This brings up the larger issue of who controls the franchise. Now that the issues are real, obvious for all to see, and we haven’t had a playoff win in a handful of years, it’s likely the ownership exerts more control over what has been a nearly unprecedented amount of authority Belichick has had.

The first shot across the bow was after a string of disastrous drafts, the Krafts curtailed Bill picking dudes against the scouts’ recommendations. They understandably didn’t like spending millions on the scouting network only to have Bill supersede their recommendations. It became a failing policy.

The last two drafts were much better as a consequence.

It seems obvious to some of us the same curtailment of Bill’s authority will occur with the coaching staff. Hiring friends and family became damaging to the team.

Is this a hill Bill is prepared to die on? The team is not his. It’s Bob Kraft’s.

I’m thinking Belichick will retire from the Patriots at the end of the season because he won’t accept the interference from ownership.

He’ll look to explore other options, such as coaching another team.

I think we see a new head coach if we drop the next 3 games.
I could see one of the Eagles coordinators, Kellen Moore, Then make Mayo DC I could see Mayo as HC I could see Demeco Ryan’s.
You know who I think would be the best head coach and we could be the first to have dibs on his career.
I think Julian Edelman would be a excellent Coach.

Hard to figure out who OC candidates would be so its hard for me to guess if they would be improvement over what we have (essentially BB/Patricia/Judge combo). I guess you look to college OCs? Otherwise you're looking at offensive assistant coaches which I admittedly cannot even name one off the top of my head across the league (besides Pats).

Of course it would be nice to have a Lafleur / Shanahan type - but those guys arent a dime a dozen.

I agree with most that there's no way the Krafts allow the same offensive staff we currently have. They have to be embarrassed at how this has played out.

Then it comes down to will Bill agree to make moves, and if so then how will he fix it. As some have pointed out, aside from Bill O'Brien, who is an offensive mind that Bill can bring in? He typically doesn't go outside his own network. The Patriots are also not a hot spot anymore. If an OC has options why come here?

I think Bill will want to stay, even if that means moving Patricia and Judge from their current roles. He is settled in, makes more money than any other coach, and has his kids working with him. The question is how the hell does he fix the offence. We got massive issues in coaching, o-line, high end talent, and worst of all we don't know if our QB can be salvaged.

You’re definitely not alone. Heck, who would have expected Mick Lombardi to be an OC candidate from our team’s own staff?

In a way, it’s easier than ever to find an OC because teams can no longer block their position coaches from interviewing for OC jobs. It’s more difficult now though, in that a third of the league has the head coach calling offensive plays, allowing those teams to use the offensive coordinator title to “block” the offensive second-in-command that doesn’t call plays from taking a play-calling OC job elsewhere.

yes, if Kliff Kingsbury gets axed in Arizona, Belichick will bring him on staff because Arizona will still be paying Kingsbury....it's a large reason why Patricia and Judge are on Coach Bill's staff....if the price is right, or your a relative or friend of Bill, you're all set...

Bill to Kliffie after the game (as per Hard Knocks): "... I'll call you..."

Hmmm...

As much as I believe BB has completely mismanaged the team this year, I do not for a minute think he is motivated at this point in his career by money. He is already very wealthy man and doubt he would risk sabotaging his own team and his pursuit of the Shula record by scheming to save $ on coaches so he could bank the leftover cash.
I am also sure if Kraft thought he was doing that, he would be gone by now. That would truly be a fireable offense for cause.

Agreed that Bill is now more motivated by Shula's record than by money... However, old habits are sometimes hard to break; and one of the reasons why our coaching staff sucks so badly is because he would rather keep most of that particular budget for himself & his children than spend it on Outsiders with possibly Different ideas... And being the Megalomaniac that he is, Bill also enjoys having his children & his Slappies around to tell him how wonderful he is... and to regurgitate his Manifesto as opposed to actually coach their players...

Maybe a little off topic but I never hear Troy Brown's name being brought up as part of the receiving groups problem. (I have no clue whether he is or not). We had Chad O'Shea for so many years and it didn't seem to be an issue. Then I think Judge replaced him for one year and the numbers started to slide. And, of course, under Brown the last two years have been less than stellar. Is the coach hampering the development of the players or is the talent just substandard? Or both? (To be clear, will always love what Troy has done for the organization).

It’s a good example of how little we really know about who is responsible for success or at fault for failure. It’s bizarre how many people are totally convinced that one specific person is responsible for a player’s Pro Bowl season or another player’s lack of development or a good draft pick or a bad free agent signing. Opinions and educated guesses are fine, but I don’t understand why it’s ever presented as a statement of fact (the DropKickFlutie special).

People complained about Judge as the WR coach, and he got a HC job the following offseason. People complained about Mick Lombardi as the WR coach, and McDaniels specifically picked him (notably over both O’Shea and Caley) to be his OC in Las Vegas. DeGuglielmo was universally hated by fans, but he was apparently good enough that Flores, McDaniels (with the Colts prior to backing out), and Judge all later hired him.

On the other side of things this season, it’s remarkable how well things have gone at RB outside of injuries, with Stevenson playing at just short of a Pro Bowl level and both rookies looking like NFL players. Is Vinnie Sunseri already a top RB coach in his first year in the lead role? Was Ivan Fears holding Stevenson back last year? (To be clear, those are rhetorical questions.)

I’m going to say that the impact from coaching is never as good as it looks at its best, and rarely as bad as it looks at its worst.

Here’s hoping these next three games are disasters and there is no choice but to have a giant coaching upheaval
As much as I'd like to see a miracle 3-0 at the end of the season, realistically its more like 0-3.
This debacle of a season started with the loss of McDaniels and the hiring of two guys better suited to other jobs...
I think team ownership will step in and make some changes, whether BB is cool with that is THE question. He may leave if he can't "shop for the groceries".

This debacle of a season started

Patricia sucks as an OC but even then they would be 9-5 and in the #6 seed right now if refs had an ounce of competence.

I think they’ll bring in a “new” OC/QB coach (who has a good chance of being an old OC/QB coach), keeping Patricia and Judge on offense but with a different lead voice.

To be even more specific (and therefore likely more wrong), my guess is Judge is with the TEs next year after Caley leaves to be a WR coach elsewhere. Even more so than what happened with the Patriots, I think it was probably hard for five-year TE coach Caley to be passed over by McDaniels in favor of two-year WR coach Mick Lombardi. If he sees a WR coach as the next step, I’m not sure that will happen in NE with Troy Brown currently there.

If there is an OC search, the new expanded Rooney Rule will make things interesting in that they have to interview multiple external candidates (minorities specifically, but even just “multiple” and “external” are big changes). They can’t just interview one person and then hire him anymore. We’ve never really gotten any info from the Patriots about who is considered for these jobs but then not selected.

You are on target.

The rumor is growing pretty strong that BB has already reached out to BOB. Ian Rapaport tweeted about it this morning.

I am looking sorry hoping for a miracle 3-0 finish.

Patricia allows players to call their own plays and it's survival of the fittest . Mac plays lights out , knowing that his career is at stake . Meyers lights out knowing this is his last chance for a big contract .
McDermott knows this is his chance to become the RT of future for Pats. Some Bengal rubs brown the wrong way and he becomes the marauding giant .

A cornered mouse sometimes becomes the most angry animal as it's only option to survive is attack.

More of Rham, strong and Harris. Can we get screens to Jonnu in space and then use our OLine to go like battering rams before Jonnu paving the path . Use strange as the Fullback .

Christmas miracle incoming

Bill no longer gets to call his shot.

So you are saying he is quitting. The moment Kraft tells Belichick how to run football operations is the moment Belichick hangs them up. Nothing is worse for any franchise than the billionaire owner making football decisions.

Looks like Obrein coming on aim guessing as assistant head coach and will get the main job when Bill retires.
I don’t hate it but I really was really hoping for Payton or the Eagles OC or DC.

Sounds good.

Like, can we stop pretending Bill has leverage? "Oh you can't tell me what to do I quit!" Good, that means Kraft won't have to pay you.

The Bills have just clinched the AFC east for the 3rd straight year. Instead of getting closer to at least competing for the division, we continue to go the other direction. Let that sink in.

now, WHO is responsible for the coaching, coaching staff, and also the talent ( players). Time for some major changes if BB is going to stick around. I see a franchise with no vision and solidly going in reverse.
