Mayo negotiations + OC interviews next week

Not open for further replies.
FWIW:

Mayo: Assistant HC
Patricia back upstairs to the same role he had in 2021
Judge: ST (coach?)
Achford: Assistant ST coach
Caley gone
Mayo to Assistant HC - this makes the most sense since it doesn't require them to interview other candidates, but in general "Assistant HCs" are lower on the totem pole than coordinators so it looks more like a demotion than a promotion on paper. However, I'm sure the paychecks will be pretty hefty if he's staying around for it and the title carries a lot more implication for him than it usually does for other Assistant HCs in regards to his future. Also allows Steve to keep doing the same thing he does today.

Patricia back upstairs - Yeah. Good. Only correct decision. Don't think he needed to be fired as it didn't seem like players hated him, he just wasn't good at the role he was in. Fine with him staying around as Bill's confidant (a la Ernie Adams).

Jude to ST - not sure about this one, the article seems to say he will be the ST Coordinator but if they do that, I believe it would screw with his Giants HC contract which still has 2 years left on it. Maybe he'd be in some kind of "Senior Special Teams Advisor" role similar to how Patricia was a "Senior Offensive Advisor" role or something last year. But yeah, otherwise get him on Special Teams because Achord couldn't have done much worse of a job.

Achord demotion - Pretty sure he will just be gone, his contract is up. Unless they want to keep him around in a lower role for some reason but I don't know about that.

Caley gone - Probably. We'll see if he gets an OC job. If not then he might stay unless McDaniels still wants to take him.

Normally I'd say Curran is just speculating, but there's a reasonable chance that he is getting sourced info from the Krafts.

I do pause a bit though since Bedard reported a couple days ago that O'Brien is "not gung-ho" on the job due to wanting to have autonomy over the staff under him - translating to "I don't want to have to deal with Matt and Joe." But pair that with Zolak's report today and it sounds like maybe that's not going to be a problem.

You are right for one year. There seems to be a lot of one year blip NFL teams that flatten out in Y2 and onward. Having watched this for awhile, I don't react to 1 year blips anymore. I wish Dabol all the best, clearly better than Judge.
Yes agree definitely! But...It's just something about dabol, he was well liked and respected in Buffalo. Alot of the younger fans won't remember him being here in the early years early 2ks.. the guy Cleary sets the tone, creates belief and confidence in his QB and his team.

(Judge was in over his head there. Hopefully he returns to special teams he's actually a great special teams coach!)

But this giants team they're definitely all in for thier coach!

Can we pump the brakes on this a bit? Good coach, to be sure. I'd like to see the guy get a ring or two before we anoint him. Your points are valid, but his resume is still incomplete. I think he's off to a great start, and his future is extremely bright.
He has a ring, just not as a head coach you forget he was here? He played a part in bradys early development.. not saying he is responsible for Brady being the GOAT. But the guys respected league wide.. so ya I get your point! I'm just recognizing, and putting emphasis on how important coaching is to a young player! How'd this season look for coaching for us?

[Begin lecture to GOAT NFL coach]

If he the DC, call him the DC and pay him as the DC. If you're trying to avoid interviewing other candidates... um, why are we trying to avoid that?

[aside to Ross] And what is the rule? Thou shalt interview 3 or more for coordinators and HCs?[/aside]

It's fine if he truly is not DC material. Sure. But if it's just that Bill thinks he can say nobody is coordinator material and isnt that convenient... STOP BEING DIFFERENT. Just jump through the damn hoops. "Hey can't blame him he starts out a month behind" no longer applies.

If it's because he's just not very good, okay, then we do still need a DC. You don't want this "assistant HC" character doing it. [/lecture]

I'm all about In Bill We Trust, but Bill needs to reset if you axe me. Like, what would happen if there were absolutely no gimmick, just hard work, the most talented coaching staff you can put together, and working to come together as a coaching team (obviously Under His Hoodie.)

These are the type of reports were you know it's almost a guarantee that BoB won't be the future Pats OC. Lol
I don't know about all that... I am immediately comforted by the names of former Pats coaches, especially former coaches from SB teams. I'll live w/what happens but truthfully, given the failure of the "coaching fraternity" theory -- i.e., the rule of cronyism and nepotism -- I'd just as soon give normal a chance, looking at guys from all over the league. I keep feeling like BB's got fortress mentality. I'd like to see him rule out hiring friends. It does not even guarantee that the friend will happily toe the line.. only that he will toe it.

edit - every name that's been here before isn't automatically a "friend." Any one of them might have "earned their shot." I really am comforted by the BoB rumors. It would just be cool to see him looking at people because they are great coaches

Respected and well liked by everyone except the head coach LOL. At east at one point they had a beef. Reported on radio that McDermott went ballistic at the lack of running plays. Daboll liked to throw it too much for McDermott's liking. I'm sure they made up at some point. McDermott was rumored to have taken over the playcalls.

Sure there is. You asked for film analysis of the changes in the offense and when directed on where to find it, you simply ignore it. Why should anyone be surprised by tactic #69 in Andy's Manual of Discourse Deflection Tactics.
Go ahead and link it.

I always find it interesting that people forget that when BB came to the Pats, he and Kraft agreed to certain ground rules in terms of the team and the day to day functions. The back staircase to the Owner's office was to be closed, cemented on both ends and never to be opened again. Talking to the media had to be Bill's thing when it came to Players and coaches alike.

So I find it fascinating that people could sit here and say that BB didn't have a hand in the announcement that came out last week in regards to the Offensive Staff. BB is always the first to take blame, contrary to certain people on this board's claims. BB runs interference for Players and Coaches alike. That's HIS job. Always has been. Far to many have taken it to be arrogance, but it's not. BB was treated like crap by the media in Cleveland and he never forgot that.

Several people stated that BB would make changes. He is. 2 of the pieces have fallen. One was slightly surprising in Mayo's extension as many thought he was gone. I hope that he get's the official title of DC along with AHC. I also hope that he's in on the hiring of the new coaches on the Offense so that it's a seamless transition when BB steps down in a year or two.

3 new coaches and a new OC. That's going to make the off-season interesting in and of itself.

It's probably posturing, I'm sure if they want him and he wants to come here he wants to under his conditions, whatever they are not to mention his pay. If I was a betting man, I'd say 80% chance he's the next OC.

Reports are coming out that Bill O'Brien is the leading candidate for the OC position. Of course the Patriots have to interview multiple candidates, but considering his familiarity with the original Patriots offense, BOB might end up being the best fit and the man in charge of the offense when 2023 starts.

Sometimes familiarity is a good thing. The Patriots offense was very good during the dynasty years. Why not go back to something that works instead of trying to invent a wheel that apparently nobody liked or could make work effectively in 2022?

Still on this kick.
You have made this accusation numerous times and failed to come up with a single possible motivation or a single example of the patriots shirking the Rooney rule.
Your right, I just heard Brian Flores is one of the first being interviewed.

As much as we hear that B'OB is the leading contender for OC, wonder about the Caley appeal. This team has always done well when our coaches ascend the coaching ladder. Caley has been with this team for 8 years and did his first two years as a "coaching assistant", but why is he so appealing to other teams?? He even went to John Carroll.
I like what seems to be the move on Mayo, Judge to ST's and the best available OC they can find. What is not known is who will be line coach and other areas that seemed to be deficient in the past couple of seasons..

Also they technically can't hire him until they satisfy the rooney rule. Which proves why it's such a dumb rule. They want o'brien but have to waste someone's time interviewing for a job they won't get

I get what the league is trying to do with it but all it does is promote sham interviews rather than just hiring who they want.

Caley was the TE coach, and the TEs were disappointing. No idea why anyone would want Caley.

The entire offense was terrible this season.. including the coaching staff.... so puzzling what the jets see in Caley!

this is why 2022 has been deemed one of BBs worst coaching seasons.. I was reading currans piece on rumors of Judge and Patricia allegedly having a gripe with Jones.. my thoughts were ok... 2 failed head coaches, were brought back in the organization... accepted roles they had no business in... regressed a promising QB and the entire offense..

So I'm trying to Find what leverage they have... if any!..
