Mayo negotiations + OC interviews next week

This is such a bizarre press release. It smacks of desperation. Clearly Kraft knows that the Patriots fans as a group are bitterly disappointed and pissed.
I just hope there is some meat on this bone they threw to us.
They must be pretty confident they will be able to reach an agreement with Mayo. If they don't this "announcement" will make them look even worse.

Interviewing "OC candidates"....this does not sound like BB talking. The PR side of the team must be worried that as other teams like the Jets announce they are looking for a new OC and /or teams announce interviews with big name OC candidates that the fans frustration will grow to epic proportions.

Clearly the team leaked info to Curran for his article and they realized that was not enough meat on the bone. So they throw this bone out there to the ravenous fans before there are large numbers giving up on the ship as they watch wild card weekend.

They must have someone in mind for the OC position, but can not release that information.
Not sure it is bizarre. Might already have Bob lined up and have to cover their "Rooney Rule" ***.

I will bet the new OC is someone that 99% of fans on this site have never heard of or it will be the current TE's coach.

They also need a QB coach....no mention made of replacing the current "QB coach"
My dark horse candidate for OC is Frank Reich. He was the QB coach for Peyton Manning, was the OC for the Eagles when they beat us in the SuperBowl. He would be the perfect OC to fix Mac after Patricia and Judge ruined him.

Big fan of Reich,
I like what I saw from the Jets O at times with Lafluer.
O’Brien eh anything is Better than Patricia.
Kingsbury would be nice to have some of that air Raid mixed in.
Wes Welker is another name I want to to throw into the the ring as well.
Could we just elevate Hoyer to QB coach?

I like Zac Robinson as well.
Any I’m sure there are a ton of coaches who deserve a shot I am not thinking of.
Not to sound uninformed but what minority offensive coaches should I be liking out for?
I can think of a ton of defensive coaches. But other then Staley I don’t see any who are thought to be in line for a coordinator promotion.

Someone please enlighten me.

I’m hoping it’s BOB, don’t want Mac having to learn a new system 3 years in a row, that’s how you ruin QBs.

He is interviewing for Carolina HC job.

What freakin' bizzaro world did we wake up in!?!?! The Krafts find John Henry's off-season PR playbook and run it? Win the back page off-season like the Jete? What the hell topsy turvy world is this??

Ok, so, seriously now, good for the Krafts. Good for us as fans. I wonder if this signifies a seismic shift in transparency or if it's a one off? Time will tell. I am very interested to see how this goes down from here.

@venecol : I couldn't have been more wrong on this one, eh?
I guess we are cut from a different cloth, my friend. I look at that as lip service. Placate the folks that spend the money. Make no mistake, I think they care, but they are not reactionary, and as long as the money keeps flowing, it's all good on Route 1. They aren't John Henry and his group. Henry will 100% react to the negative press. They aren't Jerry Jones either, who only cares that his bottom line is in the black and his wallet is full.

I think he'd be a great fit.

Just as important are the OCs he worked for and the systems he was immersed in and learned

Tom Moore (hybrid/EP)
Ken Whisenhut EP
Doug Petersen West Coast

As a QB he ran E/P, Run n Shoot and West Coast.

Absolutely a solid candidate.

But doesn't it all net out in the long term? And other than maybe Mark Davis, do NFL owners really have a problem with short term cash flow imbalances?
Good question. I suppose some may since not all teams approach the cap the same way. Pats had never spent like they did in '21 before. Kraft even said he hadn't signed so many checks since owning the Pats. Dishing out $160M+ in guarantees isn't chump change. They should've followed that by another $100M in '22 but didn't, thus ended up at #27 in cash spending in that span.

My understanding is that guaranteed contract money has to be placed in escrow, so that's a big hit in cash flow in year one. But no cash required for that contract is needed in subsequent years.

One important thing to consider - just because a OC comes with a background of a certain system or language, does not mean the entire offense will have to change to that. BB can easily require that the new OC (say Reich or Kliff) bring their concepts, ideas, schemes here, but translate the language closer to the existing one - for the sake of more continuity for ~20 guys, while only requiring the coach to adapt.
If they bring in an "outsider" OC, that's the only way I'd be for it. Otherwise, we're starting over AGAIN, with Mac & Co. struggling in a 3rd new system in 3 years.

The Mayo news sounds like Kraft literally demanded BB give him the DC title. Not sure what that means for Stevie B calling plays anymore, but I wonder if Mayo thinks enough of him to want to work with him - because that's probably part of the deal too.
Either way, I hope it works out. At least consistency on D bodes well, since the O is likely to have a lot of change (thank God!)

I feel like this isn’t the offseason to be taking a chance on a first time OC that has no experience calling plays. That would rule out guys like Welker and Robinson (who I’d like a lot better in a lateral move to a position coach role, which he’s apparently allowed to do).

These are the minority coaches I can find who got OC interviews last year. Pep Hamilton was promoted to OC for the Texans but is probably available again. The rest were not hired as OC. I think I got them all updated with their positions this past season, not their positions when they were interviewed a year ago.

Edgar Bennett, Raiders wide receivers coach
Pep Hamilton, Texans offensive coordinator
Scottie Montgomery, Colts running backs coach
Sanjay Lal, Seahawks passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach
Kevin Koger, Chargers tight ends coach
Brian Johnson, Eagles quarterbacks coach
Thomas Brown, Rams tight ends coach/assistant head coach
Cortez Hankton, LSU passing game coordinator
Chris Beatty, Chargers wide receivers coach
Robert Prince, Cowboys wide receivers coach

Correct for the guaranteed portion but the non-guaranteed salary is new cash in subsequent years. But if you do it again (more guarantees) in subsequent years like NO, Rams, Bucs have done, then the upfront cash flow spending continues. I'd be curious to see the list of cash spending by teams from 2020-2022.

If I'm Bill, I'm making Mayo the Official DC and Asst. Hd. Coach. As part of that, I'm having him participate in the interviews for a new OC. Someone that will work well with Mayo so that when Bill steps aside and Mayo takes over, they're won't be much of a transition.

I wonder if Sasrkisian would be willing to leave UT-A to be the OC..

Probably not unless Kraft is willing to pay $6-7m per year. He makes a little under $6m a year there

BTW, the fact the Pats are so public about moving on from Patricia as OC which is out of their character, I think is safe to say that at least the Krafts don’t agree with the assessment by some on this board last week that there a lot of OCs in the league who were worse than Patricia this season.

Editor’s note: Wow! That is one hell of a run on sentence even for me.

Wondering if there is a clause in new contract that Mayo becomes next HC after BB retires? Why else would his "extension" be discussed publicly ? wouldnt he just interview for open HC/DC positions and if none of those work out come back to NE?

Seems like an odd PR move to do a press release naming him DC only for him to leave a couple weeks later for a HC position.
