My point is that there is little reason to think that Caley is a top coach.

other than the fact that the Patriots are high on him, and that he's garnering interest from other orgs?

He interviewed for OC here. Apparently they think enough of him to interview for that role.

Right now they need more thus was not a fit.

That is not context. Context is playing crappy defenses all year which artificially inflated their ppg.

You are suggesting removing outliers and/or calculating a true statistical average based on the mean, median or mode.
Fair enough

Let's see what happens with the ass-istant coaches... If nobody is fired (my expectation) then I'll be in complete agreement here; if everybody's fired (my fervent hope) then the times are indeed a-changing...

if they don't get rid of cam achord, or at least move him out of that position, then i'll be more disappointed than any other coaching move in the past few seasons

I wish him well as a coach for the jets

He was so well thought of that Bill brought in Patricia and Judge to run the Offense in 2022.

Yes, Bill did him a solid by interviewing him for OC. That interview might help him.

They never worked on the field together, but Mac did help O’Brien get up to speed on the playbook as they were essentially ships passing one another - Mac leaving Alabama to go to the NFL and O’Brien leaving the NFL to go to Alabama.
It's sort of in the middle. They know each other, had many conversations, helped each other, but BOB never coached Mac in any games
This is what I was referring to. I didn’t know about the pre draft, so technically they did work together but not very long.

Great news
Competent playcaller compared to whatever that was last year
BOB is the only OC on the Pats I can't recall being repeatedly frustrated with. Of course the Pats were stacked on O when he was here last time.

As a Bama fan I can tell you that that our fans that were upset with him were because deep down he is a NFL OC.
Calling plays in college and the NFL is just different. BOB is a really good NFL OC, but not a good college OC.
Just 1 example, in college you rarely throw inside the 5 yard line, BOB called it all the time and we turned it over numerous times. He even did it with a red shirt freshman playing when Bryce was out.
Honestly he was also very predictable and lacked creative plays. His best game was our last game against in Sugar Bowl. We all were saying, where were these plays the last 2 years?
In his defense, we had a horrible DC that was giving up way too many points and this past year Bryce Young was injured.
Bama fans feel this really is the right move for both sides, BOB goes back where he was so successful and we hopefully can land a college OC.
SouthernPatriot, I'm also a big Alabama fan (I'm a Birmingham resident up the road from UA), and I think BOB's main problem (beyond the obvious fact that Alabama didn't win the national championship under his watch as OC) was that he suffered in comparison to some of Alabama's previous OC's. Since 2014, Alabama's Offensive Coordinators have been:
  1. 2014-2016: Lane Kiffin - A blowhard and self-absorbed showoff, but obviously a very innovative offensive mind who opened up the AL offense.
  2. 2017: Brian Daboll - The guy who turned Josh Allen into a star and then worked miracles with Daniel Jones and the Giants as HC.
  3. 2018: Mike Locklsley - Winner of Broyles Award for top college coaching assistant that year.
  4. 2019-2020: Steve Sarkisian - Another winner of the Broyles award and clearly an outstanding, innovative college OC.
I think BOB is at least an experienced OC (which is more than can be said for Matt Patricia) but he really isn't on the same level as an innovative offensive mind compared to guys like Kiffin, Daboll, Locklsley and Sarkisian, and IMHO he suffered in comparison in the mind of Alabama fans.

is that because Caley did such a good job as a TE coach?
Not sure why I find myself always sticking up for Caley, which I'm not, but context matters. These are the TEs Caley had to work with since 2019:

LaCosse
Watson (39 yo)
Izzo
Keene
Asiasi
Henry (same career avg)
Smith (slightly lower career avg)

IOW he's had mostly trash to work with. Even HH and JS are not play makers, and HH has same production as before. Smith is who he is despite our desire to believe otherwise.
