system on his 2nd year QB, doghousing his best WR, and pissing off both tackles by swapping them. Those are just not things a first time (virtual) OC should ever have considered tampering with. Pure hubris.

And shame on BB for creating this mess with his continued cronyism and nepotism. How sad it was to watch him pander to his old-time crony Saban by not taking BOB last year -- with meanwhile McDaniel's ripping off his offensive staff. Hiring BOB this year was the best he could do with the cronyism constraint, but it is troubling nonetheless.

If BOB assured Saban he'd stay the duration of his contract, how do you fault the parties involved for having some integrity?

Not sure why I find myself always sticking up for Caley, which I'm not, but context matters. These are the TEs Caley had to work with since 2019:

LaCosse
Watson (39 yo)
Izzo
Keene
Asiasi
Henry (same career avg)
Smith (slightly lower career avg)

IOW he's had mostly trash to work with. Even HH and JS are not play makers, and HH has same production as before. Smith is who he is despite our desire to believe otherwise.

And? I've heard on this forum recently that Henry is one of the best TEs in the league and Smith is just "used incorrectly" or would be an absolute STUD.

He was so well thought of that Bill brought in Patricia and Judge to run the Offense in 2022.

Apparently, Bill's thoughts on that were that Caley would move on in '23 and wanted to avoid a 3rd OC in 3 years for Mac. As it turns out, Mac is ending w/ a 3rd OC anyway, which makes the decision to go w/ MP even more baffling.

In all honesty, I think it kinda was. BOB was their target all along and Caley didn’t really have a shot. So he was kinda the backup in case BOB would very surprisingly refused the job.

Right. I think it was something he brought from the college game. Wasn't that the Ducks' signature, the fast-paced offense? And then the Pats brought it to the pros?

2009 was a really funky year, but then they went 14-2 in 2010.

SouthernPatriot, I'm also a big Alabama fan (I'm a Birmingham resident up the road from UA), and I think BOB's main problem (beyond the obvious fact that Alabama didn't win the national championship under his watch as OC) was that he suffered in comparison to some of Alabama's previous OC's. Since 2014, Alabama's Offensive Coordinators have been:

1. 2014-2016: Lane Kiffin - A blowhard and self-absorbed showoff, but obviously a very innovative offensive mind who opened up the AL offense.
2. 2017: Brian Daboll - The guy who turned Josh Allen into a star and then worked miracles with Daniel Jones and the Giants as HC.
3. 2018: Mike Locklsley - Winner of Broyles Award for top college coaching assistant that year.
4. 2019-2020: Steve Sarkisian - Another winner of the Broyles award and clearly an outstanding, innovative college OC.

I think BOB is at least an experienced OC (which is more than can be said for Matt Patricia) but he really isn't on the same level as an innovative offensive mind compared to guys like Kiffin, Daboll, Locklsley and Sarkisian, and IMHO he suffered in comparison in the mind of Alabama fans.

Correct, from what I've read, BOB was brought in to run the Bama offense, not to innovate.

Finally that piece fell. Man, Kraft and Bill B are probably at the end of their time together. According to several Pats sites, this was a "Robert Kraft" hire and Bill B was "encouraged" to hire him. Even though Bill B apparently had real interest in others

Bob Kraft is on record wanting BOB to take over after BB leaves.

In 2011, BoB's year of being the OC, they drafted 0 WRs.

In 2010, they drafted Taylor Price.
In 2009 they drafted Brandon Tate and Jules. Jules was drafted as a football player not a WR.
In 2008, BoB was WR's coach and they drafted Slater.
In 2007 he was an OA and they drafted 0 WRs.

I think the folks that are rubbing their hands together in anticipation of BoB drafting the next Megatron are going to be sorely disappointed. We can hope, but they will likely draft a shut down corner in round 1, and get a really good slot in rounds 3-4.

Genuinely curious : why the charade of the interviews ? Like, why would a coach with the background of BOB need to interview with his résumé and familiarity ?

To ask him many other questions and hash out the details, and have a clear understanding of where both parties stand. They probably sat him down and asked him things along the lines of, what he wants in both the long term and short term etc etc. Pretty standard to interview someone whom you’re about to possibly through millions at.

I hope BOB gets' one of these Three TE's Michael Mayer - Dalton Kincaid or Darnell Washington.

Get Mayer AND Washington ! BOB is great at scheming for a 2 TE offense. Kincaid would be my 3rd choice.
