Mayo negotiations + OC interviews next week

Reportedly, Bill O'Brien is not keen on the OC job. However, reading into the details, it's coming from Bedard (so might all be BS anyway) and the concern seems to stem from O'Brien wanting "clarity" on whether he will have "autonomy" over things like bringing in some of his own assistant coaches.

To me it just sounds like negotiations. He'll come along but he wants to bring some of his guys. In other words - he doesn't want to be saddled with Patricia and Judge.

I would welcome BOB with open arms and say PLEASE bring an OL coach and TE coach with you. Whoever you want that can run things right cuz my own two biggest disappointments are, the stupid penalties and bad play on the line, and the utter waste of resources from the ignored TE’s. We can talk about RB and WR coaches but I feel like you get the line fixed everything else would look a lot better.

And he might be right because McDaniels took a stacked team that just went to the playoffs, added devante Adams and made it worse...
However they beat us yes it was a bonehead play that sealed it but still beat us.
They also almost beat the Niners with Stidham.
And more then likely will be adding Brady and a draft pick or picks from trading Carr.

That franchise could be looking up.

Which doesn’t seem like a big hurdle. Between reassignments to front office/defense/STs and departures due to promotions/expiring contracts/mutual departures, they could have 5+ new offensive coaches without firing anybody.

It doesn’t seem like it, but I also wonder if they’d be concerned if they let BOB bring in “his guys” as a fleet and then he gets an HC job in two years and takes all of “his guys” with him, and you’re right back here again. I guess McDaniels will probably be fired by then.

They have run zone blocking schemes forever. As I said at the time, they may or may not use it more frequently this year, and the surely were considering it so they focussed nuts on it in camp. This is similar to things they do every year. If they feel they may want to increase the use of something they install it early and spend extra time on it.
By all means if you disagree with what I am saying actually happened, go to the game film and show me clips of all the things they did this year that they never did before.
Surely if they “changed the offense” there should be a plethora of examples from every game and even every drive to back you up.
Sorry Andy, I'll trust the people following the team and players like K. Bourne more than you.

"We’ve seen the offense look routinely disjointed as a new offensive coaching staff tries to install a new offense.
That’s clearly one issue right now. The install to this offense, in the wake of Josh McDaniels leaving, has Jones’ group often looking disorganized."
"Nonetheless, it appears that Judge and Patricia are currently installing a different version of the Patriots offense than the one that was in place during McDaniels’ 10-year tenure as OC. "

"The New England Patriots’ offense will look — or, at the very least, sound — different following the departure of longtime coordinator Josh McDaniels. Speaking with NESN.com on Thursday, wide receiver Kendrick Bourne said the Patriots’ revamped offensive coaching staff — which lost McDaniels and four other assistants this offseason — is running a “new system” this season."
"They changed the offense, then had to go back to what they were doing because it didn't work" - 3:20 mark of video

Ultimately, BB decided that McDaniels wasn't the guy to take over the reins of the Patriots.
Why? Because he didn't retire to give the team to JMD or because he hates Mac and wanted to ruin his career?

I do wonder how many of “his guys” he could even get. Most of them are employed elsewhere, some with better positions than he could offer and almost all of the rest with at least comparable titles (or seemingly retired). Tim Kelly is the top internal OC candidate in Tennessee. George Godsey is the TE coach in Baltimore. Danny Barrett never left his Texans RB coach position. John Perry (former WR coach, not John Parry the ref) went back to the college level.

Will Lawing (former Texans assistant OL coach and then TE coach) is the one guy I see that followed O’Brien to Alabama, so he’d be an obvious candidate for a job. O’Brien has three notable OL coach connections in Doug Marrone (could potentially be blocked by the Saints), Brian Ferentz (perhaps wanting to step back from play-calling at Iowa), and Mike Devlin (Ravens assistant OL coach), but only one of those (if any) would happen.

Perhaps I’m overthinking this and the “autonomy” is just to not have Patricia or Judge on the offense staff.

Feel free to go to the tape and show me what they did that was new to the playbook. Articles from August about which pieces of the scheme they were practicing doesn’t refute anything I have said.

Yeah I think it’s as simple as your last line. It’s being phrased as “I want to pick who my guys are” but really means “I want to be able to make sure my guys are NOT those specific guys that you had last year.” But he’s not going to say that outright.

Why would anyone assume that Belichick withholds information and knowledge. That’s bizarre. If Mayo is the hand picked successor, as seems clear, of course belichick is going to train him completely
I absolutely believe Mayo is the successor, he's the perfect person, he's his own man he does not try to replicate Bill. He is connected with the mix of players he's beloved and respected by the organization. What RK is doing is very smart having him in a role like McDermott has with Leslie Frazier DC, assistant coach. This has been the most eager I've been to see off season changes in while!

Not sure how legit this is. It's from bedard. But seems O'Brien isn't gung ho on coming here unless he can pick his own staff.

Now, I also doubt after last seasons disaster and the announcement of an OC search that bill wouldn't let an OC call the shots on that end

Most of the position coaches will either leave the team or need to be upgraded, especially QB and OL. It makes sense that a seasoned vet like BOB would negotiate the ability to bring in his guys. In any event having a named OC should help attract good people for the position coaches.

Kingsbury's situation is interesting. He can move to a low tax country and keep most of the $$ coming his way (23-27 @ $5.5M). The world is pretty cool when you've got a lifetime supply of real money. Just take a year to mess around and see what emerges, football or something else. All riding the back of NFL ownership's ego. Pretty cool. What on earth would cause him to want to be an O coordinator?
